I am considering deleting the granny gear on my Trance.
It looks as though the big ring will foul the frame when moved onto the middle spider and the middle ring will not fit the granny spider.!!!
I rarely use granny and 1 less gear on the front will really not hurt (hopefully).
I have searched other threads and although they raise some helpful info , what i really want to know is how you move your big ring inboard , without getting clearance issues.
I initially got the idea from Rob Evas maverick . So....if you are out there Rob, please do tell what you are running, and how you went about it.

Just leave the rings in their current position. You could grind off the small rings spider on the cranks.
Another option is to get a double crank. I know that there are road cranks which are typically doubles. The problem is that they are likely to not fit the MTB chainrings.
My friend ended up changing his cranks to a double. Just do a bit of research to find some specific MTB double cranks.
That or just leave it as is. A small granny is not all that much weight.
ps there should not be that much problem with chainlines if you just leave the rings in their current orientation. The chain might catch the derailler a little but I very rarely change down into my granny.

Thanks for the reply. I probably should have added, that i want to move the rings in so that i get a much straighter chainline.
ATM big ring can only be utilised effectively when in the lower half of the cassette and middle only in the top half of the cassette.
Basically,I want t o be able to use the big on the majority of the cassette, and use middle to climb, therefore, the top half of the cassette.
??????
Hope that doesnt sound too confusing !!

Depending on what cranks you are running, you can change the BB to a narrower item. Square taper go down to about 103mm where standard is 113mm. If you are running external cups then shift your ring inside an put a set of e-type spacers in between the cups and BB shell.
Anything can be done if you want it bad enough.

Yep, if you have an external BB, you can move the spacers to the non-drive side. I've done it on my Cannondale Prophet, which does not have a 50 mm chain line.
