I've never been a fan of marathons, so whenever one comes around I'll usually just enter the shortest version, and spend the rest of the day socializing.
At this stage I plan to rock up and do the Pioneer, but I've got a lot of people digging at me for being a pansy and not doing the 100. We'll see.

My mate casually sent me a link for the Otway and without fully thinking what I was in for I signed up for the 100:eek:, my first, luckily my mate will be joining me.
So that's why I'm now on the look out for other events, to get ready for it. My next event will hopefully be the Surfcoast 6hr, if I can rope my mate in and get time off work:D.

Yeah - don't bother with the pioneer. You'll feel a bit embarassed lining up with a bunch of 10 year olds. ;)
Unless you are 10, in which case - go for it!
I did the 50 this year. It was a bastard because of the rain, but I think the track choice will be better this year with alternatives if the tracks turn to slurry.
Having done the 50, I _really_ recommend doing the 100km. The reason is that of the first 50km, only 15% or so is single track. It's mainly rough firetrails and some bitumen. The second 50km is more like 90% single track. Lotsa riding around all the fun tracks near Forrest.
I had planned to go again, but given I live in Northern NSW, and I'm flying to Japan the weekend after, I'm not sure if I'll have the spare money to cover flights, travel and all that. Shame - cos it was great fun.

Well i'll be there doing the 100 (as a virgin), so if anyone is keen to just kick back and enjoy the ride with me, i'm in no rush. It'll be the first big one of the year i aim to do, also looking to follow up with BMC, Dirtworx etc afterwards.

should i bother with a (xc) dually for the 50 or would a light hardtail be better?

hmm not sure. There are parts where a dually would be good - some very fast downhill rough firetrails, but there's a lot of climbing. If it's a good dually that doesn't bob too much, and doesn't weight too much, then go for it as it's a long race and comfort would be appreciated.
On the other hand, there's a lot of climbing and it's nice to be as light as possible. Also, I'm used to my hardtail and haven't ridden duallies much.
This year I spent most of my time pushing or carrying my bike thanks to the awful mud, so low weight was great. :)
A hardtail would be fine IMO. Most of the climbs (if not all) are smooth, downhills you're out of the saddle anyway. It's the 2nd half where a combination of fatigue, roots and ruts makes you want a duallie.

This will be my third year doing it...
Go for whatever bike you are most comfortable on, first year I did it on a hardtail, then this year I did it on a Duallie, I'll do the next one on a hardtail again. I think a Duallie will be better for comfort reasons, but the hardtail will be lighter on the climbs.
Just don't make the mistake i did, don't bring your bike with a 2x9 setup and a worn rear tire and think you will be able to climb muddy climbs. :)
Every year I enter this thinking i'll smash it and keep the pace high, within the first 10km I go into survival mode... 3rd times a charm!

Presuming this is the "everything about the OO" thread!
Was wondering if anyone stayed at the caravan park(s) last year and if it was feral at all? I'm guess that they're packed with 1200 knackered MTB'ers? Going down with the family so want to make sure its a pleasant experience so I can do it again if I'm crazy enough.
Cheers,

Yeah we did. We stayed in a cabin at the Pisces holiday park which was pretty swish. Didn't seem to be teaming with mountain bikers. When i booked about 2 months ago for the race next year they were already filling up (the cabins, not sure about the campsites) so i would suggest ringing around soon.

I got into town pretty late this year, with no pre-booked camping. I ended up just driving up some backroad into the hills, and putting up a tent on the side of the road. Had a great sleep. Damn it was cold in the morning though.
The following night I stayed at the free camping spot near Forest. Really beautiful area.
Enjoy!
Accom is pretty tight already. I booked a more upmarket unit for this coming year as all the van parks/cabins seem to be full in AB and Marengo. Actually worked out cheaper as it's the units we stay in every easter. The 'landlady' gave us a discount for this reason. Everywhere is very expensive at that time of year.
We stayed in a cabin at Pisces van park this year which was great. Surrounded by MTB'rs, but they are a much higher class citizen than your average holiday rabble...;)

I used to holiday there before I got into biking. I'm stepping up in the world :)
Still thinking about the 100km, which is nearly as much effort as actually doing it for this brain.
