Hey all farkin people.

Im thinking about turning my xlr8 into singlespeed. single at the back. Its on a Dice twofour wheelset. I mainly use my bike for DJ and Street. this way i would eliminate chain suck and deraliour cost and damage. What would i need to do this. I E cog sizes ect

2:1 ratio
rip apart 3 casettes and take the spacers from between the cogs, space out the hub with spacers on either side of the cog so the chain line is straight, then put on the lockring.
xlr8 = vert dropouts, no? either use a tensioner or phantom gear (http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/pbpic96249.jpg), dont use a derailieur

andrew

"# of teeth in front divided by # of teeth in the back times wheel diameter. Your goal is supposed to be about 55 or something like that. For example 44/16 on a 20" = 55 and 36/13 on a 20" = 55.4 Thats where the formula comes from. "

32/16 * 24 = 48 what does this mean?

01-07-2003, 06:24 PM
what are you other singlespeeders running?

01-07-2003, 06:27 PM
what would i need for dirt and street?

andrew
01-07-2003, 07:11 PM
well, generally higher (harder) ratio for dj and lower for street, but whatever is good, just around 2:1

I am running a 32-15 setup on my bike with vertical dropouts and no tensioner. Just muck around with cog sizes, going even number of teeth-even, or even-odd and you should be able to find a setup where you dont have to run a tensioner.

what bike do you have Tom?

Hey Fuzzy,
If your XLR8 is a 14 inch you may find you have no probs setting it up SS. Ben Cory had his set up without a chain tensioner. When he put it together the chain stays were just the right length and tensioned the chain up nicely. I don't know what combination of chainrings he used and unfortunately I can't find out until he gets back from the States. Maybe just try what you've got and see how close it is!
Other option is, we just got a whole lot of Da Bomb single speed conversion stuff about three days ago including hub converters and chain tensioners which would do the job nicely.... I should have them up on th esite by the end of the week.
Hope it helps

The singlespeed convert is an old avanti hardtail.
My other bike is a Bighit pro.
My other bike is a ferrari.

Having a one-sided bashguard will make pedalling feel wonky.

Hi, If you are really trying to find the right sprockets etc to run go to www.mtbreview.com then go to message boards, then single speed. the guys there are really helpful and can point you towards a calculator to work out sprockets to chain stay length etc. I run 42/18 with a 24inch wheel on a norco 250 with trailblades etc, and 44/20 on a 26 inch cruiser.
Single speed is a bit slow for commuting bit its great for chain issues etc and so quiet.

03-07-2003, 09:02 PM
42 front and 18 rear?

whats that run like man?

Hi

42/18 runs really good with the 24 inch wheel, good all round for hills etc. you need to pick a gear that will allow you to spin ok without blowing your knees, epspecially if the seat is really low , and i run 180 mm cranks , cause it feels better when standing up.

would be fine but for that sprocket you need bmx cranks.

You could just use a shimano dx sprcket which fits a cassette spline, they are available for around ten dollars

sprocket being the thing with the kink guard mounted on it...you cant use 4 bolt cranks on it
