For those who don't know, Google is trying it's all powerful hand at email.
And it's doing a damn good job of it.

Google's approach is to allow 10meg email attachments, and 1 gig in file storage, with a super fast interface and only small text ads.

Myself, and plenty of other people, are involved in the beta testing of the product.

If anyone else has had experience with gmail, good or bad, let me know.

also, if anyone gets invites they don't want, they can post them up here.

btw: in the past, invites have gone for as much as US$140

I haven't used it but apparently it does a lot of funky searching and sorting of messages into threads of conversation and although this does sound useful I don't see why you just can't have an email client that does it (despite that if anyone's got an invite they want to give away PM me [Edit: I now have an account - cheers Byatch]).

I think the use of 'invites' in the initial tests has also been a pretty smart marketing move on Google's part. Make it exclusive and people inherently want in.

Wouldn't a client require an ISP based account though? Gmail is online, like hotmail.
*I have basically zero knowledge on the subject, so this is an honest question*

Sure would, what I would like though is to have the Gmail functionality built into a client that you can use with any old email account. That way you avoid all the privacy issues associated with storing your email on a server owned by someone that is essentially untrusted (in a technical security sense, google explicitly have a policy of not being evil and seem to be pretty trustworthy in the human/emotional sense).

Aren't these "small text ads" targetted specifically to you depending on the content of your email? I know nothing about it, just going off what others have told me, but apparently they scan the text and give relevent linked adverts in your message?
NFI, but I still don't see what the big fuss is... although it is brilliant marketing, look at all the fools paying stupid money just so they can get in on it early.

Rik; yeah the ads are target to your email content, doesnt bother me though, at least they aint popups and as far as privacy goes, i dont really care too much, they've been doing it to my 'olsen xxx' searches for years

All sorts of ways. You need an invite from someone to get Gmail. You can get Gmail from different places, but they have to be given to you.

There should be a box above where your emails are listed saying 'You have 6 Gmail invitations. Invite a friend to join Gmail!' etc, its a blue box. Maybe you dont have invites yet?

when you log in into gmail look in the top right hand corner
next to your email address it should say

invite # friends to gmail in red text
