Hi
I live near woolgoolga and there are plenty of forest trails we just ride out to and have an absolute ball. Some semi rainforest to dry dusty fire roads with some gnarly downhill sections. And all just west od pacific highway.
I find it hard to imagine having to transport your bike somewhere to ride on the tracks. Suppose someone has to live here though.
Dont know if that is close enough to Ballina.
If you ever get down here Ill show you where we go.

Hey mate,
I live in Lismore and there are quite a few riders from here who head out pretty frequently. Closest to to is Uralba (you could ride from Ballina). It's not huge, but great fun. Others I know of are further away - Bungabee (between Lismore and Kyogle) and Goonengerry (near Federal). There are a few decent bits up near Minyon Falls too - mainly firetrails, but still fun. There is a race up there soon: http://tr.nelson.co.nz/freedommarathon.htm
Chat to your local bike shops (Sunrise in Ballina, and the one in Byron near Woolies).

Yeah - there are some fun bits there (and some seriously scary bits that you'd want a monster full-suss to take).
Did you ride the track that came out at the waterfall? An amazing view. It does get a bit overgrown though. The guys in Byron Bay bikeshop warned me that the track destroys derailers (Sheldon Brown spelling). :)
A group of us are riding up at Rummery Park (near Minyon Falls) on Monday morning (7am!). The aim is to go over the 40k track for the upcoming Freedom Ride race. It's mainly firetrail, but there are some fun fast bits and fairly crazy sections.

Ah nice one
Would love to check it out but am busy mon morn. Are there any single tracks up there? Where do you recommend for single tracks? I am hopefully going to check out the trails around minion in the next few weeks, is the race loop marked out?
Thanks for the info on goonagary Chris, ya that waterfall was nice, had to stop for a while!:)

ironic that you should mention the deraillieur destroying thing, i went for a ride up there about a month ago and just got to where those real gnarly roll in's are and a pin fell out of mine, managed to make it back to the car but painful to not have a good go at it,

Minyon/Rummery doesn't really have any single track. Mainly firetrails. There are some particularly tricky trails - very steep, twisty bits. But it's more of a ride for nice long endurance kinda work. Some beautiful scenery, and some great long downhill parts (including one 8-10km downhill firetrail section near Rocky Creek Dam).
The race won't be marked out until race day I am guessing. There are firetrails everywhere around there - good fun.
Map of the race is here:

For single tracks, Uralba is probably the best (and very close to you). Search for Forest Rd, Uralba, NSW on google maps. Drive to the end of Forest Rd and there's a small parking area. Ride up the firetrail (about 1km or so?) and you'll get to some single tracks that head off on either side of the trail. They are great fun, and there's some new bits been done recently that I haven't checked out yet. It's pretty short, but they are loops so you can go over and over. :) Chat to your LBS about it - sometimes some of them ride them. Darryl from Harris cycles in Lismore goes out there sometimes too.
Other good tracks are at Bungabee, but that's inland between Lismore and Kyogle, so quite a distance from you.

Chris
