hey guys i was wondering what advantages does a 26" and 20" trials bike have over the other or vice versa?
why have the above difference in the first place?
(side note im thinking about getting one. maybe around the $800-1000 mark. what could i look at. i have NO idea what is a good trials bike brand is just so u know)

From my limited knowledge:
-Stock bikes are wayyy easier to ride a distace on, so if you have to ride to where you want to trials it up, you need to take that into consideration.
-Well built wheels on a mod bike are extremely strong.
Check out this years Norco Evolve and the Monty lineup. Best beginner bikes out there.
My advice if your researching about bikes is to goto Pinkbike Boards>Trials>Goto the thread 'how to become a trials god overnight'> Look at the links in that thred, they have very good information about choosing stock of mod.
Ill add more as i think of it....

hmmm well other then one having 26" wheels and the other 20"
- 26" tend to be geared - 8/9 speed
-20" go for single speed
- from what i am told, 20" is the best to learn on, although 26" are easier to do stuff on, albeit once u have learnt.

20" has shorter chainstays = easier to balance on the back wheel.
20" bikes are apparently considered as "cheating" because of this.

There ya go.

26 probally easier to get places...usally geared..
20 easier to lear basics...mmm...can be very uncomfortable to ride long distances...some dont even have seats.

ive got some of the basics down. i can pedal kick of ledges and stuff and up small ones. and my balance needs a bit of work. just after something a bit easier to work with.

26" is easier to roll up stuff and 2 wheels moves
20" is easier to throw around.. sidehops etc
But mods are becoming more and more like stock bikes.. eg Zoo have released the 20" Python which has a 1040mm wheelbase (which is crazy long, about the length of a 26" Brisa!!)
26" is much easier to get parts.. can use road/mtb parts a lot of the time
20" is harder to get parts but less maintenance.. ie gears, derailleurs, chainline etc
Also in regards to your question- 20" trials was devised as a training for motorbike trials (by Pedro Pi, father of trials legend Ot Pi). 26" trials kinda "evolved" out of mountain biking, Hans Rey would have played a vital role in this. And thus the rest, they say, is history..
20" has shorter chainstays = easier to balance on the back wheel.
20" bikes are apparently considered as "cheating" because of this.
Cheating? 20's are the "real" trials bikes... or so I have been lead to believe.

hey im probably wrong but cant u just throw on bmx stuff like rims, hubs and so on. i havn't seen a 20" trials bike with gears. i maybe wrong again though.
at the moment im definatly leaning towards the 20" just because its tad bit cheaper and i like the idea of doing those 360 spins. :D

Might be able to use BMX front rim and tyre, but the rear is actually 19" as far as I know....Could be wrong though....
I've ridden some trials in years gone by...you can go bigger with a 26" bike with more confidence, in my opinion, but then again you can leanr some big moves on a mod pretty quick.
I personally like a mod bike for trials, so thats what I'd buy - the getting places argument is a moot point, since a properly set up 26" trials bike would be a major arse pain to ride anywhere, anyway - unless it was something like a Norco TT/moment or similar.
If you just want to play around at trials, sling some rigids and a small bashring on the torrent, and see if you enjoy that first - better than spending $800-1000 dollars on a trials bike. I would seriously do that first. And not necessarily with something like DMR suspension length forks, something shorter would be better - see if you can find cro-mo Kona or GT rigid forks, GT cro-mo ones being the tankiest. Though you'll probably need to stick a vee brake or something on the front.
I shouldn't really post this, but if you really really want a mod bike, PM me and I can hook you up with a nicely upgraded raceline rhyno 20" for about $550+ shipping, its got Brisa forks, black magura hydro rim brakes, Monty oversized bars and stem, ACS freewheel, and its in great condition structurally.

i been using the torrent (2003 model) and its starting to become a bit hard to use. i can pedal kick around 1m + and i think its time to get something a bit more suitable.
fuck rom u post shit.
20inch is easier to handle beggining. dont bother with the mony x-alp its a pos. go the new school bikes, i.e echo zoo, onza (they have extremely long wheelbases makes bigger gaps possible and looks better) i rode a x-alp learnt all the basics. then rode a echo team and fuck me everything was easier gapping, dropping, upping, and balancing. go mod u wont regret it

Sorry mate I meant 20" don't have to tune derailleurs n gears etc!
I wouldn't use bmx stuff for trials... u can use it but it would be heavy etc
If you want to see Echo bikes etc and better yet RIDE them come out riding. A few people here have them.. check the Wednesday night rides and the Sydney Trials (http://sydney.biketrials.com) ride page.
A lot of ppl come from mtb to 26" trials (like myself, many years ago) and others delve into the dark world of 20".. muhahaha
