Is there anyway that you can stop the council from knocking down jumps?
Should we approch them and ask if it would be alright to build them in a certian area? They are not in the way of anyone.
Any other ideas?
Sorry to say this, but there isn't a snowflakes chance in hell of any council giving permission (to build jumps on council land) to a couple of kids who wander in off the street. And I really don't mean to sound patronising here but the reality is THAT'S how council will probably see your approach.
A couple of ideas worth trying.
Try and find an area on private property and get permission from the owner.
Approach a local MTB club and team up with them in an "official" approach to council.
Approach your local "community clubs" such as Rotary, Lions etc for help.
Approach you local MP and ask some ways in which you could go about getting an area for a track.
Approach a BMX club with the idea of building DJ's on their land adjacent to their track.
The main problem can be summed up in one word... LIABILITY and it wont be easy, but then again nothing worthwhile ever is.
Good luck. I'm sure others here on Farkin will have some ideas for you too.

They said age's ago that they were going to build jumps but have not followed through yet. Could we use this as an excuss, You have not built the jumps you promised so we built our own??
the only way i can think of is a human shield...
yeah the council knocked some of our run down jumps then later said we were aloud to build there again... :?
as someone once described the council: a group of F***tards

You guys should check out the council sanctioned and built dirt jumps in Tahmoor. You should also speak to Kerry at Phantom Cycles on how the local BMXers got the council to build them.

by any chance would you be talking about the little jump park next to the oval in galston. i went down there on sunday for abit of session and found logs n shit all over tha place, the jumps all ript to shit etc etc.
those jumps were 'nt the best but atleast they were jumps! i've been contenplating taking up the cause(of trying to have something a little more perminant ..) in the way of building a small jump park on that existing site.
i dont go down there too often(busy building my own dh/fr) but always have fun, whenever im down there ,idont see anyone though! apart from this onetime i was mobed by a bunch of seven year olds who thought i was evil kenevil!!but thats another story.
a mate of mine nagged (i mean, he really farkin nagged!) the coucil for like 2 years or more and finally they got approved - but - they have to wait a couple of years still after that so that the council can budget for it in the up and coming years. What a drag....
Keep building though, they dont find ALL of them...

bitchins gonna get you no where despite the effort you make, theyre more likely to tell you to piss off if you keep arguing....
solution
dig up their oval and put big jump on cricket pitch

Reasons to destroy jumps vary, but I believe the issue revolves around environmental impact & preventing injury to people. The main reason I believe jumps get destroyed is if they are attracting rubbish, stupidity, or vandalism, etc....... or are not well planned / built........ or not hidden / secret / unaccessable for evil bulldozers.

All of these ideas are better than wasting alot of energy on a track that gets flattned!! But if none of them work, don't give up. Work with society not against it, even if this means hearing NO 25 times before someone gives you permission to build some dirt jumps!!

from where the jumps area is any way, half the people are sponsored by centerlink, so the last thing the giverment is gonna do for us is allow us to dig up their land
You can get council approval for jumps if you're willing to be professional and mature in your approach to council.
Brisbane City Council and it's surrounding council's have become veritable jump-building machines in the past 2 years, there are several council approved and maintained dirt-jump parks in and around Brisbane and when the council discovered some of the best trails in the area at Ferny Grove they not only chose NOT to bulldoze them but provided a bobcat and soil to fill the gaps in and make the jumps wider. End result, these trails are now 5 massive tabletops instead of 5 massive doubles, the council has covered their ass for public liability, the riding public is largely happy and everyone co-exists peacefully happily ever after.
Adelaide also has a sweet council-approved dirt jump park, perhaps you could suggest your local council get in contact with Brisbane and Adelaide City Councils to "investigate how these councils are implementing best-practice strategic management initiatives for the construction and maintenance of bicyle jump facilities" or something like that, councils are supposed to learn from what others are doing well.
