no idea where in melbourne.........most guitar/music shops should have one in stock. They range, for a decent sounding one, from about $699. I would spend at least a grand though.

You should be able to find one around the $500 mark, maybe even $450. But as road warrior mentioned, it'll be pretty basic, but probably enough if you're just starting out.

Yeh billy hydes 'should' have a few bass guitars. The ones in sydney mainly have drum kits and that but you should be alright.

I should enforce spending the extra cash, with a normal bass it is ok, you can mess with the pick ups and the action of the bridge to get a decent sound, but like any acoustic style guitar the action is the most important thing (to get the most out of the acoustics). Don't base your opinions on price, test every guitar you see to get a feel for them, but if it comes down to money always go the extra mile.

Billy Hyde's has quiet a few Basses, but I cant say I remember seeing any acoustic basses in their Flemington store, although I cant say I was looking, this would have been a few months ago though. Best ring and ask, the guys there are pretty cool.

My dad has been known to make the odd acoustic bass, have a look on his website: www.giletguitars.com.au

Check out 'guitars plus' in sandringham. I bought an axe from them, and noticed they didnt sell the 'same old' kind of gear - worth a look...

As for price, generally anything under the $1300 mark will be a fairly average instrument (especially accoustic because the quality of them is more reliant on the build quality). But that depends on your use.

Buyer beware - shop around

yeah, but if i was buying a bass, i wouldn,t buy it there...
They sell lots of mass produced new gear, not many instruments there that are really any good - IMO

THeRE are cool people working there though - they let you pull an axe of the wall and go bonkas in a room stacked full of amps!!! :P
