It's graffiti done with stencils...faster, easier to do covertly but still detailed, you see shitloads of it all over urban areas these days, huge explosion of it in Brisbane over the last 12 months.

http://www.stencilarchive.org - for examples.

I'd give it a go but alas I was born without an artistic bone in my body...

It's out of control, every kid and his dog does it now it seems. I don't mind it if it's quality artwork done with a bit of respect. But when you see some crap stencil of a gun just wacked up there straight over someone else's work, be it graffiti or another stencil, it fucked up. I love walking down the street and seeing interesting stuff, but you can pick the useless crap a mile away and hopefully it will lose it's 'cool' factor and get back to the real stuff.

OOOhhhh yeh, I got it now. I've seen it on skaters decks and stuff too. Hey dippa, do you make your own stencils or get them pre-made (or however you do it)?

I remember seeing this one in Melbourne and being impressed (first time I'd seen stencil graf stuff):
http://www.stencilarchive.org/Australia/images/AU.Mel.HaHa02.jpg

I'd be interested in giving it a go, it's the sort of art I can handle... not too much dexterity required.

Wow! now that is impressive!

I'd be keen to do it too but I'm pretty sure it would be illegal in Launceston.

Sorry about the gravedig. Finally got some of my stencils cut-out after ages of procrastination. It's amazing what you'll do to entertain yourself when farkin.net is down.

I only had one can of paint in the garage at home, so yellow will have to do... for now.

Second one is pretty cool :D , not sure exactly what it is, but it looks good!

Has anyone seen the new street art (mixture of aerosol graf, stencil and brush work) around world square in sydney? It is some of the BEST street art I've ever seen (I've travelled NY, San Fran, Paris, Amsterdam/Rotterdam and Berlin seeking it out). There is a hell of a lot of it there too! Check it out!!

Theres some cool stencil art around Newcastle, theres a wall that used to have stairs on it and all that is left now is the stair outline, some guy stenciled a guy diving down the stairs from the top, it looks mad.

Do you market your stuff?

thats some awesome stuff you guys have got there, i started making stencils couple of weeks ago, but haven't got much yet. I wanna put a couple on some shirts, but i want to do it in a screen print fashion so that the paint is thicker and washed better. so does anyone know how to make a screen printing rig(i've searched google) or have any other ideas?

ashhash
15-09-2004, 02:03 PM
so does anyone know how to make a screen printing rig

Yeah screenprinting is the shiz.
Make a wooden frame, tack some silk into it. (make sure its tight.)
Buy a squeegee (Piece o rubber basically) which is a bit narrower than your frame.
Ill leave the use of it for you to research.

Also dont fuck around with fabric paint.
Use acrylics and add a fabric medium to it.
It much cheaper and works alot better too I think.

Starting cutting!!

My first multi-layer

You don't NEED a screen printer, i managed these without one. See stencilrevolution.com for their tutorials and you'll be making sik stuff in no time flat

I've also done a design on my longboard skateboard. its saweeet

[Dig]

I've just started to do some stencilling to make t-shirts. Initially I was looking into both screen printing and stencilling but decided to stick with stencilling. I cut the stencil out of acetate (overhead projector sheets) and used a roller to apply the paint (I used an acrylic mixed with textile medium). I haven't washed them yet so I'll have to see how the paint goes in the wash.

My first t-shirt is pictured below, and I'll be working on other designs and stuff. I'll be looking at making them to sell so if anyone is a chick or knows a chick who wants a non-technical cycling top (t-shirt, long sleeve t, singlet) pm/email me and I'll tell you what the go is.

When I was at art school (uni) we could make screens for printing with photo emulsion, which meant that you could print anything (photos, drawings, I even did a feathery, transparent leaf). That would make it heaps easier for doing big runs of a design, but I may be able to suss something out for doing that in the future.

^^Hey, thanks Johnny.

I just washed some singlets that I made (printed on old scrappy bonds singlets to test) and the paint washed fine, didn't run or anything. I heat sealed one of them and not the other, and both were fine.
The paint I used was cheapo acrylic ($1.99 for a little bottle) from spotlight, so it must be the textile medium which is working.

woohoo! now i'm ready for the production line. Ladies, get ready! :D

I'm not a huge fan of stencil work, unless your the one cutting and designing them yourself.
But today I went to a Graff workshop at The Penrith Regional Art gallery and Lewers Bequest.
With the one and only HARO A.K.A The Crazy Prins
This guy is leading the way world wide into a new phase for Graff writers with hand carving entire pieces from timber, and airbrushing the colour on.
He has had about 10 or 11 Professional Art Exibitions in Japan and Switzerland and all over Australia.
If I knew how to put the link I would.
but his site is

www.thecrazyprins.com

check out his carvings they are the dope.
