Thanks Some Guy, I knew I had seen that information on the site somewhere just couldn't place it.
Weather forecast is looking interesting, seems we could be in for some decent rain on Friday, I have never ridden the You Yangs After heavy rain, I am assuming it dries up pretty quick.

Can someone (such as Jodie, Myles or Milo) please confirm it's a 9am start - I've just gone through the registration page where it says:
Date & Time: Saturday, 4 October 2008, 10:00 — 10:00
Location: You Yangs Stock Yards Car Park
Drysdale Rd ( map )
Little River, Vic
Australia
Just want to make sure we need to be there for 9 not 10.

Rego will be open @ 7am.
Sorry if it is difficult to find. A bit like the Yowie I guess?

Cash prizes for 99 1, 2, and 3. Yowies and Yowettes get same prize money. Prizes for the 66 and 33. Register now to get your no. plate printed. We are trying to avoid day regos for obvious reasons. Yes, the Rego Yowie gets grumpy occasionally...

Yeah it's like a sponge out there. Should be really nice and tacky.
You had better pray for it to be tacky. The Yowie is getting HUNGRY.
Just a quick shout that the Yowie website is down, so if your trying to enter online you better get out early and enter in the morning.
There has been a bit of rain out there this arvo so it should be a super fast trail.
Hey, well done to all of you that competed today. Hope you had a great time. Next year is already booked in. Let us know what your thoughts were.

Rode the 33 kms race today - really enjoyed it!! The new section of track was a bit rocky - like the dirt hadn't properly settled. Other then that the track was great! Really loved the technical downhill sections.
Due to a breakdown on our server, we can't post results. So this is the best I can do for now. The rest of the results will be up when Me and the kids get back from pulling down the course. Congratulations to all place getters and finishers of the Yowie.

the track was great, best I have raced at so far, extremely diverse and having the three down hill sections trav decent as well of bolder track and the link track was a good idea and having all the tech stuff early in the race lap was also a good idea.
is that the first time Trav's decent has been used in a race?
Also Did anyone hear how that girl ended up. was it a collar bone? can someone send her her some best wishes please.
the new section that trav made will be great once it beds in, I wasn't able to ride it all during the race but it's a great addition to the youies.
and how f--k'n fast is Mr Spinks. that guy flies. wow.
what the next race at the Youies? I love that place.

I spoke to AJ today and he says Mel's okay, but it's a rather bad break (collarbone). Nothing they can really do to help it heal any better, just has to be given time. Give her about 10 weeks or so and I'm sure she'll be back on the bike.

It was used in a state series round, for the higher classes. Sport and junior classes bypassed it for a shorter lap.

Man it was tuff, maybe its my lack of training, but that was hard I pulled the pin on the 99 and only did two laps, maybe I'm just soft but i wasn't having a good day. However it does make a good lead up to the Epic Triangle. I must say I didn't like that new rock bit, I don't like parts you can't ride and a few people I spoke to did ride it either (too hard) but maybe its just not finished. Other wise friggin sweet, and the massage after was painfull but damn good idea.
That sould be a note to other organises I know several other large/long races do this but there were so many of them doing it it ment small waiting times. Good on GMBC.

will be interested to see the results as i am hoping quite a few pulled the pin on the 99km otherwise i really am more shiet than i thought i was!!!!
had my first experiance of coming in with the event in pull down mode. was a little soul destroying as didnt think i was going that poorly and was telling myself after i had already covered the 99kms that there was only 12kms to go until i got a massage (not too be!). anyway quality course that definitely tested you out. managed to ride almost a lap and half without seeing another competitor on the course (not sure if that is usual in these distance type events however at the time was a little unsettling as i was not sure what was going on).
was the girl you referring to the one who fell off after going over the ramp? if not hope she was ok as well as she had a nasty winding from that stack.

Anyone know what the times of the winners in the 33 were? I was about 1:50/55, would like an idea on just how far back I was. I say about as I accidentally reset my watch just before the big hill at the end of the lap.

Murray and AJ were doing around 1:31s, I came in off the 33 at 1:44 somewhere around 6th-8th having been stuck behind the 99/66s for most of the race - I'm guessing, based on the start and how quick Brenton/Simon usually are compared to me, it wouldn't have been much slower than 1:35.

Cool,
I'm pretty happy with that. I was paranoid about burning out so I probably took it a bit to easy in a few spots. Having said that, I was still pretty stuffed at the end. It was my first race and I think I've quickly caught the bug, I'm already looking up other evens to do.:)

Here are some prelimary results from the Yowie. The GMBC website is still down, so please pass on to your buddies.
Also - after cleaning up the track today there was minimal rubbish (ie. 5 gu wrappers) so a big thank-you to everyone for respecting the You Yangs and leaving the course immaculate condition.
Yowie '09 is already booked for the first Sat in October. Expect the unexpected!!!
Well done to the Race organisers, GMBC's new committee has certainly taken the club to a new level. Lets hope they keep the races coming next year.
The only grumble I heard all day was that maybe the new end of "Trav's Track" needed some finishing touches. The mix of challenging trail and easy stuff was spot on, something for everybody.
How good was it to have the girls their to massage the weary riders? Awesome, I wish we could have them at all races.
And then their was the BBQ....what else could a rider need?
Well done GMBC.

1:31 - by geez thats fast! My 33kms took just over 2 hours and I was stuffed! Of course I am guessing Mr Spinks is paid to ride fast. I am sure if he was faced with a Business Analyst issue at work he wouldn't be able to solve it as well as I can ;-)

To GMBC,
Great event and well organized ,had to go home straight after my 66km to get some browny pionts with the wife and kids, would have loved to hang around for a BBQ.Will be back next year 99km?
The track was great, but thank god for the long up hill fire trail as it was the only time i could make up some of the lost time coming down over those rocks.Being a roady really stands out when some of the girls (no-offence)tell you to move over coming down those bloody rocks.
Hope the skill improves for next year.
Thanks to all the organizers.

1:44 still a really good time you should be happy with that, as a B grade roady thought i`d get around the same lap time but only managed around 1:57 & 2:05 for my second lap, really struggled coming down those rocks and any of the faster down hill sections .Need to get the skill up to be anywhere near 1:45 lap well done.

Well done to everyone that attempted it I say, I was there taking some happy snaps and the sections I walked over the day were pretty tough, Trav's, Cressy, Boulder and one other section, didnt hear anyone complaing as they rode past me as I do at some at races so sounds like everyone got their moneys worth. Anyone interested at photos check out http://www.xtreme-shots.com.au although didnt get many shots over the day, was told of the injured rider came across 2 others on the way up to her and then she was gone by the time I reached the top so probably dont have any 33k riders unless you were in the top 20

Paid to ride fast? Heh. Mr Spink has a job, as do most of the elite guys. Or school/uni, and sometimes both.

Firstly, fantastic course. Nice and technical at the start with nice flowing track through kurrajong. A great effort from GMBC.
Just wondering..... what distance did other people measure for a loop. Good chance to calibrate my computer. I got about 36.5km. Mind you the start line was maybe a km or two from the finish line.

had hoped to ride this but been out with stuffed up chest/lungs etc last fortnight. Out of interest, can someone describe where the 33k loop actually went? Or is there a map which will turn up here or on the Yowie site?

From the stockyards carpark, turn right up the fireroad. Left at the top down boulder track. At the bottom of boulder turn right onto the flat singletrack that runs around. Up the steep rutted climb (lactic acid?) left halfway up that onto link track. At the end of link, turn right and continue climbing. At top left onto the fireroad and continue up to the top of the DH track. Down trav's descent, right at the bottom onto a new rocky track. This spills you onto the fireroad which you follow to the bottom of Cressy Climb. Up cressy, left at the top then down junction track. Follow junction all the way down to Kurrajong, through the jumps and over the boardwalk. Follow some tracks I don't know to Sandy Creek carpark, then around to the ranger's station. Great Circle drive up to to the downhill shuttle road, which you turn right onto and follow to where track 5 veers off (after you pass the bottom of cressy). Follow track 5 back to the start/finish. Rinse and repeat three times for a 99k race.
Didn't have my GPS on sorry, someone else might be able to give you the map from theirs though.

Thanks Some_Guy, next time I'm out there I'll try to put some of them together, I've only ever ridden up the firetrail or Cressy so interested in playing on some of these others.
Didn't have my GPS on sorry, someone else might be able to give you the map from theirs though.
I've got my GPS data if anyone is interested, just drop a message.

I will put a map up on the Yowie site pretty soon. So you can practice/duplicate it. I was pretty close to 33 in the end. I don't run a GPS or a computer so most of it was in my head. Makes me laugh. Although Ranger Mark provided a map of a similar course during the winter months...
Thanks for all of the positive comments. Looking forward to improving things next year. Some of the photos were great. Looks like you all had a good time. The weather was perfect. The trails were tacky and you could ride nearly all of the tracks at the Youees in one day, what more could you ask for? When Milo and I were pulling down the course we found five gel/bar wrappers over the entire distance. Considering the difficulty of the course that was well done. Next race, aim for zero. Someone left behind an entire bar, so we ate that. Hey, there has got to be some benefits. Overall, it was just great to see you all again with smiles on your faces and out our way.
Did anyone manage to ride the bottom section of Trav's Track?
