I need a new front brake, my hayes mechanical is just losing it. I like hayes, Hope and Avid. Are there any other good brands for my hardtail, they need to be suitable for freeride and downhill? How many calipers should I get, 2 or 4?

Ahh...why would you quote yourself...Seeing that you are a fairly well built guy i would probably go Hayes...they are awsome and stop you soo easily...every thought of Magura???

Yeah, hayes are good but get the 'mags' though - not the 'hfx9's'.
But there are ALOT of brakes out there (most of which have been mentioned already) so i suggest you try and hook up a ride on as many as you can so you can feel the difference between them all because they are all really quite different.

Also - what is your budget cos you can spend from $100 - $1000 on different brakes...

if you want cheap dont walk past the armour/dice whiplash hydros. they are awesome brakes. dont be convinced they are cheap and shit. they dont feel as nice as say hope or xts but they still work as good and pull you up bloody excellently. get some.

your frame wont have anything to do with your front brake.

We know you want a DH and FR brake, so your only limiting factor is price, we need a price range.

Go a set of Shimano Deores in the Manitou post style mount. This way you can just run a 8" rotor using a Hayes adaptor. Unless you're a weight weenie who cares about the 2 extra bolts, this is the safest option if you want compatability and practability. Who would've thought Shimano had some products in their line-up left with these :P

ps... Hope rocks!
