I lived in Carins from 1992 - 1995. I disn't ride at the time but have heard from others that the riding up there is awesome.

The community itself, if you live in an outer suburb it's not too bad. I was up there only last year for a holiday and it was good. The town centre is VERY touristy. It has become one of the tourist capitals of QLD.

The weather is crap!! All you want to do in summer is go to the beach but you can't because of the stingers (don't trust the nets, unless the water is VERY calm), but the beaches are good in winter. Summer is Hot and Muggy, and it's also cyclone season plus wet season, so it rains as well, but thats cool cos you'll be wet from head to toe from sweat anyway. Winter or dry season is the best time of the year to be there. Temp doesn't get below around 10 - 15. Days are really warm.

The best part about Cairns is it opens up the entire far north QLD. Go to Green Island and Fitzroy island. Drive to Cook town and even Weipa if you feel energetic. See the Daintree, the Reef. It's amazing for all of that stuff.

I personally couldn't see myself living there again (even though I was only 9 -12 when I did live there). I guess if you like small cities then it would be good. Although had HEAPS of fun when I was there for a holiday. Awesome night life!!

::waits for Cairns riders to respond::

Dude, my wife and I haven't ruled out moving up there at this stage.
Uuuber hot and muggy in summer, you MUST have AC in your house, car, and workplace.

20minute Downhill runs, and probably 20 of them 8)

Great mtb scene, I went up there for a hol a few months back, posted a help thread on here and cairns mtb sight. I had blokes taking me for runs and offers of more (Damn the rain  )

Oh, and if you are single :P
The pool is packed full of naked backpackers

I have lived in Cairns for 16 years and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Yes we have two distinct seasons, one that is hot and rains a lot, the other cooler and with not to much rain (ATM is the best time for riding, but its an all year round thing here really).

There are heaps of mountain bikers here, as well as some really fantastic riding.

Cairns seems to have an image of a party/tourist town and that would pretty spot on. The locals are laid back and friendly. It has everything any other city would have except the millions of people. Population of around 130,000 people.

Outer suburbs are the place to live though.
