First XC/trail bike

Hey guys
I have been bitten by the bike bug and wanna start riding alot more and do some easy XC races in the near future.
I have a max budget of around $2300 and just wanted to know what u guys thought would be the right bike for me.
I can really only ride on the weekends and i live in the forrest area.

For strictly racing, the Anthem or xtc.. Also consider the Giant Trance..

Yeah, I'm saving up for a Giant Xtc-1. They are an awesome bike, great value and great performance. Right now I ride a Kona Dawg, which is a lot of fun, but not really up to the xc racing. It's a bit to heavy and the suspension design is not the most efficient. Having said that, if your main aim is to have some fun on the trails, and do a bit of racing here and there, the Kona Dawg is still a good choice.

The XTC-1's are retailing at $2295, and the XTC-2's are $1595.
I would recommend the 1 because it has very good components. It's way cheaper to get the better model to start with than getting the 2 and upgrading everything.
