Hey guys.

I ride a steel freeride/dh hardtail, naturally very hard, the rear wheel especially gets a beating.

At the moment I've got a Mavic EX721 on the back and it's not lasting as long as I'd like. I've put a big flat spot in it every time I've taken it up to the hills (twice so far).

I don't really know much about rims other than Mavic, so does anyone know if any other brands that make a highly flat spot resistant rim for those of us who love to thrash hardtails?

Cheers.

Try to find a NOS Araya Super-hard rim, they're great, I'd stock up on them if I could.

There is nothing that is flat spot resistant though, They are just more resistant than others, It does come down to how well they are built & If you really enjoy landing on square edges with no tyre pressure..... For example.

I own a pair of Atomlab Pimps, they seem to be going strong and have no flat spots or no warp from any heavy hits. They are second hand and previous owner had them for a while, as have I, and no sign of damage yet. *touch wood*

Resistant is not the same as immune. I know I'll never get an invincible rim! We can only dream. ;)

Most of my trouble is coming from hitting little water channels that have been carved out of the tracks at high speed, I try to bunny hop them but I can't always do that.

Thanks for the suggestions though, hopefully none of these are too much heavier, my bike is already a fat arse at 18.5kg.

or.... try and get your hands on the older version of the 729 the 321. its is heavy and i haven't managed to flat spot it yet with low pressures on a hardtail going down DH trails made of just rocks!:D

Really.. I always thought the 321 was like a lightweight rim below the 721, but obviously i was wrong. Good to know.

The naming goes like this: D521 is now EX721, D321 is now EX729. They are identical except for colours, stickers and name.

I have an EX729 on the front. Believe it or not they're actually much more susceptible to flatting and cracking than EX721s, because they don't have the big V brake walls I suppose, but laterally they are stronger. I chose one for the front because lateral strength is quite important for landing those sketchy drops from high up, many a rim has been taco'd sending the rider flying over the bars and down the hill.

The EX 721 is very strong rim for it's low weight. But if you don't keep enough pressure in your tires you will ding the rim. Though when riding a hardtail DH you will destroy rims, Mag 30 and atomlab trailpimp are some than stand out as heavy/strong.

The D321 is exactly the same as the EX729. They just changed the naming system a few years ago.

it goes something like this now:
two letters = XC(uh..xc), EX (extreme), and maybe an all mountain one
first number = 3-low-end, 7 high end, 8 highend tubeless
last two numbers = inner rim width in mm

so EX 729 is an extreme! use rim, high end with a 29mm inner rim width.

Intense Mag 30's!!!!

Intense/Ringle Mag30=Sun DoubleTrack=MTX3* (the largest one)...

Definatly up there with the more abuser-friendly rims. Ultimatley, your wheel is only as strong as the builder.
