"As some of you may have heard, Team racer John Waddell had a really hard crash this weekend in the downhill event at Mt. Ste Anne.
I wanted to update all of you as what happened and to his condition.
John had a crash on a large finish line jump and came down and hit his head. He was knocked unconscious.
He was taken to an excellent hospital in Quebec city, Canada, which is where he still is.
He was given a cat scan and the results were very positive, no brain swelling at all, which is the best news.
Other than a small fracture in his left wrist, which does not need to be set, he has no other injuries except for a few scrapes. All his other body parts are working fine, including all arms and legs. He is responding to input, another great sign. He is also breathing on his own, with no outside help.
He is in stable condition, but at the moment he is still unconscious.
In a situation like this, where an individual hits his head as hard as John did, the first 24 hours are the most critical. John went through that period without his condition getting any worse, which is the best possible situation.
As tough as John is, although unconscious, he was trying to pull off his robe, and monitoring cords, and was pretty agitated.
Because of this the doctors gave him some medicine to help him rest.
In a situation like John's, it is quite common to remain unconscious for 3-5 days, before coming to. All indications so far are that once he wakes up, he will be fine.
Although we all know it, the sports that these athletes compete in are high risk, and injuries are always a possibility.
As the team director this season I made all of our racers where full top of the line motocross helmets for downhill. This is a decision that I am now glad I made. I don't want to think about what might be if John had not had a motocross helmet on. So please remember all of you to wear a helmet whenever you ride.
I will be staying in Quebec City with John for as long as I need to. If any of you have to get a hold of me, the best way is by email.
Thank you,"
