Whilst I was out riding through my local trails this afternoon I had my first encounter with a trap set for riders.
The trail was really narrow and there was a bush on one side, someone had dug a hole in the ground and found a really big stick, which they placed in the hole and leant on the bush. It stuck out to around 5"4, and it was aimed directly in the middle of the trail, and it was at a section of trail that was nearly impossible to avoid. If I wasn't wearing sunglasses, I probably wouldn't have much sight left in my right eye. As it stands, the stick scraped along the side of my face and dug into my ear.
I know there was another thread made about this, and I'm just repeating the mesage that protection while riding is a must. It really sucks that someone would stoop to that low a level, even more so seeing that alot of people ride without helmets or sunnies where I ride.

Yikes, are u alright roffle?
Stupid trap setters....fucking pricks they are :x
Well i'll be more alert for these kind of things when i'm on the trail now.....
Perhaps they are actually waiting near the trap and wanted the next rider to be knocked unconscious. After this they would nick off with your bike and leave you there. (just thinking about it from a trappers point of view, the best way to know their intentions is to "be" that person and try to think how they would think) Oh mind u...it wasn't me.

at pennant hills park there always seems to be logs and trees layed across trails!!! dont think all of them are intentionally layed but some for sure. it realy pisses me off because we have to stop and move it for others and it is just as much of a bother stoping getting of ur bike and walking around!!! :x

Yeah I'm fine, just a gash in my ear. I was really lucky that I was wearing sunnies, lucky aswell that I always carry my trusty tissues. I was really shocked by it though, the mentality of a person who would set a trap with the intention to harm someone else..

u can get the police involved. if theres a series of traps being set, report them each time they happen as it can lead to them investigated it further

This is the first time I have actually seen a trap, so as for now I'm just counting it as my bad luck. If it continues to happen I'll certainly tell the police that traps are being set up. I don't think the police would have much of a chance catching whoever it is though, alot of people use Glenrock..

yeh thats why i always walk up the track firest and check its alright(we have to push up everywhere in canbera) and we have just had logs as such. We cant really talk to the police because the tracks are on mt anslie which is illegal to ride on because the walkers had a cry and got us banned. it really sucks.

I'm really interested to know what types of people are setting these traps - greenies, sadists, what?
**opens it to speculation**

Seriously, i'm interested in hearing people's thoughts.

If its some sought of greenie/conservative bushwalker etc. types I just can't get over how deluded and narrow minded these people must be. I mean its pretty fucken stupid not to realise the immensely serious and harmful consequences of this behaviour.

I really would like to talk with someone like I mentioned above.

(I would also like to blindfold them and push them down one of the their booby trapped trails in a shopping trolley, but that's another matter...)

I consider myself a greenie, but farked if I'd do anything like that, probably be too stupid and just get myslef anyway......

At first guess I'd say stupid kids, who knows? Has ANYONE actually CAUGHT some one or HAVE been involved in the arrest of some one for this crime? Or are we really just guessing that it's old people, greenies and kids?

2 *Edits for stupid spelling

yeh down my local tracks te so called greenies have been known to do such things. They were seen doing it multiple times, or seen entering the area, then after they left the traps were set up.

My solution is the home made landmin, i am going to implement these on some local tracks, show these people what a REAL trap is....though the dangr of bushfire is bad using my design...so hmmmmmm

anyway.

First we had the fool's Jihad and George bush. Well lookout! Now there's fundementalist greenies too!!

Imagine if a kid of 8yrs necked himself on a track, don't these people have kids of their own? I can understand childhood stupidity but it's attempted muder for an adult! If you can prove that some ones doing it somehow, get them sorted.

I dunno if anyone remembers a few years back a moto rider was killed by someone setting traps. These guys were riding in some state forest and this stupid local dick goes and ties wire in between trees on the track.
Next ride there one of the guys coathangers himself and loses his head.

Really good way to deal with things.....

one of my friends was riding one of his trails when some (Mod edit - Grip) ONE (mod edit) tied a green vine across the track about neck hight. he went straight into it and when he came ova the next day, he had this big red line strait across his neck.

There was a guy arrested and went to jail for booby trapping trails in America (or it was possibly Mexico).

A rider hit his wire across the track, took chunks out of his bicep muscles, and chest.

If it is walkers doing it - there have been several scientific studies completed that conclude there is EQUAL damage done by walkers, as by cyclists.

I personally just cannot believe the mentality of a person who would do this sort of thing. Atrocious.

I have people trying to kill me everyday, no biggy.

It you spend enough time on the trials you will no doubt encounter the people that are doing this. If they are digging a big hole in your track, make some use of it, Put them in it. Problem solved.

Sorry guys but if i caught someone doing that.. Im gonna bash them. Old young whatever as thats just the most S**tful thing in the world to do.
I have respect for other people that use the trails but woe be the walker i catch doing that!!.

I got nailed a few years back on my Motorbike they had put strong fishing line across the track, i saw it at the last second and it caught up under my visor ripped my head back and i nearly fell off the bike if i hadnt seen it i would have ridden into it at neck height. Lucky for me i wasnt going all that fast.

yeah setting traps is one of the lowest acts you can do ---> i copped a hail bail bolted onto the downramp with starposts on a jump on my dh track, there is nothing better though after fully recovering your broken ankle and gettin the stitches out only to have it happen again.....

cause i see the old [edited word] trying to make traps. ie: random poles, logs and the worst so far a horizontal stick between 2 trees at head height being made. not to mention the abuse u get from em..... there just the bad ones thoy there are some awsome oldies out there

Regardless of how much damage a mountainbike or motorbike might do to the environment, it is not worth someones life.

Do people who booby trap trails really know the conequences of what they are doing? would they murder someone in person just because they saw them riding on a trail? I don't think they would. Cowards.

In this case I'm pretty sure it's not elderly people, as I rarely see them walking through. I'm almost positive it would be some of the younger riders, a bunch of them stole around $200 worth of stuff from a fire truck while there was a fire blazing..
The cops know this much, I still havn't told them of the traps yet. Some good news is that a few of them got fined for riding without a helmet, however much closure this gives me.

There is an old folks home nearby..

Duuuude, this thread was made in 2004. That's 4 years ago, you really don't need to bring this topic back up.

Categorising the saboteurs as greenies, oldies and others groups is unproductive. Any person who intentionally increases the danger and risk of injuries to mountain bikers is a ............... . All types of people will do this, they may be tall, short, fat ,,,,, this is the same way as grouping as suggesting greenies.
Forget what we emotionally want to do to them - they are ignorant of the potential life endangering damage they may inflict.
Do not bash them if you catch them. Simply put them on a mountain bike and get them to ride at 50 kph into a wire across the track at head height. As a reference to this get the classic Australian movie Stone. (an absolute must see!)

How do the newbies find all the old threads?! Just check the last post date next time, and also check to see if what you want to say is valid, if its informative or if the thread topic has become relevant again, go nuts. If not just let it die :)

Well seeing as this was Epic-lly dug i might as well add my oppinion to it.

Yes the traps are bad but people building jumps are just as bad, just today i went riding came out of a corner thinking it was the same as the other day and it turned out to be a 2-3 meter double.
