Does anyone know where i can get one of those bike racks that fit just two bikes (maybe three if get a bigger one) using the crank arm that slots in a steel tube, with one side cut out so you dont have to take out pedals.
I think shmitty posted a photo of his one.

Hope that made sense...

Cheers

Does anybody here have a roof rack for bikes? I am thinking of getting one but I have no idea about the cost... How many bikes could it roughly hold?

We use Thule roof racks, three bikes on at once but you could probably fit 4 if you breathed in!

Grommet's right re the price. A good set up for 3 bikes cost us over $600 about 5 years ago. Great for XC and family bikes... not the easiest things to use at all for DH and XC bikes though.

There has been a thread on ROOF RACKS before. Try the search function.

You can get roofracks that are held on by a clamp onto your frame.... or you can get a STABLE pair that you have to take the front wheel off with or without disc brakes (THULE are the best)

NOT roof racks.

If you want info on roof racks use the search button!!!!!!!!!!!

you can also buy gripsport racks here (http://bikefanatic.com/shop/index.php/cPath/77?PHPSESSID=1a6a8ffc5b61242852c5d5a87b271755) but it's probably better to go direct from grip.

OK now this is a bit tricky because I have a vested interest in this subject... but I also happen to know a little bit about it.

We've been asked HEAPS of times about making 3 & 4 bike versions of our towbar carrier but the bottom-line is we don't do more than TWO for the simple reason that the figures don't add up.

We did the maths on the average load rating of towbars Vs the dead weight AND levered weight (bouncing) of 2 and 3 "heavy" bikes (such as DH and Jump beasts) and decided there was NO way we would want people putting more than two "heavy" bikes on this style of towbar carrier. Just imagine the carnage (to your bikes AND anyone following along the highway) if it all just came off in one great lump of metal?

Thule make fantastic products. As I mentioned above our family Holden has their roof racks and they're brilliant. But their towbar carrier really isn't designed for "heavy" bikes so much as lighter "family" and XC rigs. For one thing, looking at the spacing between bikes I doubt you'd fit the big bikes in there anyway.

And yes, I've seen homemede 3 & 4 bike carriers hanging off the back of cars etc at races etc but I'm not prepared to accept that as evidence that "it's okay".... because that's really only evidence that it's okay in THAT particular set of circumstances... so far!

As far as I'm concerned the figures don't lie.
