im getting into the whole mtb thing and i was just wondering where are some good places to ride in the Sydney region...

Try searching this dude. Have a look at www.trailflix.com.au. Depend on you riding, theres pleanty of fast downhill around sydney's bushland, but depends on if you can ride back up the hill. Try oxford falls, cascades, manly dam etc.

Here is a site devoted to Sydney's Northern Beaches trails, this link is a ride someone has organised at Red Hill. Plenty of 'freeride' type tracks in there as long as you don't mind pedalling back up:
