I'd been eyeing off this road bike on eBay for a week now (it was on eBay for $900 a while ago), the asking price was $600 (starting bid). A few hours before the auction ended I mailed the seller and offered $400, and explained that I was just after a junker to do the Sydney to Wollongong ride with. He suggested that I take a look at the bike in person which I did.

Daryll was a nice guy, his house had a huge sold sign on it outside, he was basically having to move out because the new buyers are moving in to the house he'd been renting (with his wife and kids). He was moving, and a bit tight on cash, that was the only reason why he was selling the bike. He liked the idea of me riding it to Wollongong.

I mentioned that there was a Jim Bundy bike going on eBay for $350 (like Frank Paino, also a very respected Australian frame builder from the 80's) and Daryll mentioned that Jim Bundy actually wanted to buy his bike, inspected it in real life and said to eBay it for $900, which Daryll did a while ago but got no bites, thus he re-listed it at $600. I ended up walking out of there with the bike at $475 which is an absolute steal.

I did a bit of research on the history of the Paino:
- In the 80's Frank Paino had a shop in Sydney (Miranda Cycles) and he built cutom road bike frames. Gary Sutton (who is currently the NSW Institute of Sport's head cycling coach) won a world championship on a Paino in the early 80's and that gave Frank Paino the right to use the world cup colours on his frames.

Oh god. I can only imagine what this bike is going to turn out like.

Justin Fox
21-10-2008, 12:56 PM
I used to ride a road bike, then got into mountain bikes but riding a road bike is just so unfamiliar to me now. I feel as if I'm about to go over the bars when I ride a road bike, the stance is just so not relaxed so the 1st thing I wanted to try was a riser bar.

I whacked on my damaged carbon bars (off the Reign) and played with different grip positions (IE: Moving them further and further in towards the stem). I settled on 500mm and chopped them up. The risers instantly made the bike feel more familiar than the drop bars. I felt that the bike was easier to control and more fun to ride. I settled on 500mm wide, not too wide to look silly and not too short to feel and look silly. The only problem was that I felt very cramped upo as the rider bars brought the bars so much closer to my body.

I had planned to drop a load of dosh on the Paino. I spent the week concepting and building up a wishlist of great parts. The first part on order was a set of Velocity Deep V wheels in purple (gold spoke nipples of-course lol). I really wanted to offset the old skool frame with some super crazy in your face bling wheels, thing is, Velocity are out of purple rims and that disrupted the whole plan as it gave me time to think some more.

Grant at Mc Cyclery thought it would have been a shame to remove the vintage Campagnolo gear from the bike (I had removed the quick releases, front chainring/derailleur and was contemplating a new Sugino crankset). Same goes for the Campagnolo hubs, which he says are worth a pretty penny. After talking to my mate Matt, who says I'm a lucky fucker to score such a lovely bike with great Australian history I re-thought all of the modifications that I was going to do and I've decided to just leave her be.

I put the drop bars back on as the risers, apart from being very "trendy" and fixie inspired, brought the bars too close to me in any case. I dropped in to Mc Cyclery again and bought some brand new cabling for both brakes and shifters. It's so nice to not have to tune up the gears, friction shifting rocks. Grant was out of toe clips so I ducked into Europa Cycles in Kingsford hoping to find some vintage gear.

Europa and John have been around forever. I bought my road bike from them when I was 16/17 (I forget), it was a Europa steel frame with friction shifting, lovely bike which I later destroyed (I ran over a cat). They used to have a huge store on Anzac Parade, they also had a store in Clovelly and on Clarence St. in the city across from Clarence Street Cyclery. I haunted the staff a lot, and even did hours at the Clovelly store in exchange for parts for a mountain bike build.

It's just so awesome he's still there, the now tiny "new" shop is a time warp, nothing has changed and John is in the store running it with his wife and his son. He's an old man now, his hands are a bit shakey but he got a little excited when I said I had an old Paino bike I wanted some parts for. Specifically some white handlebar tape that refects the era, some chrome toe clips and white leather straps. John ducked into the store room out the back, and after what felt like an eternity, he came back out with some goodies for me.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3068/2951432530_647497a709_o.jpg
Check out the goodies I bought: French AFA toe clips, Europa/Campagnolo white leather toe straps and vintage handlebar tape. Even the recipt John wrote for me is old skool cool!

- Edit: Love the toe clips and straps, they feel great. The bars I still have to get used to. On a bad note, the handlebar tape was nowhere near long enough for the whole drop bar (it could only do the ends to the brakes) That's a massive shame. Looks like I'll have to settle for something else.

I knew the lure of farkin was too great. Looks sweet but what happened to the rear brake????

Justin Fox
21-10-2008, 02:48 PM
Ah all the original gear is back on 'Ross. That was me being me, weenie parts I had lying around made their way onto the bike, 8.5kg was the weight of it in that sunset pic.

The bike is looking exactly like the top picture but without handlebar tape (it's coming) and with toe clips/straps. The tyres are going to go too as they are fraying. I had ordered white tyres to go with the purple rims. The white tyres just look so damn strange now that I'm not going there.

The original plan was the keep the worn out grungey frame (there's paint missing all over it, dodgey touch-up paint, rust, etc) and replace everything else with bling, that would have been nice. But now it would make sense to respray the frame for sure. And since it's a roadie I wouldn't need to get it powdercoated. I could just get my mates at the smash repairs to paint it OR get that specialist to do it, forgotten his name... his business was local, in Sydney, Star something or other.

I'd love the frame and fork in a bright colour and have the little inlay shapes/logos painted by hand in a contrasting colour but I'll ride it as is in the Sydney to Wollongong (it's soon!) and I'll think about painting it later.

A peek at the tyres (so strange looking, yucky a bit):
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2956795115_4cbeb42978_o.jpg

And I've spent a few hours taking off chunky rust and dirt with a dremel and then polishing it all with Autosol:

Anyway, lovely to have you back!

It'd be great to see all those rust spec's and dirt cleaned completely off the frame, So that after the respray she'll be almost fully restored to her former glory (if not better!). I'd love to see it with new stckers to replace the old torn ones to give it that old school cool stock look.

Can't wait for more Justin!

To polish all the parts go to an Auto shop and pick up 'Autosol' after rubbing hard on the part (Eg. Brake Calipers and Levers) for about 1 min it will come up reeeaaalllyyy shiny, the longer you rub, the more it shines!!

You wont regret it!

Ugh. I can't believe you did that to such a beautiful bike! It was a masterpiece as it was when you bought it.
You've committed a crime by stripping it down like that- if you wanted a thrasher, you shouldn't have bought a Paino.

Im with Ango here.
It almost seems everyone gets jelous over what Justin can afford to have, hence people flaring up over basically nothing.

I enjoy reading Justin's threads, always has a story to tell, that is in depth and easy to read. Keep it up!

Justin Fox

Jealousy is a curse.

I own a modified 07 Reign 1, a $475 80's Paino Road bike and a 97 Specialized Hardrock (ooh and a BMX). NONE of these bikes add up to the price of a similar spec Moorewood, Orange, Yeti, Banshee, Nicolai, Transition (insert porn bike here).

To the haters (lol): You're obviously not reading (something you should have learnt by the age of 6-7yrs). If you could read, you would have read that I have decided to respect the bike and pretty much "restore" it.

Here's a pic of it as of 5 minutes ago (still waiting for another white tyre for the rear but not 100% on whether the white will work or not):

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3187/2963098972_b2b41f48ee_o.jpg
(yes that's the Scale in the box, sold and ready to go to Melbourne today).

And with any old bike, you HAVE to strip it in order to restore parts in any case (and besides I like to experiment). Taking those parts off not only helped me to clean them, but also to get to know the bike some more (I'm also putting a full spec list together via Google help ).

PS: It's great to be back :)
PPS: I've had a mental shift. I'm now loving the Farkin haters!

HAHA. It's OK about the haters. I'm happy with how much riding I'm doing. 2-3 trail rides a week is a luxury which I'm definitely very lucky to have and I'm definitely doing more riding than posing (or trawling through other people's old threads to quote out of context, or photoshopping funny images or writing bitchy keyboard warrior remarks).

I'm no Sam Hill but I'm a better rider at 33yrs old than I was when I was 18! That makes me happy.

The bike didn't run white tyres in the day. The tyres were ordered for the purple wheelset which I never got around to ordering. Same with the saddle. I'll leave them all on for now though. The saddle's a gel thing and it should be good for the Gong ride in a couple of weeks from now.

TI BOLTS: Sorry buys but every single Ti bolt on that Scott Scale stays on that Scot Scale. The bike was sold as is for $3k.

In regards to restoring tips: I re-found the guy that does amazing paint jobs on old frames. His name is Peter and he runs a shop called Star Enamellers.

Star Enamellers
24 Exceller Ave, Bankstown, NSW 2200
p: (02) 9790 1025

He specialises in the old school. Painting details, lugs, etc. He can also remake decals.

Another place for classic decals is:

Cyclomondo
http://stores.ebay.com.au/Cyclomondo

I've found a lot of the Campy gear on eBay (search for "NOS") and damn if you add it all up the value is double that of what I paod for the bike so I've definitely been lucky to find a bike with such great gear on it.

arghh, whilst a fixie may be tempting dont do what so many do an slaughter this nice in tact old school bike

keep deep v's far far away srom this bike, maybe slap on some open pros or even aeroheads, and concentrate on things like a new paint job (white looks great, maybe even make a bit more of the feature of world cup stripes) and really the best thing to do to this bike is to strip it and spend the hard yards polishing, and restoring all the parts, even though most look like they are in good nick.

also as far as a seat goes, you got to keep it old scool and get a rolls on there

I reckon the white tyres on both front and back would look pretty cool in a retro kind of way. I've been thinking of a cheap cruiser too for rides down to Manly along the beach front. Something retro and cheap, but not so roadie, would be a great 2nd bike.

I bought it from eBay actually (search for "cinelli cork" and you will see a few eBay stores selling it for $19AUD). Australian seller too, also came in a hurry. Unlike the other bar tape I bought, this tape is VERY easy to install nicely and came with everything. Plugs, finishing off tape (which was rubbish so I used electrical/PVC tape instead), 2 little pieces for under your brake hoods and PLENTY of tape enough for a whole drop bar.

With the exchange rate being so bad I'm looking local and so far I'm finding goodies for the Paino locally.

OK, the rear tyre came in the mail (they stuffed my order up, but acknowledged it and sent me the other tyre last Friday).

She's all ready for the Gong ride (but I'm not!). I've been feeling a little nervous about completing the 90km's as I haven't done any endurance training at all. I'm sure I'll make it, nervous energy is just something I go through before events.

With the help of family and friends I've raised $185 (not much but it's something) so far for the MS Society which is a good thing. Looking forward to the ride!

How do you like the look with both tyres in white? I reckon it looks pretty cool - certainly unique.

Just a small update:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/2985056829_7eedaa706e_o.jpg
I was feeling a bit of numbness and pain in my hands from holding onto the brake hooks, and this was only after the first 10km ride. I made the following changes in prep for the Gong ride last weekend:

Green - Saddle is now 1cm lower and also level to stop me from sliding forward and putting more weight onto the bars.

Blue - Bars are tilted up some more which in turn brings the brake hooks closer to me (I am less stretched out). It was suggested to me to point the bar ends toward the rear axle as a general rule of thumb.

Red - As a result from the changes, the brake levers are too far away for me when I use the drop bar position. Unfortunately no reach adjustment at all on these Suntour Superbe Pro levers.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3282/2994785854_5aeb350268_o.jpg
The tweaks worked well and I was only feeling some slight tightness in my shoulders and neck in the last 20km's of the Gong ride. The bike was amazing going uphill out of the national park but the brakes were so bad that I basically had to do massive brake burners on every single downhill as I wouldn't have been able to stop at all if someone/something was to fuck up in front of me. It was more due to the lever action than the actualy rims/pads so it's something I might look into. All in all I loved it and was so glad I was riding the Paino rather than my single speed or Reign on slicks.

Matt (ukalipt) suggested Star Enamellers for painting frames ages ago. I called them in regards to the Reign but they spray, not powdercoat and I believe mountain bikes need a stronger finish that powdercoating gives. Since then I've had frames powdercoated on the cheap by Mr. Clean, and on the not so cheap by Grip Sports but the Paino is a roadie and doesn't need to be powder coated, she's getting the Royal Treatment (as Matt puts it).

The guys at MC Cyclery (formerly Maroubra Cycles) helped me take off the headset and bottom bracket (I didn't have the tools). Grant at MCC also said that I had no say in the matter at all, and that powdercoating it would be sacrilegious! He said I had to take it to Peter of Star Enamellers if I wanted to do it right (Grant has his own paint guy but still suggested Peter from Star Enamellers do the job).

I drove out to see Peter in Blacktown and was greeted by perhaps the nicest guy I've ever met. He instantly recognised the Paino, and said he knew Frank Paino but hadn't seen or heard of him in a long time. He also commented on how Frank Paino made amazing frames but the best bit of news after a bit of an inspection was that Peter thinks he was the guy who painted this very frame back in the 80's as he did a lot of work for Frank Paino back then!

I couldn't be happier, the frame is in great hands. It won't be cheap, or quick but I'm happy to pay and wait.

I used to work with Cranky Franky in Bikes R Us in Parra YEARS ago(round 2000)! Scares the shit out of most people, including me at first, (and he had a filing cabinet full of dept of fair trading letters to prove it!) but he is a top bloke and truely a legend! Havent seen him for a couple years now, and Im glad you put the trad gear back on, cause if frank Had of seen that bike with flat bars n what not, he would have walked right up to you and "stabbed you in the eye with a pen" quote/unquote! :)

Neither could I. Will look awsome.

Is he doing original decals or the orginal decals with some mordern flair?

Very nice as with all your work :D

I had a vintage steel Viner frame dropped off the powdercoaters last week to be done in white. Should be back early next week and the build shall commence. It'll be quite different to what you've done but I'll post it up to compare.

That's so awesome!

Amazingly he thinks he still has some Paino decals from the 80's and he's going to look hard for them. But I'm not a fan of the Paino logotype/font. The details like the heart with a "P" and the "Paino" as well as some lug details on the frame will be painted a lovely ferarri red (instead of black) and I've sourced the exact same Columbus tubing decal to re-apply to the seat tube.

After checking out Ray Dobbin's amazing site, and his page on polishing I thought I had to at least give polishing the vintage Campagnolo parts on the Paino a good go.

I dropped into Bunnings and picked up a $59 grinder (damn power tools are cheap these days). I also bought the right cutting and polishing wheels and compounds, some masks and clear specs too (might also come in hand for raining/muddy rides in future lol).

AMAZING bikes/site.

Progress has been slow. I've not buffed any of the parts yet and I've only knocked down one week of the 4 weeks that it's going to take before I get the frame back from Peter.

Greg Softley from Cyclomondo (http://stores.ebay.com.au/Cyclomondo) is the man when it comes to retro bicycle frame decals and I just received some COLUMBUS frame decals for my Paino frame. At the bottom of Greg's instruction sheet is a big plug for Peter Fleming from Star Enamellers. I figured that these guys worked together!

Old Columbus decal.

My new ones (and Greg chucked in a couple of free Campagnolo decals in too!) which will go onto the frame once Peter from Star Enamellers gets it back to me with fresh paint!

That's awesome. It's inspired me to buy some replacemet frame decals for my bike - eBay link (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SANTACRUZ-Heckler-decals-Santa-Cruz-Frame-Stickers_W0QQitemZ280281900005QQcmdZViewItem?hash= item280281900005&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318).. ...not sure about them coming from Uruguay though.

I owned a Paino a while back. It was small (48 cm) and was used by my kids for juniors racing. I bought it second hand for $800 and sold it 3 years later in 2005 for $650. It had a full Shimano 600 8-speed STI groupset which probably dates it around 1995/1996 and was a great little bike. I sold it to a guy in Newcastle who was going to give it to his sister.

I found a few old shots. The picture quality is not great but I thought you might be interested to see another of Frank's bikes.

joemax - thanks for sharing!

It looks a lot like a Paino that was on eBay only 2-3 weeks ago sold by eBay seller 'jb150104' who often sells smaller road bikes (I bought one off him a while back, an Apollo road bike made by Kuwahara).

It's been a long wait but one I've been very patient about. I've yet to polish all the parts in any case but I've just got my frame back from Peter at Star Enamellers. Peter also confirmed for me that the tubing was Columbus SLX , frame and fork as well.

Still spinning out that he's the man who painted this very frame in the 80's and now he's painted it again. :)

Some more new goodies.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/3035976221_4acfde6ac8_o.jpg
I scored this amazing NOS set of Dia-Compe Aero Gran Compe brake levers off eBay for my whiteout Paino road bike for $50. What a steal! They even come with plastic cable guides which will hopefully = better braking).

I've steered clear from proper track pedals as even my flat pedals dig into my shoes so instead I've gone for super comfy MKS pedals made for wearing with sneakers.

I couldn't resist buying a pair Adidas Samba's. Flat, comfy, stiff sole and they should fit into the toe clips and pedals easy too.
