Hey do you think is better for jumping A full face or a regular dirt/street helmet. I know saftey is Important but full face helments are heavier and block some of your view.
Dirt Jumping is cooler in open-face.
Regular for me, IMO there is not AS much need for a full face as most the injuries are arms and legs - having said that i'll probably get farked up this weekend...

i like to wear a fullface on some jumps because it gives me confidence to have a go. i think that people should wear fullface helmets on big jumps where you could hit your head with big impact. but open face does feel better.

i don't think full faces are necessary for most types of riding, even some dh trails.

i depends what sort of jumps your doing, if they're big distance jumps then maybe use a full face but for smaller stuff and high kicky rythms, if you use a full face it flops around too much and is too heavy.
full faces have advantages and disadvantages in dirt jumping!!! With a full face you can somtimes have difficulty seein the downramp while in the air..."talking from personal experience" While they cause you more crashes they also protect you...
i have a soloution to this an open face helmet...

This is what should be used for dirt jumping..Probably you should use a 661 dirtlid or mullet are awsome!!!

I'd say No to the fullface helmet for jumping. You rarely smack your face when you're out jumping. I've never hurt anything face related while riding jumps, so i prefer an open face. I'm looking at a 661 Mullet since they have plenty of protection round the back of the head where you're more likely to hit.
Don't buy a fool face helmet for jumping, just cushion your bad landings with your wrist...

I'm ignorant of the taboos concerning fullface and as of yet have not used one. Therefore I appologise for not being able to comment on the actual question asked, but I ride mostly street (more hucking than tech, which speaks volumes of my low level of ability!!) and I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about me getting a fullface, because I am not too keen on having my jaw reconstructed (and spending 6months of the bike) just so I can be cool!
My Mum is a private nurse for one of Aust.s top maxillo (Basically from the bottom of your nose down) facial surgeons, Doug Thornton. I get to hear all the horror stories of people who wanted to be hard and ride open face. Let me tell ya, they aint to hard when they come into the emergency unit of Westmead SCREAMING through a mass of smashed teeth, torn facial tissue, broken bone and clotted blood!!!
Full face may obsure a bit of vision, but it also obscures hard concrete and stairs. BTW, the dude that got airlifted from Red Hill the other week was wearing a a basic everyday helmet, did he get any facial injuries or would anything be different for him now if was wearing F/F? Can anyone elaborate?

I was just wondering what those giro switchblades are like, the really light duty full facers.

i cant stand it. too big blocks vision. for dh i will only wear one. but for dirt jumping only an xc one. the size of the jumps im doing only need one as well. sure it might be a good idea to wear one. but i can see more crashes resulting from wearing one.

..Not to mention recieving a brain injury and spending the rest of your life off a bike  The smallest of head knocks can cause the most serious brain injuries and/or death, not worth the risk IMO. I've only just bought a full face and wear it just about everywhere, I don't care what I look like. I think if you feel the slightest inkling that you might need one, use it.

It was my mate who was airlifted from red hill. A full face would have probably been a good thing for that particular stack, as he hit his head aroud the cheek, eye socket, and most of all his temple.
Don't buy a fool face
Thats full face for those who can spell - unless you were trying to imply something...

i wear a full face DJ and I haven't had any problems with lack of view or anything.......... Mabye it depends on the brand, cos my helmet has pretty much full range of vision cos its designed that way. Sure it gets hot and sweaty, but its well worth it in case u crash. You dont really notice it anyway -> I once stopped for a drink and tried to drink through my helmet! Its also a snug fit so mabye that helps to stop it wobbling, if ur buying one mabye you could make sure you get on that fits your head.

open-face for me. it was strange though converting to that from heavy motorbike helmets. even now a open-face still doesn't feel safe to me.

I never have my full face with me when I ride (unless I'm racing or have something already planned) so I do everything in my open face... I don't come off that regularly (NO KARMA PLEASE!)

It is more comfortable to jump with an open helmet on and its more enjoyable when ur gettin some big air allthough, i came of a big one and face planted with an open helmet.
Put it this way, i couldnt exaclty put some tune on any girls i met for about 4 months. I ripped half my face of to the point were there was just bloody raw meat pissing blood out like a waterfall and for the first week i was constantly dabbing puss as the wounds dried up. Yuk, i'm glad thats over.
NOT PRETTY.
full face it is. thats if u want to keep ur face at least a bit attractive!
I prefer full face for any sort of jumps, never know what can happen... better safe than sorry I guess. The only time I think I'd wear a normal lid is perhaps during city rides or just when I am cruizing along.
I don't know about the visibility issues that some of you have, I don't have any problem seeing what's in-front, above, to the sides or below me.
Suit yourself I guess...

Why is city riding different?
Concrete is harder and steps have pretty aggresive edges on them! A nose case on a stair gap (something I'm completely capable of!) or running out in front of a car scares me more than face planting in the dirt!
As you said though, each to their own in the end.

i way prefer a regular helmet but if u feel more safe/comfortable with a full face on, theres nothin wrong with that

Why is it different, well it's maily because I don't do the stair gaps or stuff like that. I just ride around and try to look good,. However if I ever get better at city riding then I definately would prefer to have a full face for the 'big hits'.

All due respect Dave, but you're f**kin' kiddin', right? I agree helmet choice is personal, and I don't always were my full face. But if you are trying something at your personal limit and it doesn't come off, wouldn't you rather bounce the scone in a full wrap rather than a XC lid? :)

i have a limar F105 and the protect most of your temple  your mate should invest in one.
i use my open face for everything except when i race
it was strange though converting to that from heavy motorbike helmets. even now a open-face still doesn't feel safe to me.
I understand that sentiment... I ride gentle terrain with an open face, but if im pushing it i want a little more protection. I have smashed the back of an open face b4 doing dh... i realised how much damage could have been done if i landed the other way up..
when i jump, FF is the way to go... It may restrict vision a bit, but the greater protection gives the added confidence to hit them faster.. making them easier to clear..
anyway, thats MHO.
