yeah its crazy huh. only the meadia on which we purchase the music or film etc on is the legal copy. same applies to mp3 players and mnidisc etc. heres where it gets more crazy- wot about buying mp3's online? ie: pay by download  or. making backup copies of our legit software? i thinks a clause we can do that in the fair trading act somewhere, so ive heard...
personally, i think aust should get out asses to figure out a streamlined copyright laws. there so much conflicting laws atm
dude, yes sure they r illegal, do u know a vcr is illegal
thats my point, thanks for stating the obvious
and its funny, to the media the only mp3 player is the ipod, when other companies (iriver) released hdd based player ages before, meh let the public listen to ipods, its there loss :P
that doesnt exactly make the iRiver legal either 8)
the article didnt say iriver now did they

the current copyright laws on music protection is u r allowed to make a private copy of it as long as long as u didi buy it, same goes with videos, if ur then thinking about the radio, if u play the radio in a shop u even have to pay i think its around 500 bucks a year to an orginisation called apra
anyway. dont be discouraged vcrs have been out since the 70s and r still an awsume medium that no on can spy on. so just dont worry about the whole thing its like saying 888's are only 1999mm long its not worth worring about
so what ur saying is contradicting the article, there saying it is illegal to copy music from cd to hdd(either computer or mp3 player)
Apparently while the US and the UK have a semblance of a fair use copyright law, Australia doesn’t and anyone who has copied songs from a CD onto an iPod or computer hard drive has fallen foul of the law.

Shure e2c's (http://www.headphones.com.au/prod_one.php?productID=17#top) are available from Headphonic (http://www.headphones.com.au), I just got a pair of Sennheiser's from there and haven't got any complaints. Or were you after a real life store?
On the other point, yes Australian fair use laws are screwed up. Unfortunatly things don't look like they're going to get any better - see the FTA thread (http://www.farkin.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18424) for why.
cheers man, been looking for theses bastards for a while, 15db sound cancelling, they look sick on and oh so pimp :P

I know with software, as i studied this type of thing, that you are allowed to make a BACKUP copy for yourself. I am almost 100% certain this is the case with music as well.
Meh. The law.
Naz, those headphones are sick, im looking for something like them atm. :)

Read it for yourself, straight from the Australian Copyright Council (http://www.copyright.org.au/PDF/InfoSheets/G070.pdf):
• there is no general right for individuals to copy recorded music, even from a CD you own.
• there is no general right to copy copyright material for personal use (or “fair use” right) under Australian law.
• ownership of a physical item (such as a CD) does not give you the right to make copies (including copying
into a digital or other format).
As wrong and backwards as that may seem, that's what the law is at the moment.

I heard an article on Hack about this and apparently we inherit the US copywrite laws when the FTA goes through. (that is, we can make personal back ups)
might be wrong but as far as i can remember this is the case.
about the headphones, i think Jands is the australian importer of shure products, check this page for a list of Jands/shure resellers in NSW.

its not like its our fault or anything.
if anyones, its apple. they shouldnt be allowed to sell a product that is illegal to use.
they are not going to prosecute anyone for using ipods, just because there are so many people, and nobody really knew that it was illegal. it is ridiculous that you are not allowed to copy music from a cd onto a mp3 player. does the same go to minidisc players?
dick...you dont suppose that you could make your sig a big bigger? :? ,
but on the topic of illligal music, the australian government would have alot of trouble trying to stop all the copying going on right now, its too much for their worth...even if they do introduce fines, it would still probably cost more to lookinto it and fine than to just change the law

nope ipods are shit, crap build quality, worse features, not to mention the fiasco with there supposed 8 hour battery, and there over rated.

yeah like you said a million times already. Is someone paying you to promote iriver or something? Meanwhile i'll happily listen to my ipod that is working perfectly, yeah it may be over-hyped, but what are apple supposed to do? "uh yeah well there are other mp3 players around with more features.. but ours are white!". Why don't you ever bring up your broken iriver?

I do have something here (http://www.dfat.gov.au/trade/negotiations/us_fta/final-text/index.html) that could be relevant. (http://www.dfat.gov.au/trade/negotiations/us_fta/final-text/chapter_17.html) ....if anyone wants to look up the Trademark Law Treaty (1994) (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=Trademark+Law+Treaty+%281994%29&sourceid= mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&cr=countryAU) etc that is.

i agree, whats with all this ipod bashing?
most people dont buy them for all their features (not that they have any). all you can do on them is play music, which is good. what more do you want? theyre cool because theyre minimilistic and easy to use.
u dont need radio, or filebrowser or whatever else nerdy you might want. they play music, hold heaps of songs and that all that you need in an mp3 player.

my iriver broke that is correct, thats because i rode with it in my pocket ran into shit fell on it dropped it a million times.
but 90% of people think ipods are the be all end all, they play 3 codecs, mp3, apple loseless codec and wav i think. come on
all im sayin is there a better mp3 players for the same price. and it may or may not be a iriver.
but ye the botom line is i hate ipods :D

Hehehe  when a good song comes onto the radio I plug my optical cord into it and into my MD and records songs onto it...BUT my MD has shat itself and has screwed up. SOOO i want to get an iPod. I'm thinking of getting the Mini coz i dont have 10, 000 songs and it's small and light PLUS I can get it from Singapore, which ends up being about 80 smacks cheaper...
