seeing as most other sources get their forecast from the BOM yeh, they must be shit
if yo uread a detailed forecast you will find it the best. Radar is good, use the satelite imegry to predict coming weather (if you know how).
There are many tutorials on the site on how to read different maps and what they mean etc.

The Bom site is alot more than a day to day forecast. People rely on it for boating and aviating conditions, updates, warnings etc. Where do you think airfields and yacht clubs get their info from?

Where do you think airfields and yacht clubs get their info from?

Most major airfields have their own MET station. Most big yachts have their own weather systems aswell.

Simo
12-08-2004, 09:15 PM
so regional (and unmanned) airfields can afford/support weather systems?
Do you even know anything about yachts? The only yachts that have their own weather systems are those that race open ocean (ie volvo ocean race).
some yacht clubs can afford a central weather station but very few have the ability to opperate/afford one.

You are aware that 99% of "other" sources just get their info from the BoM?

And IMO they're pretty close to being totally accurate, about 90% of the time. As far as "shitest thing eva made!!", can you do better? Or anyone else for that matter? Didn't think so.

sooo early  But yeah i can do better then BOm JUST LOOK AT THE DARN SKY! all youll ever need to know!!!

as for BOM Friday
Cloudy with rain periods developing during the morning. The chance of a
thunderstorm later. Fresh and gusty north to northwesterly wind.

Yesterday note YESTERDAY this was: chance of rain in moring > FINE!

THEY CHANGE IT WHEN THE BLOODY FORCAST ACTULY COMES!

If ANYONE could predict the weather accuratley they would be a millionare.

As for the BOM people want a one-liner that says what the weather will be like. It is just not that simple, so they get as close as they can. Of course the forcast is going to change as the weather changes. I am sure thay could give a 1000 word forcast saying "if this then ...". But that would require looking out the window instead of at a computer screen

Berfore racing on Sydney Harbour (sailing) we use a combination of the local knowledge, gut instinct/experience, BOM current observations, and BOM forecast (in that order).

LOL

Before we go sailing (420) or 50foot ocean racer we look at BOM and rule out what ever it says

Then we look at the sky, humidety and we can acuretly prodict the weather for 3days never set as wrong 8)

Where do you race out of melbourne and what "50 footer" are you on? What crew position are you?

IceFire> headsail > trimmer/taction

i use to sail on beyond outrages and galaxy > and both again on headsail

cool cool. Just thought you were a 12 year old kid trying to sounds edumacted
Personally I get random crewing spots as forward deck and regularly crew on a thompson 7 on the headsail.

Don't see how people can have a stab at the BOM for updating reports. It's like having a go at farkin for updating the news section, it's done to give you the best, most relevant info. Yes, it can be wrong but I kighly doubt that any who have compained are qualified meterologist's.
If you don't like the one liner forecasts either
a. don't bitch
or b. look at satelite imegry, wind info, atmopheric conditions etc and elarn to interpet them yourself.

Hey, you two were supposed to fight

On topic, predicting the future must have become much harder since the weather patterns have been affected by global warming/cyclic patterns, whichever it may be. I don't sail or pay much attention to it, so I hope I'm not dribbling shit. Is there a difference in predictive accuracy from 10 years ago?

Bobo

then a fine day with sunny
periods and light wind. A risk of overnight snow about the nearby hills.

Who wants to have a bet to see if they got it right for sunday :P

No Idea. Ten years ago I remember it being very windy and getting my arse blown all over middle harbour. Come to think of it, last season I remember it being vety windy and getting my arse blown all around the harbour .

Apparently the "old timers" in the open boats (from around the beginning of the 20th Century) were very good at predicting the weather. They needed to be to know how many crew to take out depending on wind strenght, it could be the difference between eating serious shit or completing a race. (yes I have just written a thesis on this so forgive my ramblings)

Refer to my earlier post. There are alot of variables. Reducing these to two sentences is not easy. The best thing to do is to combine current observations with the forcast, interpret these using a combination of local knowledge and experience of what the weather does. Then you can predict what might happen in the immediate future.

My entire knowledge of weather forecasting pretty much consists primarily of this fact I picked up whilst reading the newspaper - the 'official' (I'm assuming BOM) weather outlook was increased by one day in recent years.
