A Tribe Called Quest = Excellent. I've got Anthology, Anthology - Bonus CD, Beats, Rhymes And Life, Midnight Marauders, People's Instinctive Travels and Paths of Rhythm, Revised Quest for the Seasoned Traveller, The Love Movement, The Love Movement - bonus CD, The Low End Theory.

And out of all that I'd have to say that 'the hop' is the greatest.

Pretty big on Hip-Hop and I like plenty of shit but I always go back to Wu. Absolutely love Wu. ODB being my fav' MC/rapper I bought Return to the 36 Chambers a few weeks back and it's some of the best shit I've heard.

Back to the OT, I don't mind Ice-Cube and I do like Westside Connection but all those movies were shit as. Should have stopped at Boys in da Hoooood.

I have these two mixtapes by DJ Konflikt that pretty much feature the best of Mos Def and another one for Common. They are getting heavy rotation on my ipod at the moment.

Dilated Peoples - 20/20 Vision also does it for me and so does Heiroglyphics - Third Eye Vision.

As far as Aussie Hip Hop goes... Pegz - Axis, Muph + Plutonic - Hunger Pains are my pic of the bunch.

Bit like trying to pick the best rock album.

Anyway, here's a few must have hip-hop albums.

PE- Fear of a Black Planet

Dangerdoom- Mouse and the Mask (You're a fool if you don't own this album)
Def vs Doom w DJ Phonetic- Mix Bag
Roots Manuva- Awfully Deep/Alternately Deep & Run Come Save Me
Cypress Hil- Black SUnday
Deltron- 3030

A Tribe Called Quest- Beats, Rymes and Life

Wu Tang Clan- Wu Tang Forever
Ol' Dirty Bastard- Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, and Nigga Please
Jay Z- The Blueprint (god I wanted to hate the guy, but fuck its a top album. Also dig the by-line to this album release. An album that was tightly kept under wraps throughout production, then announced a week prior to release, Sept. 11th 2001. Long story short, album released, planes crash, WTC collapses, America left reeling, only 16 000 albums sold in first 4 days of release, 3 days out from chart debut and The Blueprint was shaping up as hip-hop's biggest commercial flop, in last 72hrs it sells in excess of 430 000 copies to debut not only at number 1, but also as hip-hop's highest selling debut album.)
Bliss n Eso- Flying Colours
Urthboy- Distant Sense of Random Menace

Really hasn't hip-hop been a big dissapointment... in the 80s and 90s it had progressed from Grandmaster Flash to stuff like PE and then it just sucked.

After that it became repetitive with no new innovation and lots of stupid acting tough crap. It just became boring and hasn't progressed anywhere near fast enough to be valid. Its like phsychadelic pop, or surf music.. really terrific stuff just a stagnant form of artistic expression repeating the same cliches over and over.

The only advances have been away from the genre with things like Squarepusher, DJ Shadow, and Richard E James.... and that stuff relates more to the dub tradition in many ways than hip-hop.

I am probably wrong, but I would like to be shown some progession and validity. It really is a shame it just sort of pimped itself out to mediocrity no matter how much it puffs up its feathers.

I vote "Fear of Black Planet" as a peak... maybe Paul's Boutique.

too many to choose just one...

Jurassic 5 - Power in numbers, Quality control
Gang Starr - Moment of truth
Wu-tang Clan - Enter the Wu-tang (36 chambers) <---most people here seem to agree on this
Nas - Illmatic
Zion I - Mind over matter
Hilltop Hoods - Left foot, right foot, The Calling

Unfortunatly this is mostly american stuff, will check out some of the English/Aussie names in this thread.

Here's some progression:

Thanks for the suggestions... , but listening to them they are still using the same basic methods that were already in place by say the end of '92 or '93. Around that time it lost its aggressive edge as well.. PE is pretty full on stuff, NWA was intense and funky while the Beastie's were just damn funky.

I find this loss of intensity so depressing... its all these dreary vamps that don't change and all at around the same tempo too. Its like its not cool to go faster, louder or be more like what you are talking about.

The actual rap rhythms have improved a bit, but someone like Chuck D was so good because he wrote lyrics that had the rhythms of great speeches while now rappers do a lot of clever clever over the bar line stuff.. sometimes kind of cool, but often just imitations of each other rather than stylistically original.

I know I am a boring old fart, and a music that doesn't progress is pretty standard (heck blues is almost a completely static art form, but heck can still be terrific beyond belief)... it just was a shame with hip-hop that it got stuck in a rut.

Please keep any suggestions coming because I would love to see something jaw dropping and be proven wrong.

Stuff like "Paul's Boutique" or "It Takes a Nation....", at the time were just "where the heck did this come from???" and they still sound that way..

i'm kinda with Moggio on this one.

i've never really gotten into hip-hop but find some real soul in early groups and contemporaries like a tribe called quest, i'm also partial to nu-jazz/future soul with hip-hop influences but only on occasion, for me to actually like a style of music i have to see soul in it.

I'm a big fan of Aus hip-hop and I can't reccomend the Culture of King's albums enough. Some of Aussie's finest MC's/rap artist featured over a few albums. Highlight artist/groups being Terra Firma, Hyjak 'n' Torcha, Koolism, Delta, Ken Oath, Downsyde, Bias B, Delta (Ben Delts), Muph n Plutonic. Only downfall is the female MC's...I cannot f*cking stand Aussie chick MC's.

I used to have a copy of that Up In Smoke dvd but Hip hop live doesn't do it for me, except for the Herd.

Haven't heard the latest Streets album. Any good? Mike Skinner is a bit of a genius.

Early Snoop is the fuckin' bomb. And I really love the guitar sound on the Whitey Ford album (the debut one). House of Pain aren't too bad either.

As for Grime - I like a bit of dizzee & lady soverign but not too up on it. Also that pommie/sri lankan chick rapper - she is pretty ace (what i have heard).

Whitey Ford ain't hip hop, I have the album and quite like it though.

Hard to nail just one album, but I have to agree that Paul's Boutique provided a seminal mainstream, lateral platform for hip hop. It left a lasting legacy.

A few personal faves include:

Hijack: Horns of Jerico
Mantronix: Music Madness
Ice T: Power
PE: It takes a Nation of Millions...
Organized Konfusion: self titled (Releasing Hypnotical Gases is a track a decade before its time)
BDP KRS1: Criminal Minded
Eric B & Rakim: Paid in Full
The DOC: No one can do it better.
El-P: Fantastic Damage
Cannibal Ox: The Cold Vein

Honourable mention to Sage Francis, whom I have had the pleasure of sharing a room with at Sound Summit in Newcastle many years ago.
And also, every incarnation and off-spin of MF Doom who has been kicking it since the Gas Face era.

Ice T: Power
PE: It takes a Nation of Millions.../Fear of a Black Planet

About bloody time someone mention Ice-T's Power...THE Original Gangster.
Regardless of what anyone says, this album was the defining moment rappers stopped talking shit about them selves and started rapping about the issues of the day. Same can be said about PE. It was an honour to meet Chuck D and Ice-T on the same night at Festival Hall.
Following up was N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton, which im my humble opinion changed the way rap was from that point in time.

Someone posted in here about what happened to rap in the 90's? They started shooting each other, and ALL the good rising talent was killed off.

And does anyone know the #1 selling RAP album of ALL time? Vanilia Ice - To The Extreme
Maybe that should be at the top! Edit: Wiki says #3 in the US, can't find the original article that claims #1.

I first saw Ice-T back in 89, when he visited Australia for a couple of gigs.
Got to shake the man's hand and get an autographed trucker cap.
A year later, I swapped the cap for Stetsasonic's In Full Gear LP. Bad move.

As for rap souring in the 90s, I'd say that was the case from the latter half of that decade. The early nineties saw many offshoots from the golden age of hip hop develop, with distinct sounds and schools of thought consolidating throughout different parts of the world.

But you're right, the whole East vs West shifted the focus that is still fucking up hip hop in so many ways...
