View Full Version : Ideas of some good freeriding shoes...??

i was just wondering if people can give their input on what shoes they use when freeriding. i'm looking at getting some Etnies, because my "Dunlop volleys" at the moment are holding out pretty well with their "ankle support". But enough of that, please send pics if possible, or links, or just good descriptions on what you ride with and what a good choice of shoe is?
i use flat pedals not cleets...
Cheers... :D
i've had oakley switchbacks for about 8 months now, nuts grip (slightly harder than 5/10s but simlar to a climbing shoe) , strange colours, good support but not above your ankle.
but after 8 months they are pretty rooted so not the best value for money.
i manual to the right (when riding park) so i put my right side shoe down alot more than the left.
I use whatever random skate-style shoe that fits me well, has padding around the ankle... not so much support, but just padding to stop crank-inflicted bruises. Fairly low profile, large cell tread, and my current ones kick arse as they've got venting around the base of the shoe. Alas this allows dirt/dust in, but also stops stinkyfoot syndrome.

I read once that a harder soled shoe is better. Apparently if your sole is soft you compress it when on the downward stroke and lose some of your force. Sounds a bit pedantic to me, but now you know about it too........

i like the idea of jsut a random skate shoe that fits, that sounds like it'll do me...which is kinda what i'm looking for in the etnies.
i kind of understand about this hardness and softness, where the soft souls sompress and sort of absorb the ride, which is bloody annoying on your feet when hucking...
so i'll probs get sum random stakey shoe with not soo PHAT padding but nice n comfortable that looks kinda stylish too
siK! N' Cheers..., please give more comment if any other ideas come to mind...

Yup.
I get the weirdest looks when I go shoe shopping. First I look at the tread pattern.. then I test the sole for flex.
Too soft, and your foot swallows your pedal. But then again, too stiff (which no flat soled shoe is) and you slide all over the pedal. So a fairly stiff sole is ideal, but hard to find.

From my experience Vans shoes have been one of the best. They Have that waffle style grip which just loves your pedals. Though Atm i wear Circa which are awsome. As said before most good quality skate shoes should do the trick.

that sounds like me on the weekend, i went into a surf store n checked out the shoes, and this assisstant asked if i was right, and what i was down with every shoe on the shelf was taking it down, touching the tred and then twisting and bending it as much as possible then putting it back, so i think the assisstant thought i was a little weird, but he just doesnt realise, THAT I RIDE!!!:D
well...any shoe that has padding and a flat sole so that you get every pin lodged inside the sole giving you more grip...most shoes that have a flat sole are skate shoes and also get some with good padding...

jeff!?!?!?!..what the hell....you've never worn those shoes whilst riding :?
i mean..."whatta down!".... but i must say, very stylish but i'd prefer a skate shoe for riding, cause it aint a fashion parade..although...(Guy)
there was also a review just done on some shoes...

haha good style jeff!!!
I love my Intenses, but i know i can't get another pair. I've had success with Van's before- they grip really well, but the tacky tread desintegrates after a while- after a year mine are absolutely Gone.

Im a big fan of etnies throttles.
Stiff sole, but the tread pattern is so deep that the pins slide into the gaps, and you cant move your foot on the pedal. plenty of support, and they make an awesome "schhhink" noice when you take them off the pedal
oh and Orchid's are good too, if you can find them (tailwhip padding? how cool is that!)

i have entnies which work pretty well. however they work on some pedals and dont work on others. but my shimano dx shoes work perfect on almost all pedals. i love them so much. starting to loose chunks and what not but oh well. i picked them up on sale in cairns for like 65 bucks so no complaining there!!!!

im a big fan of my Colorado All-Mounatin Shoes; lace up eyeletted uppers, not a massive tounge, sole similar to your old boots in a kind of chunky V pattern (similar to the shoes reviewed on FARKIN) but come in at about $60?? have a squiz at your local "WILLIAMS: The Shoemen": they grip like a rake in a grommets spine but the bottoms can get a bit chewed from after about 10 months use. JUST MAKES EM GRIPPIER!

well i have soft shoes but i have 5th aswell.
nah i wear these ripcurl ones that i got at the start of the year. they get a bit chewed on the sole from the pedals, but other than that they do a good job.
next shoes im getting are the vans classics slip ons(checker shoes)
anyone got an idea how much they cost?

Pfft, amateur. Everyone knows that thongs are the only choice for the truly X-TREME/madcore freerider.
I've been wearing Orchid Teem's since about March. Comfy as hell, awesome grippy sole that seems to be wearing pretty well. RRP is $165 for Teem's and a little more for Vandever's, check em out; http://www.orchidfootwear.com

Vans TnT are my shoe of choice. There were stories about them going out of production but they were wrong. Awesomely grippy shoe, as soon as you put them on you can feel how tacky the waffle sole's rubber compound is, and then riding on flats they are fantastic.
Vans waffle sole skate shoes are the best flat pedal shoes I've ever used.
I wear the Black/neon pink ones..

BACK TO THE FUTURE!!! come on...well my friend picked up a pair from...council cleanup haha

warning: do not go faster than the speed of light or the shoes may disentigrate....

the guy at my bike shop said a soft one is better so you can really feel it if your foot is like not on the pedal properly. he said with hard soles you cant really tell, and so your more likely to like slip off it
guess thats more for fr/dh than anything that involves a lot of pedalling though.
