Well ive decided i need some new forks and im having a tough choice making up my mind. I ride a carbon hardtail with Fox F80 RL's, which are getting on abit.
There's not much different in the price between them, i'd just like to find out what other people thoughts are before i commit. So many thanks and sorry if this has already been raised.
Cheers

Depends how heavy you are. Since you have fox then anything else won't be as stiff.
You could always upgrade the internals to atleast 08. The advantages are that there is a stack more compression damping (much less dive under brakes and more efficient under power).
should cost around $400-$450. any LBS shoould be able to help you out

I have gone from a SID Race '07 to Fox RLC80. I find the Fox much less fiddly to adjust and more robust. I also think the rebound is superior. Having said that, the SID has been completely redesigned for '08 and feedback is that it is altogether different from the forks of old.

I'd consider the new SID much more than the old one, but there's not much to choose between them now - weights and adjustability are probably about it, then looks and brand preference...

Do you want a remote lockout? If so I'd suggest the SID...yes for 2009 Fox RLC forks do have a remote option, but it negates much of the tunability of the fork. Of course the fact that the SID is lighter is also a bonus.

If you only want to upgrade to RLC from what you currently have do as Australia says no suggests and go the cartridge option. contact dirt works direct or through your lbs and they may be able to do a good deal for you as they are getting out of the fox stuff. Cheaper option of getting what you want

If weight is important (and I guess it is as you are looking for an 80mm fork to go on a carbon HT), you might consider the Manitou R7.
2009 SID World Cup - 1460 grams (claimed - SRAM website)
2009 Fox F80 RLC - 1620g (claimed - Fox Shox website)
2009 Manitou R7 MRD Absolute - 1271g (claimed wieght for the 100mm version - Answer Manitou website)
Plus if you buy them from a certain NZ online store, you would have a fair bit of cash over the RRP for the Fox or RS forks.
Having said that I have not tried Manitou forks (save from a Manitou III back in 1994 or so).
Just an idea... :)

If it were me, based on my current experience with various models and that I'm currently using R7s and Fox's on different bikes, I would absolutely take the SIDs. But at the same time I'd also take R7s over SIDs.
The SIDs require far less maintenance than the Fox forks in my experience. The Fox is stiffer, servicing and down time is far greater.
I have two Fox bikes and a SID Team, the SID isas good as the Fox forks and rates just ahead.

Hi.
I've tested some of the XC forks and well my Ranking will be something like This:
1st Magura Durin
2nd Manitou R7 MRD Absolute
3rd R. S. Sid '09
4th R. S. Reba W.C.
5th Fox F80/F100 '09
6th an 7th Pace RC 39 / Pace RC 36
9th R. S. Sid (Old)
10th Suntour Axon
Well, I'd recomend you the Manitou, it works soooo sweet, I've enjoyed so much with his working. If I don't save enough moeny before the begining of the season to buy a Magura Durin the Manitou will be my next fork. About the Sid thank's god it works millions times better than the old Sid, well I've to admit this for is the son of a Reba and a old Sid an it's more similar to a Reba than to a Sid, but it works pretty fine.
So I'd like More the Sid than the Fox, anyways both haves a wonderful working.

From what I have seen/read, the '09 Reba is certainly worth a look.
Supposedly a completely different animal to the previous models in terms of stiffness and ride characteristics.

Looks like there are a few candidates to consider.
Here are some of the choices:
Rebuild of your current fork: $400ish?
2009 SID World Cup
Weight: 1460 grams (claimed)
Cost: $1100 (best price I can find online, RRP would be more)
2009 Fox F80 RLC
Weight: 1620g (claimed)
Cost: $900
2009 Manitou R7 MRD Absolute
Weight: 1271g (claimed)
Cost: $680
2009 Reba Team
Weight: 1625g (claimed)
Cost: $850
Good luck with deciding on your new fork.
Hope you enjoy it.

Well... if it was up to to me (and luckily it is not :)), I would get the 2009 Manitou R7 MRD Absolute. It is lighter and cheaper than the other options. You can get a 80mm or 100mm set from CRC for AU$680 plus postage (as long as the Aussie dollar holds up...).
I came within a bee's d__k of getting some R7 forks for my bike, but got an offer that I couldn't refuse on a set of 08 Rebas... :)

In eBay you can find cheaper things.
Like we say in Spain the Manitou haves the three b's: bueno (good), bonito (beautiful) and barato (cheap), so i think it's the best option.

Are these AU retail prices? I thought the R7 was up around $1400 which was why I'd never really looked at it.
My current hardtail is really front-heavy, and I've been looking to find out what I can do to resolve that. At $680, that's looking much more viable.
Remember with the SID there's also the Race and Team, if you want to save a few dollars.
Makes me wonder what lower model R7s would come out at.
Edit: There is the obvious downside that the MRD is only available in candy red. Can't I have an R7 in SID Blue, just for laughs? :)

No. You can get the R7 MRD (http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/MNFKFN87M)from Torpedo7 for AY$800 plus postage (AU$9, I think).
Or you can get it from CRC (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=21343)for $680 or so, depending on the exchange rate, plus postage (which might be up to AU$40).
And, as Ryderman said, there is always eBay...

Around AU$490 from Torpedo7.
They have the undecoat/primer grey Elite Absolute (http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/MNFKFC8EL) in 80 or 100mm.
Or the black or white Elite Absolute (http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/MNFKFN8R7) in 80mm.
But they are a bit heavier, around 1500g or so (claimed weight).
And about AU$100 less from CRC (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=21341). But you will pay more in postage.
Edit: There is the obvious downside that the MRD is only available in candy red. Can't I have an R7 in SID Blue, just for laughs? :)
I agree the candy red is a bit bright. I usually prefer my bike parts to be black or white...
But atleast the candy red looks better than the undercoat grey (IMO).
If you want a blue Manitou (hey, I am a poet and didn't know it)... :o ...the 130mm Minute comes in baby blue.

Surely you could mount it in board of your brakes or shifters?

I thought so too, but i have riser bars that are 600mm wide and there is no room between the shifters and the taper of the rise

Would like to see a pic of that setup as I have 580mm wide bars with SRAM shifters and Formula levers but still have room for my Pop-loc and my Polar.

I'm not agree at all about colors in the R7, I've seen on ebay the R7 MRD in white and black I've also seen this fork in carbon finishing but was expensiver than the rest of Manitou R7.
Carbon version:

Allegedly, the matchmaker will also work with Hayes Strokers (same bolt pattern and all that). But check it out first...

I have a similar decision to make for my Yeti ASR. The R7 MRD Absolute (Torpedo or CRC), Durin (I like the sound of), F100 or SID Team. My Yeti is white, so Red would go OK, I guess...
Main concern I'd have over the Manitou and the Durin was one of serviceability in Australia. Any comments on that?
