sorry if it's not bike related but...

 Oh damn! You reckon the tray gets bucked off the chassis on landing?
Some pictures from mining sites are pretty hardcore, 'tis a rather dangerous environment to work in, that's for sure.

That thing is fucking huge too... I think those tyres are about 8-10 feet high... that would do some damage to any unlucky sole down below that is for sure!!
lucky it aint goin nowhere!
thats an 85t truck with the front wheels jammed well in.
bet that would scare the driver, minute one of them points down the wrong slope, your either a passenger or a skydiver from there on!

Looks like a fake?.. some kinda tweaked out thunderbirds model. Picture on the right has a very wierd looking shadow that realy looks like someone standing there, taking a photo.
10 points for the model making. Ps the rocks look suss too.
Is it just me or am I getting cynical in my old age.

Couldn't spot the shadow, but I too don't believe that man landed on the moon....... no hang on it was a truck wasn't it.......

Thanks for the pics dude!
That last one is weird.... How is that possible? There must be some stupid people allowed to control hundreds of tonnes of machinery.

03-06-2004, 07:59 PM
hahah that's crazy.
Um, I'm pretty sure the driver wasn't stupid enough to go do that on purpose... those trucks are next to impossible to drive, especially on the narrow gravel 'roads' they're expected to use.
Somthing like 25 people die in the australian mining/minerals industry each year apparently. It certainly is a dangerous occupation.

Crazy stuff.
My mate a geologist took a pic of an identical sized truck incorrectly loaded, that tipped backwards as it was going up the slope from the pit floor.
This sat the truck " on its backside ", with the cabin driver being stuck miles up in the air !
Basically if these trucks are not moving- mine engineers lose the plot. They MUST move to be useful to the mining operation. They NEVER sit idle unless it requires servicing.
To correct " that tipped truck " cost around $250- 300 000 in lost time & inconvenience as other trucks could not go around it. They didn't say if the truck needed repairs or not.

Yeah, I would support the validity of that image. My dad works in the coal mines driving those trucks, and I spent a lot of time around those sort of trucks as a kid. From memory they can carry up to 200 tonne of coal at a time, and cost somewhere around the $1m mark.
The pic wouldnt surprise me. As a kid have seen photos of one of these things backing over a landcruiser troop carrier without noticing. Driver didnt spot it until he had gone completely over the top and spotted the squashed 4WD coming out the front. Have also seen pics of one of these things "accidently" demolishing an entire warehouse because someone stuck it in reverse instead of forward.
From the size of the mine, it looks like it might be either over in PNG or somewhere in South America. The pit that thing is falling into is bigger than most pits that I have seen, and most of the pits that I have seen in australia usually have almost vertical walls.
Either way, I would be fairly certain the driver would have brown dacks after that one!!!
Cheers
Al

that second pic is easy. i will hassle dad to send me the photo he has of something similar. it was a Caterpillar D10 dozer which they chucked into reverse without looking and backed it over another landcruiser. this was in the mid '70s. dozer vs Cruiser - dozer 1, cruiser 0.
this sort of shit happens all the time, but the photos tend to get surpressed. generally dont want people to think it is that dangerous occupation - bad publicity.... also, when you are dealing with gear that big the accidents just get bigger.
I have heard another story about one of those trucks getting airborne at about 60k's an hour, but that is another topic.....
