View Full Version : Funny crank sounds
Hi all - there is a creaking sound coming from my crank/BB. I can only hear it when putting alot of pressure on the pedals.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Could be:
pedal bearings
pedal/crank interface
crank/bb interface
bb threads
frame
Trial and error... best bet is to pull it all apart (if you have the skill), grease everything, and reassemble, ensuring it's all really tight.
so you dont think it is a bad (expensive) thing?
Thanks, ill give it a go :?

YES!11! i got that problem, tighten your cranks, both of them, did the trick for me.....well, for about 1 hour, but i got dodgy cranks atm...but rik's got the idea, i did that with the race faces and it worked awsome, but these cranks are temp so tightenings one way of doing it, PS dont do what i did and drind the teeth on the BB cup if you remove it :x

It can be caused by many things but first up just tighten your spider bolts and the bolt that goes through the middle (in line with the bb).

I've had this problem for ages, and it hasn't led to anything else. I think it comes from where the cranks connect to the BB. I tried tightening though but it didn't work too well. Ah I need new everything down there anyways.

Creaks are caused by some sort of movment, if left to creak wear will occur. Have it checked, if your BB is slightly lose you can strip the BB thread and stuff your frame.
My standard creak check list is:
1 Pedals into cranks
2 Cranks onto BB
3 BB into frame
4 C-Rings on crank
5 Bars into stem
6 Steerer into H-Set/ Stem
7 Seatpost into frame
8 Seat into seatpost
9 Derailluer hanger onto frame
After this it gets hard, at some point during this I also check for cracks in the frame.

Yea i have that occassional problem aswell.
Recently i found out that the bottom bracket is worn. ( u can wobble the cranks slightly)
That might be the problem.

i pulled off my cranks and pedals etc, then cleaned the surfaces then when putting back together, i applied a small amount of grease where two pieces came in contact with each other. eg. bb axle and inside of the cranks then did them back up. same with the thread on the pedals, put a little bit of grease on them too before re-assembly. it stops metal rubbing on metal, which causes the squeaks n' creaks.
mines all stealth now.

good checklist, creaks can be a bitch to find sometimes.

Make sure you do tighten the cranks if that is the cause of the problem. I left mine lose once and went for a ride. Ended up stripping the threading and had to replace the crank and I think the BB as well. Can't remeber too well, it was a long time ago.
