You might find some info in this Service Manual: http://manualer.happymtb.org/marzocchi/2006-888-rc2x.pdf

It sounds like its almost guaranteed your tuning issues are a result of one hell of a bottom out. Take them to get professionally looked at as I dare say, something is up.
yeah my 08 888rcv (i think) are screwed no oil leaks or anything, but i didnt bottom mine out or anything. i did a run of a track got to the bottom and they were fucked. i took them to life cycles said that the bushes and somthing else inside (cant remember what) were screwed so they sent them away because they were under warrenty and i got them back and the worked fine.
a few weeks later they had a huge amount of movement in them and i took them to my LBS and he said they were screwed again and the company that he said fixes them got bought out by another company so i got him to do a service on them and they felt better and now again they make a heaps bad noise and have movement.
so im still waiting for the companys to swap over to send them away.

Take them apart and check them out yourself as I know you can. Check the oil isn't above the volume reducers where it shouldn't be. If it's cycling through up there that could produce the inconsistencies you are getting.

Mine lost all their rebound damping after a heavy bottom out once as well. I took them apart and found an o-ring had moved from somewhere:confused: and covered up the intake ports on the cartridge so no oil could get in. So yeah just take it apart and you'll probably find something where it shouldn't be.
