View Full Version : Metallica is Spinal Tap

I saw the Metallica documentary last night at Cinema Nova.

For those who don't know it's called Some Kind of Monster. The documentary crew followed Metallica for the better part of 2001-2003, as they recorded their album St. Anger, fought bitterly, and sought the counsel of their on-call shrink, Dr. Phil.

A thoroughly entertaining film in many ways. The Audience were laughing their heads off through the whole film. Strangely, while the film made the members of the band look like total dickheads, I came out of the cinema wanting to get of some of their old records.

The parallels with Spinal Tap are astounding (as if releasing a "black" album wasn't enough).

Recommended.

No that's some funny shite right there goddamnit

But, give me any album before and including justice, and I'll give you intelligent metal. Master of puppets, what an album!

Little OT, has anyone seen "A mighty wind"? It's the same blokes that did Spinal Tap, but this time they're taking the piss out of the folk music genre. Funny stuff. Also, Comic Strip, a'la the Young Ones, did an episode called "Bad News Tour", just as funny and the same idea as Spinal Tap!

Have to admit, I burned Master, Lighting, Kill em all, and about about a third of justice onto my impresssionable young brain as a teenager... Great records - but "intelligent" may be taking it a bit far

Ditto here. I still enjoy a good bit of Justice on a regular basis. I cringe at the sound of their Black and beyond garbage.

Intelligent? I say yes. Check out "Eye of the Beholder", "One", "And Justice for All", "Disposable Heroes", "Lepar Messiah" and tell me that's not good intelligent writing. Then check out "Enter Sandman", "Of Wolf and Man", "Fuel" and tell me that's not absolute trailer trash. I have no respect for this band anymore. I still get upset about it. As a big fan who'd seen them twice, it was like being dumped by your girlfriend when they went from genius to geriatric in one stroke of bullshit. Grrrrrr. :x

Black album still had it's moments, as did songs that followed after it.
My friend of misery, The god that failed, Low man's lyric (reload) and No leaf clover (SnM). All great songs.

I don't know if they compare with songs like Call of khtulu, creeping death or (welcome home) sanitarium, but they are certainly good songs. Personally I think No leaf clover is one of their best songs. Both lyrically and melodically. Definately in my top 5 of Metallica songs.

This is one band that had it, then lost it. Badly.

After Master of Puppets, it all went downhill very quickly.

I put them in the same catagory as KISS nowadays. Just corporate, money-making rock. A joke.

But alas... that's what success does to some bands.

I hear they're going to do acoustic versions of all their songs (using edited for TV lyrics), with a symphony, on Rove Live, while selling their new line of designer gold watches.

ahh yes i have been a Metallica fan for a large part of my short life compared to most your you (me being only 18) i have seen the band twice also....

i also agree it seems metallica lost their creativity / will to write good music which other metal bands aspired to and just sold out to MTV

i was very impressed at the last concert to see them play all the old stuff minus the two songs off saint anger and a few of black...

anyway metallica will never be the same i like to think of it as once they where young and angry and now they are just old and mellow .....

still OLD metallica is one of my favourite bands and would definately go seem them again next tour (if there is one)

Heh... I remember that quote from Lars Urich in some heavy metal magazine back in the day.

"We will NEVER do a video!"

Wife and I went to see this film.... we both prefer blues to metal (so no bias there) but we both thought it was a really insightful film... and I have to say the band members really came across as thoughtful, smart and committed to what they do. I still don't like metal but I'm certainly now interested in THEM.

Intelligent for me because of the politically charged lyrics such as blackened/master of puppets (the song), Justice (the song) One, disposable heroes etc. And intelligent for the use of classical guitar and other innovations such as the lead in to Damage Inc. I have to say that both Orion and dyers (sp?) eve would have to be thier best songs ever, closely followed by Battery, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Blackened, Sanitarium, .......................... I too spent my years from 13 to 25 imprinting my brain with this stuff, along with AC/DC, Floyd, Zepplin, Beatles, ELO, Iron Maiden, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and so on. Great times, lucky boy to have the opportunity to hear such good stuff (not to mention roof over head etc.)

Sorry mate, but that's just a romour. They're actually in the studios doing a Kylie cover with JayZ providing rap breaks! Corporate slaves to the dollar.........

I'll join the chorus. Seek and Destroy is one of my fave tracks but I won't classify kill em all as intellectual metal.

Certainly, Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are the standouts. Justice has some great points and it all goes to sh** as soon as Bob Rock comes on the scene. As far as the futility of war, anti death penalty, hypocritical religious folk, abuse of mental patients, drugs screwing up your life Puppets and Lightning have so many well written, well thought out and meaningful tracks it's amazing. That's not so say that Creeping Death and Thing That Should Not Be aren't corkers too.

Gee I feel old...

Metallica just aren't what they were in my day...

After Load and Reload, I was really expecting an acoustic album with MTV called Unload. And I think they missed a huge marketing opportunity doing a symphony orchestra album called S&M when they could have called called it "soloed" (S.O. Load)

yeh they have talked heaps about re-using the 'load' franchise.
and James did with his solo album 'loaded'.
To which he followed up with 'rehab'
