View Full Version : I think I've broken my wrist...

I just can't win. I went to hop down off a bench that I was sitting on the other day, put all my weight on my left palm and pushed off... I heard a small pop, gave it a rub and didn't think twice about it...
It's hurting a little right now, but what bothers me most is a lump, about 5mm tall and the shap of a marble, right on top of my wrist...
Xray time, yet again. I'm so going to get cancer.

If you have broken your wrist, you will know about it!
I couldn't even get my gloves off when I supposidly broke mine, it took me about 30 mins and I had to use my teeth, my bike laid across a busy track and I could not get it out of the way no matter how hard I tried, I eventually made it down and to the hospital where they said it wasnt broken but it didn't get better. 2 weeks later i was still in the same amount of pain and the hospital rang me back up and told me theyd made a mistake!!!!!!

Oh dude, I know broken bones. Some hurt like fuck, some a barely noticeable. This lump shouldn't be there...I've put it down to 3 things. 1 - I've broken/dislocated it. 2 - It's been there all my life and I haven't noticed it until now. 3 - I'm growing a siamese twin.

Is the lump on a tendon? ad does it "click" when you move you're wrist?
(Disclaimer: go and see a doctor)

Oh dude, I know broken bones.
you sure do
i reckon that it may be dislocated. or a blood vessel popped and "ballooned". i ran into a tree once and hit my cheek on the tree. in seconds it was swollen. does it feel squishy?

RICE it until you are certain of what the injury is. See a doctor and/or get an X-ray as soon as you can.
If you immobilise it now you reduce the chance of further damage.
*Edit : Ok, for those who don't know about RICE.
Rest : Avoid any movements or activities which cause pain.
Ice : A wrapped ice pack or cold compress will help to reduce the swelling and eases pain and discomfort.
Compression : Apply a firm supportive bandange to give an even pressure over the injured area, use light padding under the bandage if the pain is severe.
Elevation : Elevating the injured area helps slow he flow of blood and reduces swelling. But, do not attempt to elevate a part you suspect is fractured until it has been splinted or fully immobilised.
That should help you out until you get to the docs.

see a doctor.. once i couldnt move my wrist properly, and i thought it was just a bit stiff so i cracked it- then a bone or something popped out the bottom of my wrist near the vain.. man that scared the shit out of me- noone knew what it was but i had to have this brace for like a month!
my advice:
see a doctor.

if u can move it alittle it could be a gangleon(spelling?), i dont know what the hell the are but my mum has one and its freaky, but in a way cool 8) but you should go to see a doctor and see what it is.

M8 if it's a dislocation then that's pretty bad, The longer you you leave a dislocation the worse it gets and the harder it is to put back. I have a friend who broke some bones in his hand (i think they were the ones in between the knuckle and the wrist) and he didn't really notice it that much, he actually played basketball the next day. But i'm no doctor you should probably get it x-rayed.

yeah, ive got those in my wrists, but theyre not hard, theyre kind of hard, but still squishy, kind of like a tendon. I doubt its one of them if its hard, but you never know, it could differ from person to person.

First of all we must diagnose the problem:
DISLOCATION or FRACTURE
I dislocated my arm the other night playing volleyball. The best thing to do with a dislocation is (IF POSSIBLE) rotate the wrist gently and try to get it to go back into its socket. If it doesn't do so then go directly to the hospital. Dislocated parts can pinch nerves, veins and result in stretched muscles and ripped ligaments and tendons.
They are recognisable due to swelling in the area and potential bruising. May have limited to nil movment of the part. The area may look deformed, with depressions and small lumps from where tissue has been moved. Pack with ice (directly onto skin for this case) keep it immobilised and go to the hospital. I wouldn't recommend elevation or compression, only because any blood circulation you may still have could be cut off by making it harder for the circulatory system to service this area. If proper steps aren't taken, you may continue having this problem on a permanent basis.
A fracture is sorta the same as a dislocation. Except I'd recommend keeping it in a splint, any more damage cause by not acting a few days ago can make the situation worse. Do not compress the area. do not try and force the fracture back together yourself.
Overall dude, I'd definately recommend visiting your doctor and getting their PROFESSIONAL opinion on the situation.
Good luck!
I fucking hope it is. I'll call him Jeremy, and we can eat dinner together.

One thing not to do. Unless of course you are a doctor and think it is the best course of action. If you have not been trained, do NOT touch it. You risk making the injury more severe.
Pack with ice (directly onto skin for this case) keep it immobilised and go to the hospital.
Applying ice or a cold pack constricts blood vessels, slowing bleeding that causes the injury to swell. So right with that.
I wouldn't recommend elevation or compression, only because any blood circulation you may still have could be cut off by making it harder for the circulatory system to service this area.
As I mentioned, do not elevate the part if you suspect a fracture until it has been splinted or fully imobilised.
A fracture is sorta the same as a dislocation.
A dislocation is a displacement or separation of a bone from it's normal position at a joint. Dislocations are generally more obvious than fractures because the joint appears more deformed. The displaced bone end often causes an abnormal lump, ridge or depression making them easier to identify than musculoskeletal injuries.

Oh well, that's the nature of forums I suppose. Use Roffles advice, use my advice even PM Naz and ask for his advice. But I think we're all agreed that you should go see a doctor and get this sorted out properly by a professional.
btw: I've got problems with my right arm, it dislocates on a frequent basis so I find putting it back in saves alot of wait time at the doctors and the steps I said work well for me. meh.

Doctor for sure.
Sorry my post seemed aggressive, it's just I'd hate to think he fractured his arm and made it worse by trying to push it back in.
If your right arm keeps dislocating you should probably get something done about that.. I know that some joints, such as the shoulder or fingers dislocate easily because their bones and ligaments do not provide enough protection.
It's like that movie where the guy is in the straight jacket and he dislocates his arm to get out..

I try to do strengthening exercises for it (and not that you dirty minded bastards) but it's persistent and likes to wreck havoc by popping out of its socket to say g'day every few months.
When I was at volleyball I asked a guy to rotate my arm and put it back in the joint, and he totally freaked out and said it was against his ethics. larf.

 Sure..
Keep up the strengthening exercises, although do not push the area hard. Dislocations are usually caused by severe forces, what are you usually doing when it pops out?

Always something weird.
Came out when I put on a shirt, when i bumped my arm against the corner of a wall and a few times when I spike in volleyball. Grrrr stupid arms.
Anyways it's 6:30!!! Pub crawl tonight homiez!!!

Thats kind of random..
Probably just a weak joint, strengthening exercises are the way to go if so. The area will build up eventually with the exercises.
