Yeah, building up a an XC/Trailriding bike. I want a 4-5" travel fork. I want to spend approximately $400 or so. I work in a store, so any fork that has an RRP of around $650 (unlikely) will do. Otherwise it's the 2nd hand option.
Currently there are two forks on the cars...some fully overhauled with new parts Manitou Blacks w/ SPV for $400, or a pair of Fox Talas RL's with creaky crowns for $200. It'll cost around $250 to fix the crowns on the Fox, if they ever need fixing.
Anything else I should know? The Blacks are looking good, but so is the money saving side of Fox. Hmm.

I'd say the foxes, but it's a toughie. Personnally i'd prefer the extra stiffness and air internals of the fox, but it comes down to whatever floats you boat...
foxes are pretty pricey(i think) the manitous are hard to beat - spv works a treat, air or oil - what he said "what ever floats you boat"

He gave prices for the Fox and the Manitou, and the Fox is half the price...
I'd go with the Manitous, the blacks are very underrated forks IMO.

Yeah, I'm think the Blacks too. When I build up a 4x bike I could chuck them on...

I'd buy the Fox's, repair and overhaul them, and you'd be set. I'd imagine they'd be a far and away better fork than the Black's...The only advantage I can see in the black's is the SPV, but then, do you need it , really? I dunno about anyone else, but I seemed to be able to ride trails/XC with 3-4" forks without any real trouble in all those years when there was no such thing as SPV....
I'm planning on going with Talas's on my hardtail when I put it back together - I've had it for like 8 years and it deserves some nice forks finally :D

wait, if the fox is 200, and fixing them is 250, then thats no any cheaper and "money saving" than the black, but i reckon, go for the fox.:P

i think he means that the fox's creak but are rideable and dont need fixing
until the crowns give way

I think i saw some '04 psylo xc's for sale on here for about $400-450, they were in top nick, i think dunk had them for sale, and i've traded with him, very quick response and delivery of gear, if i had the money to buy them i'd go for them…

Wombat - I really have to stick to what we stock at work. We do get in Rock Shox from time to time, but we really push Fox, Manitou and Marzocchi. Plus, I'm not a big fan of Psylo's.
Everyone is saying what they would do...but no one is saying why...

Alright, I'd go with the Manitous because they're an excellent XC fork (and can take more punishment than I think most people would expect), they feel excellent and the damping (and the adjustments) actually does a lot. I don't like the idea of buying something you know has a problem, then thinking you'll fix it up later - it's like buying a car without a RWCert, chances are you could be up for a lot more than you expect (although obviously not so much in this case).

nobody has said the rockshox Duke. it is talked about so little but is pretty tough and will hold up. out of the two, i would go with the Black, and for you, floody, TALAS is Fox's version of SPV

I'm getting the Fox. I checked out a few pairs we have at work today and they are the way to go.
