Hey guys.

I had my first blood nose a couple of weeks ago. It was in the 8 hour at Stromlo... I thought it was a one off thing, but since then I have had it happen twice.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I don't suffer from hay fever but I am starting to thing it could be related some how?

Cheers.

I had a similar problem not only when riding but also just in general, including waking up in the middle of the night covered in blood. I went to see the local GP and he took a look up the snoz:eek: and said something about capillaries being to close to the surface, he prescribed some cream (don't remember what it was called but it was in a really small tube) which i used and i have not had one since.

Good luck:)

Yeah, that sounds like me... I have in the past woken up in the night to a drenched pillow or woken up just as the blood starts to flow out of the nose. I will go have a chat to my GP to see if I can get it sorted.

I get cron-dog (cronic(sp?)) blood noses but have only had it happen whilst rideing once. first race at stromlo a few years ago i believe.

but if anyone finds out the name of that cream, post it on here. and tell if it works

Iit's a bigger problem in winter with the dry air. I have used lanoline and it works great, or you can use a nasal moisture spray (called FESS I think, there's a nother called Nozoil). Basically it keeps the skin moist and stops it from cracking. The capillaries are close to the skin so any cracks and it comes pouring out pretty quick !! They have all worked for me, I treat both nostrils at night once before bed and usually don't require more than that.

Lanoline is usually in the maternity section of chemists/BigW etc., feel free to rub it on your nipples too :)

I used to know a girl who actually had to have the veins inside her nose cauterized to stop nosebleeds. For those with thin capilliaries inside their nose this can happen during short bursts of high blood pressure, such as when you are riding or, er, other vigorous activities... go see a doctor, you should get it assessed professionally.

i have the same problem, but it seems to happen only around hot weather.
if anyone does find a cure or a treatment, post it here.

Nose bleeds in adults are often caused by high blood pressure. I was getting them a few years ago in a previous job which was a tad stressful, and someone there told me of the old trick (wive's tale) of stopping it by leaning your head forward and putting a cold wet washer on the back of the neck as it tended to lower the blood pressure to the head. It worked, so kinda gave his solution some creedence.

Head to the Doc and get your BP checked.

As advised by Ralph on the Simpsons - "My doctor said it would stop if I could just keep my finger out of there"

Plus one for just going to the docs, but:

Do you use some sort of cortizone spray for hayfever (eg Rhinocort)? I did for a long time. Sorted the hayfever out, but it does weaken the membranes in your nose- I started getting blood noses all the time and couldn't work out why until the doc told me that about the Rhinocort. Stopped using it and the blood noses went away...

Nah, haven't used anything for hayfever because I am not really affected by it. Went out for a ride again yesterday and it happened again... not as much but it was still there so I will be seeing the Dr about it for sure.

Thanks for the input every one!
