Is it this easy to do in Australia do you think?

Is it this easy to do in Australia do you think?
Probably.
The main thing is confidence. Since this person had alot of confidence, he wasn't questioned at all. But even if he was acting dodgy (well, dodgier than that), I doubt he'd have much hassle doing what he did, such is the nature of peoples ignorance today.

Unfortunately yes. I snapped the key to my lock once on the corner of Park and George (outside Town Hall and the QVB for those not in Syd).
I managed to borrow (yes borrow) a set of bolt cutters, stroll down the road with them in my hand, and cut the lock to the bike.
Not one person questioned me!

Argh, that's definately sad to see! I never would have thoght it could be that easy to actually get a bike with some confidence,!

There's reasons why people don't usually do anything about suspicious people breaking/cutting locks on bikes.

1. Apathy
2. If something like bolt cutters are used, it's usually done so fast that people have little time to decide a course of action. A few seconds thinking of "hm, what do I do about this?" and the person will probably already be sprinting away on the bike.
3. In that video, the only sequence that has much relevance is the first one with the bolt cutters - since it can be viewed as the most suspicious. The rest... well, the more work and time that you spend on breaking a lock, ESPECIALLY if you aren't constantly looking about you for the "owner", the more you're going to like like the owner yourself. Hence why you won't be questioned. I mean, seriously... the last one, with safety goggles, and gloves and all that? Who are they kidding? If I saw that happening, NO WAY would I think it's a thief! I would say "Well, that person lost the key to his/her lock...."

In summary... the first sequence with the bolt cutters sorta makes a point.

The rest of the sequences? Please... Exaggerating the process of stealing a bike simply makes a person look like the owner.

I once helped a friend cut the lock that was holding his bike (stolen two weeks earlier in the same suburb) to a rack. The only people that stopped were some dodgy crim looking guys who only seemed interested in helping. They kept trying to show us how it was 'done' and one of the guys was like "haven't you done this before?"

I thought I was doing just fine but obviously my technique was a little lacking....

So you think a person with all that gear, taking their time, not looking around at all, wearing safety googles, in broad daylight, in a crowded place...

You would HONESTLY think that person was stealing the bike? Be honest now... would you contact the cops?

What do you think the cop's would think if they saw this guy is the state I described earlier? Ask him for his ID? And even so, what are they going to do? It's not a car, so they can't cross-reference records, licences and regos...
