for the 1600 you could get an STP 1.

If your limit is 1600 Get the STP 1. You said the only thing you didn't like was the Brakes and Forks. The STP 1 has Z1 Drop offs and Hydros. Think about it
by the look of it the stp1 is pretty much just like the 04 sasquatch, the only main difference is the forks, and i personally would go the drop offs instead of the dirt jumpers, as dirt jumps are heavy and crap, and with the stp2 the frame looks nice, but scratches like a mofo, even resting it against something soft slightly it leaves a ugly mark, I'm not sure how the stp1 frame is, but i like black more, its way more sexy :P
If you want to get into some DH why would you want an STP? The geometry setup is nothing like what you would want for DH. Check out the Norco Shore hardtail lineup.
Mainly the sasquatch which is pretty well specked, or the new Tactik which has the new manitou stance flow forks which feel pretty nice. Sasquatch will give you the 8" Hydraulic Hayes and the Tactik gives you 8" Avid mech discs. Other parts are relatively similar, and both are in your price range.

he also said street/trials.... but yes, a norco ht would be good if you were to go dhing on it, dont know bout street/trials though :?

for every thin he wants to do a sassie is better and dj's are better than dropoff's it can good to be heavy a norco frame is way stronger than a giant

Yeah I understand he wants to do street/trials too, but I just think the sasquatch would be a better all rounder, because the geometry is somewhat in between a dj frame and a dh hardtail frame making it more ideal than just an stp which is ideally only for urban.
Sasquatch is also going to get you from A to B easier.
if you have to choose between kona and giant get a kona there way better frames than giant otherwise get a norco.Giants first year of stp production theres probably going to be a fault so id steer clear and get something your sure will be reliable and can take a hard hit :)

Just setting it strate there not z1 drop off's, there jsut a "Drop Off" there is a big difference between these forks.

Agreed, i was not so much challenging your suggestion but more his request for a 1 bike to do it all, as dh, dj and trials require a certain type of bike for each ie: a trials bike would not exactly blitz a dh run...

i would personaly say one of the main turning points that would make me get a stp is the wheels, rhyno lite XLs on the stp1, and some no brand 'double wall' on the sassie... dirt jumpers and drop-offs apprentaly have the same internals, just DJs come with more stock travel and cromo stanchions...
ah eyah and sidathensgold if you want to get in to some heavy trials like some fairly big drops to backwheel stall thingos..i would steer away from the sassie or the stp because they do not have v-brake bosses. Disc brake mounts do not like back wheel hops that much..

Well at the risk of getting hurt here's my fiddy cents why not a Kona Hoss? They are BEEEF I mean sure they aren't Excellent for street/trials but they aren't too bad and they kick ass DH or so I hear and DJ as well.
