hey, im thinking of buying a magura julie for the front but it says that its uses are xc, not the dj and fr stuff i do, should i listen to this? i know that doing dj on xc frames fucks them up will this disc be alright for me? i weigh bout 60kg
You might be able to get away with them for lighter use. But over long periods of heavy braking, they'll be no good.
hmm... from the experience ive had with them (not mine), the were a BIG problem. DONT GET THEM.

I've seen a few of the lever bodies explode on impact. Not sure if the current model are, but these were made of some plastic.

what do you guys think a good disc brake would be for about 250 or 300 bucks, not cables and not hayes.
Avid cables. More powerful and more reliable than any hydro you'll find at that price point. I have a set of Hayes Mags just sitting in my garage, I've no inspiration to rebuild them as my Avids give me all the power I want.

Dont leave much room formovement there... I would Import a set of Hope's Mono Mini or M4, maybe Avid Juicy 7's - It's the only way your going to get a good brake for that brake for that much (thats like 1 end too).
Look on here and try find some Shimano XT 4Pot's (the older ones) apparently they are the flavor of the month- I hear they are pretty decent too.
Edit: Rik, Good to hear you like the Avid's- They served me well; I'm loving my Magura Marta's at the moment :D

You cant go past a pair of Armours for value.
The parts are cheap if you crash and the performance is outstanding.
Im using them for front and rear and i havnt had a single problem with them. I do DH and DJ. they are awsome value for money

have a good look 4 03 xt 4 pods personally i have ridden em n they r awsume they should come in round 300 but coz they r old and thier is a growing niche market for the classic style shimano components they may be pricey, if u were to import from america from a site like www.jensonusa.com u will get 25% of aus price due to conversion and when u do that u may be able to get sum hopes. personally i trust jenson i have been to thier shop in america and have shiped stuffed back over they r a gr8 way of importing although my frined had delays when he imported his parts over, it took him 2 weeks to get his e13
cheers hope this is what u need

Have a look on torpedo7.com
They ususally have some good prices, I think there are some carbon hayes for under $200!

i just picked up a 160mm rotor shimano xt 4-pot from chain reaction cycles. came in at $190.something insignificant including shipping, awesome brake.
Shimano Deore.
Used for DH, highly reccomended. Nice bitey feel, plenty of power, and I didn't notice any fade.
I've also used the Julie's for DH.
NOT reccomended. Fade fast and need 2 fingers to shave the speed off. And also like j5ive said, the levers break pretty easily, it's some sort of fibre/plastic.
The armours are also pretty good, the levers arent as nice as the shimanos, but if you can't find deore's to fit your budget (you can if you shop around) then go the armours/dices.
--- edit, sorry, didn't realise it was a gravedug thread. oh well. :o

whoa.... gravedig.
another vote here for Deores. Running them on two of my bikes, very happy with them.
please don't buy Maguras. We almost see more coming back in for repairs than HFX-9s.
Consider the ownership ratio - there are a hell of a lot more people running Hayes...
Did I mention that the Australian Magura importer will not warranty a lever problem, simply and only because you are not using official Magura brake pads?
