Mate, we are going to need a little bit more info before we can help you.
What kind of riding do you do?
Height Weight?
New or Used?
Budget?
etc etc.
Post up a bit more info and then we can offer suggestions for you.

I find bike shops to be pretty good.

mate, it depends on what your going to use it for:
DH: I would go for something like a Norco A-line, or Norco Atomik
FR: Probs if you want a dual, something like a comencal 5.5, though they're hard to get, but something along its specs. but you can get any hardtail from norco like a sassy, or maik, rampage, they have sweet specs
4X: pretty much any hard tail which looks alright and has around 160-170mm forks
BMX: I am not too knowledgeable for bmx, but any kind of decent one, maybe a norco of a kind, but if your racing this, probably not though if you are, try and get a light frame and add pieces on.
hope that helps, though if you have alot of money and you are doing DH,get an intense m6 or m3, they are mad as bikes..

the 5.5 is an all-mountain bike, it does not look like it could handle freeride.... the Furious is a freeride specific bike made by commencal!!!!
look (http://www.commencal.com/news/index_en.htm)
there is also a 5.5 in my local bike shop mate, just because you cant find them doesn't mean they are hard to get... let alone do some research on it!
here (http://www.commencal.com/news/index_en.htm)
also 4x bikes generally have 4 inches of travel with 4 bikes in a race, hence "4x" and 4inches equals 100mm!! your saying that a 4X bike will have more travel than your supposed freeride bike:confused: lol you should search a bit more before posting

Seems like you're a bit biased towards Norco, but yeah, depends on what type of riding you do, Norco, Giant and Specialized all offer decent rides for many disciplines and a LBS around you should sell one at least one of those brands.

What a factual run down of what bike to get for each riding dicipline!
So I want to start 4X on my Giant Rincon. Its a hardtail and it looks alright...can I whack on some 160-170mm forks?

Powley; Isnt 4X named as such because it involves 4 riders?
Is it school holidays??
Even some basic info would help...

yes, its probably a coincidence that the vast majority of bikes ridden in 4X have 4inches of travel, forks, sometimes rear as well. and have specific geometry to made for 4inche travel forks.
bwt im not being sarcastic

true, but i think that is more of a coincidence, i think it is more geared towards the 4 riders menainng and it it a cross (X) between MTB and BMX
