Coopers sparkling, as a matter of fact........I got one right now! *edit, for it's full flavour.
Red back *edit for it's crisp taste.
Belgian style "sherry/cherry" beer. *edit for it's way out super sweet high octane power punch that get's delivered like a sherman tank parked on your chest with every mouthful you consume. If you want a beer that has as much flavour as alcahol content, this is it! I Got extremely drunk on it last time I was in Brussels (by myself). Had the appropriate hangover cure in Amsterdamn the next day 8)
*edit, yes I am drunk.
*edit, vote green

What the hell do you think I was talking about  :? :?:
Anyway, there is also the Heiniken Brewery where I think drinking beer is permitted (not that I went there....how touristy. Now hanging in coffee shops, that's unique and alternative  mmmmm Afghani gold......)

Coopers Sparkling as an everyday beer and Little Creatures for special occasions. Coopers has a real yeast driven ale belt and the Creatures is as smooth as silk.
Thats bought beer anyway. My Cascade "Ghost Ale" home brew is ready for drinking and at only 7 weeks in the bottle it is already one of the best beers I have tasted. Smooth and rounded with a great malty finish.

Had it in the bath, after 11 days in the scrub completing the ATA in Armidale in the middle of winter.
Best beer ever.
finally, someone else who drinks redbacks! i also like stella, new, coldies, tooheys pils and cold shots. oh, and the odd kilkenny or guinness when there's nothing else available.

Ghost ale, what kind of beer is that exactly? What current beers would you equate it with?
After our last chat on beer, I'm quite keen to kick off my own home brew, also get a hold of those aged Coopers! Really starting to get an educated palete concerning the old amber ale. Will have to kick my excercise regime up a notch :D

Best beer is Heineken. Yes I am a slave to consumerism. I also had this weird import beer (forget the name, but its dutch - WE RULE!) after baseball when we have our drinking session and talk about how we got raped dry without lube. It was really good, too bad I don't know the name.

Ah yes, that would be Schoffer Hoffoer (two dots over the O in Schoffer) an Austrian cloudy wheat beer with 5,0% alkeehole. I tried it tonight at Una's (Austrian restaraunt in Sydney). I had to laugh when I saw it, "hey! that's the beer that Ajay was talking about.......I'll have a Schoffer Hoffeor please".
Not bad, Light, cloudy and maybe even a bit "fruity", but definately fantastic with paprika chicken and rosti! I agree that it was definately paletable, but next to a Coopers or Red Back ( AustraLIAN wheat beer)..........a paltry second best.
Beez Neez. Ooohhhhh yes, any thing with honey in it deserves a blood sacrifice! I have actually been pursuing my honey addiction quite actively, but may need some Farkiners help to take it too the next level. Mead, the "ye olde English brew" was made from a honey base and I'm dieing to try it, but try finding this stuff anywhere in Sydney! I know it's available, but you try and track down a supplier......I believe as Mia Wallace would say, it is an "excercise in futility"!
If anyone can track down a supplier, I offer a beer (or six) my shout (offer only applies to residents of the Sydney metropolitan district. See terms and conditions for details).
Yes, I am drunk.

I agree, heiniken = no flavour!
Heineken does have a flavour, it tastes like heineken
Perhaps I was being harsh on Carlton Draught but this one time (at band camp), I ordered an almighty RESCHS & the poor misguided soul of a bar tender gave me a carlton. 1/2 an hour later when the convulsions had stopped & I had cleansed my body of the foul ale (by drinking more RESCHS) I swore never to touch the noxious drop again. :D

Ewwwwwwww... Silver bullets *shudders*
If you have to drink beer, Ted's.
But Canadian Club and cola.
Spirits over beer :D
Carlton Draught is without a doubt the worst beer ever created by human hands. I would rather inject human faeces into my eyeball than drink it ever again. Corona is kind of like real beer, only made for girls, if you need to put a lemon in it to be able to stomach it, it's not a good beer.
Onto the good stuff:
Coopers Pale and Coopers Sparkling are both fantastic from the bottle and are damn close to perfection (in my books) off the tap. Pikes Oakbank Lager is another personal favourite of mine which also happens to come from South Australia, though not many bottle shops here in Brisbane stock it. (Good beer, good riding, good hip hop and decriminalised pot, if Adelaide wasn't so shit-boring I'd move there in a second ;) )
I had my first Reschs just this past weekend and it was nowhere near as vile as my friends from Lismore built it up to be, actually quite drinkable but a bit on the watery / tasteless side of things for my liking. I drank the Real Bitter but I understand there are a few varieties of it out there.
As far as imported beer goes my current favourite is Stella Artois. Crack one of those puppies, whack on a goofy smile and say "git" and "twat" alot and you'll feel just like a slower and less talented Steve Peat.
Last but not least, XXXX Bitter and VB are first and second choices for "cheap, domestic, I just want to get slaughtered" beers. VB is a lot closer to being a real bitter than XXXX in my books, but one-eyed patriotism demands that XXXX occupies my top spot.

Sorry dude but 222 and sugar do not contribute to hangovers. Neither does mixing drinks or any of that kind of stuff.
Hangovers: Ethanol is the form of alcahol that we drink, enzymes in our digestive system brake ethanol down into formaldehyde and methanol. Methanol is poisonous to humans so if we get too much in our system at once, our body attempts to purge itself of it. This is why we can vomit if we drink too much or drink too fast. Formaldehyde is less poisonous and is excreted through the urine, but formaldehyde is also a diuretic. This means that it drags fluid/water out with it (probably a process via the kidneys ie: kidneys force fluid into the bladder to make you piss therefore purging the body of formaldehyde. Bit of a guess on that one tho). This is how we come to be dehydrated/hungover. There is also another part of hangovers, the missed sleep, the diet of chips and dodgy kebabs, cigarette smoke both first and second hand, but the largest non-intake contributor to hangovers is missing you regular sleep pattern. One night on the turps, not getting to sleep until 7am and then waking up at 3pm is akin to international flights and jetlag via altering your circadian rhythm (this is a job done by the suprachiasmatic nucleus found atop of the brainstem, it regulates our sleeping patern). Drink a large amount of water either during pub visits or before you hit the sack and you will negate at least 85% of the hangover feeling. Sometimes a pre-bedsybies berocca can help as well! BTW, if 222 gave you hangovers you'd wake up with a sore head from drinking fruit juice and many other food stuffs where it may be found!
Another urban myth is that beer bellies come from "what we eat when we are drunk" as in nuts, chips, kebabs, pizza, McshitballDonalds etc. WRONG! Beer, spirits and most mixers have a very high sugar content, if this energy input is not balanced out by energy output ie: excercise, your pancreas will release insulin which will turn any excess energy (glycogen) into energy reserves, FAT! Also, alcahol itself has 8 calories per gram, that's really high considering that protien has only for calories per gram! Once again, if you don't burn this off, you will store it as fat. Bottom line, alcahol is highly fattening!
Ryan challenged himself with:
Carlton Draught is without a doubt the worst beer ever created by human hands. I would rather inject human faeces into my eyeball than drink it ever again.
So does that mean if I come around with a case of Carlton and a syringe full of poo..................

I used to drink four litres of Orange/passionfruit juice a day (until I realised that "fruit" sugar is really no different than refined cane sugar), added to my frosty fruit addiction I think that would qualify as "copious".
No hangovers there!

The best thing about Little Creatures is they have dog water bowls out the front of the brewery so your dog can have a drink to! Oh the beer isn't to bad either. After you've done that go to the Sail and Anchor and order one of their 6 pack specials, (6 flavours of beers) go back to Little Creatures have one of each flavour again head down to Ciccerallos and buy fish and chips then try and drive home

I also found it hard to get ahold of at bottle shops ... but I recently found my local grape sells it by the bottle .. $4 each .. which really isnt that bad considering it's actually 2.2 Standard drinks. I can't believe no-one's mentioned Little Creatures Pale Ale. That stuff is just the finest beer in the country!
If the sail and anchor of which you speak is the one in Freemantle, that's where I tried my first Red Back on tap. As a matter of fact, it's the only place I've ever had it on tap!
Ah the hazy memories
It has not been available for a while, but KB was great - anyone remember the gold can of KB?
I never got to try it, but every time I see Reg Regan (sydney charactor parody) with one it brings back all those childhood memories of collecting cans for cash! If I remember correctly, they had a dimpled can that was rather thin, is that correct?

Those in sydney should head to the belgian beer cafes. One in sydney, the other in the rocks. They have a choice of about 30 different beers from belgium. It's a bit pricey but alot of the beershave alcohol content's above 10% so that helps to offset the cost a little bit.
I suggest you go to the one in the rocks the bar is much less cramped and very cool.

That's the one - I remember it as a sort of crinkly metal, and I do believe it was the first beer my dad ever gave me, when we were out fishing somewhere, ahh the days.

Munchen all the way!!
I havent actually tasted this stuff but....
A few days ago i was at this wholesale bottle store with my dad. They had in the back corner a few 6s of Munchen with this giant 1 litre glass above it, just like the ones from Octoberfest. I went up to the counter and asked how much the glass was by itself. The cashier lady went out to the manager came back and said i could have it for free!!!!! Yay!! :D :D
I think it might have something to do with my dad spending $200+ that day. :P

If you ever go to the Rocks Belgian Cafe and there is a guy sitting in a corner drinking a deep reddy coloured beer with a serene almost whimsical grin on his dial......that would be me.
You may remember in a few previous posts I mentioned my big night in Brussels suckin on a cherry/sherry beer. Well the BBCafe is the only place I have found that beer since. That night by myself in Brussels holds one of the happiest memories of my life (had just come from a forced 8days in New York.....yyyeeeecscsccchhhh :x from zero culture to absolute culture!) and each time I swill this beer, it takes me back again................................... :) :D 8)

Time to ressurect this old thread, no-one else is on at this time of day.
This thread poses one of the eternal questions, and I am on a mission in europe at the moment to answer it. I am compiling a spreadsheet of all the different beers I have tried, that I have proof of such as the bottle etc, and also of the tap beers.
So far I only have 286 bottled beers on the list and about 80 on the draught list. So I'm in the UK now doing vast research. I have just come back from Belgium and owing to the interest in previous posts I will tell you that Belgian beer is indeed exceptional. In England where I live there are many beer festivals on at the moment where you can get "Real Ale". Something we lack in Australia.
For Example:
Timothy Taylors Landlord, Thomas Hardy's Ale, Spitfire, Brewers Gold,
Innes & Gunn, Deuchars.(I know the last two are Scottish)
Before anyone gets their back up, I do like Aussie beer too. Some of the favourites are:
Boags Honey Porter, Coopers Sparkling, Little Creatures.
Belgium:
Deus, Kwak, Gulden Draak, Gouden Carolus, St Bernards Abt12. There are far too many to name.
No Stella you may say? Stella is the devils work, especially the crap they brew here in England. Although alot of lager is the devils work.
Germany;
Warsteiner, Schneider Aventinus.
I could go on for days, it's a subject I think we all feel very deeply about, so well worth the effort.
The key is kids, try as many as you can! There is sooooooo much more than the awful top pressure crap you find in most pubs. Look a little further.
I think this mission of mine will take about 7years 9months and 14days, to complete Europe. Everyone should have a goal.
All that effort, I need a beer. I think it'll be an Old Peculier.
Cheers.

As long as it gets me drunk then it's a good beer imo! :p
Seriously though, i have a thing for Coopers Sparkling Ale, it is definitely one of my favourites. Or then any number of German/Belgian beers simply because of their purity laws!
And this Finnish one is ok too.

Karhu is ok, tis a bit like VB in Australia though. I like Lapin Kulta the most out of all the regulars.
Drinking here is only expensive when you are in a bar or a club, otherwise it's hella cheap when you buy from the supermarket!!! You can get a sixpack for 5 something euros!
Drinking is a bit of a national sport here, never have i ever seen so many people in as bad shape as i have seen on the streets of Helsinki!! It's like Melbourne Cup day every weekend! And during midsummer festival time the nations leading cause of death is alcohol related drowning. People go out on their boats to their summer cottages, get shitfaced, fall into the water and drown. One weekend last year 18 or so people died that way!
And i've never seen so many people wearing these things either. (resulting from drunken falls)

Whilst you're there check out Monty Python's Holy Ale (made from real witches) It tastes ace and comes in a really cool bottle.
Also you should go to the other end of the spectrum and check out the wino fuel such as Carlsberg Special Brew, Tennents Super and Scotland's second national drink, Buckfast (technically a dodgy wine but lethal nonetheless)
For the Record My handle probably gives the game away as to my personal favourite but can I also mention the following:
Guinness (not the Nigerian stuff though-pure lolly water)
Kronenbourg Grand Cru
Rubbel Sexy Lager (cool bottle as well)
But the best beer I ever did had would of been a glass of Castle Lager in the Continental Hotel, Luanda, Angola.
I'd been stuck on a drilling rig in mega tropical heat for the previous six and a half weeks and I'd worked up a hell of a thirst by the time we got back on the beach!

In the South of Germany their is a micro Brewery (there is heaps of them!)
That I have stayed at twice now, once in 2000, then again this year.
Awesome beer! In Germany they have the purity laws, alowing only select ingredients in their beer BY LAW. No sugar.
1litre stein's from
Brauerei Pfister in Weigelshofen:D
There has to be sugars (or grain which contain sugars) in beer. The yeast feeds on the sugars in the wert and, as a by product, produces alcohol.
It has not been available for a while, but KB was great - anyone remember the gold can of KB?
See the boys down at the Bull n Bush, I am sure they can get you a carton in. If not there let me know and I'll find out where the lads are getting it from.
yes its still in production, yes it still tastes like wee.
Fav B33R : Guinness, "like Angels crying on my tongue". Drunk far to much of it while living in Ireland. Doesnt travel well though.
Fav Local B33R: Coopers Pale Ale, a lovely drop.
Fav EveryDay B33R: Tooheys New.
Fav B33R from Munich: franziskaner, the brewery is in Munich. This beer is fantastic. Was "blowing bubbles" many a night after destroying a few of these. :D

It is the Hops that is the trick. A lot of german beer steins (http://www.german-toasting-glasses.com/images/g5734.jpg) have a hops bud on the handle by the way. I wondered what it was for a while before I was told:o

Coopers is a good effort, if you want strength and very high quality try:
Gulden Draak 10.5%
Black Death 12%
Bush Amber 12%
DeuS 11.5% (Very expensive and like champagne)
Thomas Hardy's Ale 11.7% (Bottle conditioned and can be cellared for up to 25 years!)
Piraat 10%
And if you are a raging alcoholic:
Tennents Super (the purple bastard) 9%
Carlsberg Special Brew 9%
Skol Super 9%
Try everything, don't get stuck with the same one! There are sooooooo many beers and so little time.

I had a really good beer last night called Tuborg. From memory it was from Belgium? Very neutral tasting with a slight spicy/citrus taste at the end.. The best part about it was a six pack cost me $13 which is the same as Carlton Draught! SCORE!
I think the best advice so far is dont get stuck drinking only one beer. A good idea is to consider buying a couple of six packs of "premium" beer instead of a slab of VB or whatever cheap and nasty domestic poison you normally fancy :p
Other beers I like:
- Tooheys Pils
- Coopers Sparkling
- James Boags
- Goat Beer

If you are going back to Belgium or France I'd like to direct you to a place that makes the best beer I've ever tasted and it comes from a rather unique place.
I will check with Nicho on the specifics if need be, but the place was called Lille and was about 40 mins from the border (French side of Belgium) It was an old Burlesque house/dancing girl joint that had been restored and made into a restaraunt. I don't know how they did it, but the beer came straight out of the vat, through the cooling system and out the tap. I had the blonde and the ale. Keep the ale, but the blonde.......aaarrrglerlglrlrglrlg! I've never had a beer taste so fresh, crisp, clean and any other cliche'd term. It was truly the best beer I've ever tasted. This was only about three months ago.
One of my Pilsners and another Bavarian lager brewed with honey that I knocked up 2 months ago are also high on the list!
See the boys down at the Bull n Bush,
Ah, the Bull. First door work I ever did. Was there for about 11 months when I was 18-19.
Awesome beer! In Germany they have the purity laws, alowing only select ingredients in their beer BY LAW. No sugar
Along with Simo I also found this confusing. We both know what hops is and we both know that the two main ingredients in beer are sugar and water. The sugar is extracted from the grain, you don't just chuck whole grain in with yeast. Hops is an ingredient only in particular types of beers. Therefore at the risk of being "no shit sherlocked", you can't make beer with "No sugar" ;)
another Bavarian lager brewed with honey that I knocked up 2 months ago are also high on the list!
*moving back to sydney, setting up tent on johnnys front lawn, and singing terribly until I get to try one of those bad boys !! :D

I had a beer with a chili in the bottle once. Not sure if they brew it with chili or just chuck in a chili when they bottle it. Very very tasty. But normally Becks or Coopers. As said before no sugar and no 222(or whatever number) preservative, so no hangover. You piss brown from the Coopers but.
you will piss brown from any alcohol. it dehydrates you and when you're dehydrated, you piss a darker shade. you want ur piss to be clear or a very light yellow.

Ok Johnny Im sorry for offending you. But im saying from past experiences ( Ive only been able to legally drink for six months), and comming from a private school, guys would often come to parties with very expensive imported beer and it soon turned into a match of parents money and alcohol availability. I think it was Lyon Nathan that just tried to do a hostile take over of Coopers. Only thing was, the majority (I think it was all) of the stock is still owned by the Coopers family. No back door here Mr. dirty Capitalist Lyon Nathan ;) Bloods thicker than money mofo!

Yeah thats been in the news heaps here. The problem is that there are a few members of the cooper family, holding shares that want to sell. the other porblem is the other member cant afford to buy them out at a greater price than wat lion nathan are offering. so you see the problem? another problem is some old bithc left her shares to Prince Alfred College (god knows why) n they are gettin parent backlash to campitalise on teh $17.1 million they stand to gain if they sell them. its lookin dark for coopers unfortunatly bu theyll hold onto it.

Forgive him father for he knows not what he says.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have covered this enough in this thread so I will attempt to be brief.
IMHO there is a vast lack of experimentation out there when it comes to beer, beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. There are so many varieties out there that it baffles me how we can be happy settling with mass market stuff such as VB, XXXX, Toohey's, Coopers, Boags, Cascade, etc. Before the flaming begins, let me explain.
All the beers listed are not special, but they do have an important place and they perform their intended role very well. Each of these breweries do put out some very good quality products, but their best sellers seem to be a little too similar to each other. I wont go into the tasting notes for each, but they are similar.
There are that many beers in the world, that you could have a different one each day for the rest of your life and still not try them all. Micro breweries and even large breweries are catering for a growing demand by releasing new varieties.
There is a vast selection just waiting for you at your fingertips people, either at your local bottle shop or online.
www.worldbeers.com.au (shop)
www.internationalbeershop.com.au (shop)
www.bottledbeer.co.uk (database for bottled beer)
www.quaffale.co.uk (breweries in the UK)
If cost is a prohibiting factor, BREW YOUR OWN! The possibilities are endless.
I'm getting a little side tracked, but suffice it to say, get out there and try something different! I know there are some enlightened ones among you, your posts are scattered through this thread. Spread the word, don't suffer mediocre beer any longer.
Time for me to put my high horse away, have a pint of Brewers Gold and have a lie down.:o

I sure didnt. I thought it tasted like shit! I could see the attractiveness tho. When you chill it heaps, it can take the bitterness out for a mouthful or two... Over time it grew a bit.... It always used to amaze me how people liked it.

Favourite beers,
Hmmm
Squires Pale ale is right up there
Newcastle Brown
Strauffe Hendrick from Brugge in belguim
Hacker-Pschorr from Munich (actually there are so many german beers I love DAB, etc. Guess its in the blood)
My homebrew amber ale and pale ale are in my eyes the goods.
Beaz Neez
Sooo many, I don;t think I could ever single out one best beer. Is beer, is Good.

sounds like me when i walk into dan murphy's to buy beer. go to buy beer and i spend far to long trying to decide what i want.
/me wishes for an endless slab of beer
Funny that. I had my first beez neez in darwin 2003. At a place called ducks nuts (no kidding) Its on special down here for $50 a case from BWS (beer wine spirits) so i geuss suppliers shouldnt be to hard to find.
Also another fan of corona's and stella's. Nothing can beat a cold melbourne on a hot day either...

I drinky cheaper for my mates who keg their home brew and serve it out the tap located on their fridge. Some of the best beer I've tasted.
Their Ginger beer,
Their 'phil's pils'
Got a couple of homemade Irish stout longnecks for my birthday. Was singing Pearl Jam after those. Was good. I like the meal in a bottle approach to brewing.
stella. Don't ask me why.
Ok, its official... Guinness is the best beer ever - having just spent a couple of weeks in Ireland and sampled some propper guinness, i can now say - GUINNESS IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Guinness can't get any fresher than that, it's a shame it doesn't travel well.
I haven't had a Guinness that good since visiting St James' Gate either. Did the Pikies try and take you for a pony ride when you left?:)
Gotta love Ireland, going to Belfast for Xmas/New Years.
Holandia, the best thing to ever come out of holand. Its 5% so not a pussy but unfortunaly only comes in a in 335 ml bottles, but its possibly the best ever. only 25 bucks a case too.
PS exclusive to coles only.

I'm happy to pay the extra $$$ for such a good beer!
It was touch and go there for a while and LN isn't going down without a fight (http://www.finance.news.com.au/story/0,10166,17495045-14334,00.html).
On another note - I've got Beez Neez package up to my armpits over here - we've also got it on tap atm.
They even give me a free carton when I buy a bakers dozen. Guffaw.

DAB, Bitburger and Zywiec for the overseas stuff.

Has anyone tried Cascade Blonde yet?
It's so good I'm getting hard just thinking about it!
It's a wheat beer similar (possibly identical but can't verify) to Cascades summer blonde that was part of their extortionate seasonal range however instead of 18 bucks for four, their pricing them against VB, Carlton etc!
Premium beer for dishwater prices!
I think I might have one now!

Sweet, sweet 'Becks' has to be my all time fav(too easy to drink), with James Boags Premium a close second and Blue Tongue third. Johnnys home brew for large burps. Oh and VB when i cant afford anything but 3 longnecks for a dollar. I must say though I will drink any beer if 1. i dont have anything else cold to drink or 2. Its free.

On this Australia day, I'm halfway through my first ever Unibroue 'La Fin Du Monde' which I believe may be French for 'Greatest Beer Humanity Has Ever Known', I'm sure nicho or cortinabloke can confirm that for me.

Well I participated in a blinded test involving twelve or so beers and redback came out as the clear winner. Interestingly, we mistook corona and asahi for lite-ice and carlton cold.
But I guess such a test would be biased towards beers with a bold and distinct flavours...
My favourite is chimay blue.

Theres a local brewery in Perth called Little Creatures, they make some good brews, the pale ale from there is pretty good. Its a rare occasion that i have that so the usual is tooheys extra dry, its a fullstrength but it tastes like a light. If im trying to get pissed off beer, ill go for Tooheys extra dry platinums.
Then agen, if i am getting trashed i'd rather bourbon than beer, but i still love it, oh do i love it.

I blew some dough at a Belgium Beer Cafe the other day...
Weird Cherry beer, forget the brand... Interesting... to sweet for my liking, but pretty crazy taste...
Trappist Beers: I threw a few Chimay's back... That is a very unique beer experience. Merky brown beer, lovely taste, strong (8.5% ish)
Worth a try.

For the price Coopers Pale Ale and James Boag Premium (well... it isn't that cheap, but it's my favourite ATM) can't be beat. Only beer that has been 'perfect' was a home brew I had at Palm Creek (hippie fest/music fest), all made by hand, they even went all out and caramelised (not too familiar with home brew terminology) with 600 degree hot rocks. Threw them in with the mixture and it bubbled away. Best aroma ever! These guys know their stuff, can't wait to go back next year.

I must get my hands on a six pack of these, I have heard nothing but good from them!

Worth a try. It's called Kreik and I love it. Got seriously drunk one night in Brussels, alone and had to get some friends in Australia to give me directions home from an online street directory over the mobile. One of the best nights...., weeks of my life.
Everytime I drink that beer now, it takes me back. Life is good.
I had Banana Beer a week or so ago. Imagine drinking a fizzy banana smoothie with an after taste of average lager. It had novelty value for about 4 sips then it was just gross.
I have also been drinking Peroni, Dos Equis, Becks & Coopers Longnecks (Red & Green).
Last night I went drinking with my dad, he drinks only Reschs but he bought me over 4 longies of Coopers Red. In 3 hours I drank 3.5 of the long necks, Nell had the other 1/2 when she got home from work. Went to be at 11ish, up at 5am, no hangover. This is why Coopers is my favourite beer.

Must say Grolsch (in those flip top bottles ie. imported) has been a long standing favorite of mine even at $15 for a 4 pack, just love the smooth malty taste. Unfortunately "for me" it doesn't taste the same in the regular bottled 6 pack.
I see a few others that have stumbled upon that Asashi Super Dry, it nearly tops Grolsch for me with it's super malty taste....up in NWQld I paid $21 (6 pack) to get that taste and didn't regret a dollar of it. I see it's bottled in SEAsia..sorry can't remember the country...Thailand? maybe.
But my regular everyday brew is Cascade Premium Light.....still tasty though.

Chinese eh. I think theres a singaporian one called Sapporo (sp?) and another called Tiger, i dont know if they come to aus because ive never seen one, but i hear they are some of the few good beers in asia.
And as for the underage guy. Im underage too but i don't use that as an excuse, i drink as much, probably more, than most adults so no whinging because your young.

Lucky Beer?
I think I ended up spending about 6 bucks on a bottle of that from my local ale shoppe. tastewise it was fairly inoffensive. Wish I could say the same about the price. It's brewed in Oz and is a fairly bland 4.8% yet because it comes in a fancy bottle it goes for a kings ransom. If you're going to pay for bottle alone, I'd go for Rubbels Sexy Lager as it's rather a nice drop from those friendly belgians and there's a naked chick on the front with a scratch-off bikini. It's also a bit cheaper than Lucky...
Refering to the above post: You've gotta try Unibroues Fin Du Monde. It is f***ing awesome! Delightful and nutty, kinda like Special Brew for executive tramps with educated palates!
On the subject of Asian beers though. I'm currently on my laptop in a bar in Johor Bahru, Malaysia enjoying an after-work pint of ice cold Tiger. TBH it's not the greatest beer on earth - could do with a bit more character in the taste - but it's bloody refreshing. Wi-Fi and bars are a great thing when you're bored. If only they'd get take the f***ing Scorpions off the stereo...
Coopers Pale Ale, Carlton Cold and Cascade Premium Light are my favourites. Mental Note to self: need to try the other Coopers beers as well. VB and Heineken are disgusting.

A man's beer drinking odyssey can often start out shaped by the prejudices imposed by upbringing/culture/whatever's cheapest at the local pub. Sometimes you've just gotta think outside the box and reach for the stars (or whatever looks fancy and different at the local bottle-o) TBH if you find one you like and you drink enough of it to end up awaking in a plant pot with soiled shorts and a serious case of the shakes and/or self loathing, you're on to a winner!

not wrong about the tiger. as long as it's damn cold and in a glass after a hard days work or riding then it goes down fan-slooby-tastically.
the brewery is in singapore. i still have a bunch of parephenalia (sp?) such as glasses and coolers and hats and whatnot from when i lived over there.

Actually no it's not. That is a VERY common misconception apparently. We talked about it in commerce the other day, with me feeling rather foolish at the end of the discussion.
And yes I realise that he can't read it due to him being banned, but for all of your other farkin'ers.
There was no need for you to feel foolish (well now you do) because you were right. In NSW (dont know about oter states), A minor is legally allowed to consume liquor under the supervision of a parent or Guardian in an unlicensed premises.
This is set-out in section 144 and 145 of the Liquor Act(NSW,1982)
Section 114 (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/la1982107/s114.html)
Section 115 (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/la1982107/s115.html)

No problems there bud. I feel I'm here not just to entertain but also to inform...;)
I reckon it takes a lot of time (older age?) to genuinely appreciate a GOOD beer.
Like every uni student, I drank whatever was cheapest - VB and Tooheys - and this continued until until I was about 25-28 years old (when I also began to appreciate fine wines).
Part of the fact is that as you get older, you are not drinking simply to get as maggoted as possible - I now drink to appreciate the beer/wine along with good company, rather than simply get pissed.
Two beeers I tried a few weeks ago:
Carlton Black - rate this as Australia's most flavourLESS beer - crap.
Carlton Pure Blonde - very surprised by this one - good flavour, good colour - very drinkable.
Amstel Lager - dutch lager - good aroma, very drinkable.

Crap
Old Speckled Hencrap in a can, fantastic hand pulled. seriously really good.Favourites for me when I still drank were Staropramen and Gambrinus.
Tiger, Anchor, Bintang, they all suck IFYAM! Come to think of it, Johor Baru aint the nicest place on earth either!
In terms of Asian beer, its all about Beer Chang:cool: Anything that use fermaldohite (sp?) as a preservative, with no regulation on the alchohol content, must be good:cool:
Beer Laos was a decent drop too, certainly superior to the likes of Tiger or Anchor.
Amstel Lager - dutch lager - good aroma, very drinkable.
Up until this point I've considered you someone with a decent eye / palate for a good beer, but Amstel? I've never tasted a beer with so little, well, anything to it. It's like drinking mildly carbonated yellow water.
On the "it's not really beer" front; tried Mac's Gold recently and it's easily the nicest midstrength I've had in a while. Could happily put a six-pack of it away.

Been into the Asahi Super Dry lately (on tap at Story Bridge Hotel) and recently had a go at Kirin.
Both are great beers in my opinion.

I really find the over analysis of liqour in general to be a frightful bore.
I used to be right into beer and wines and can talk immense amounts of bullshit about either, but to be honest, it's bloody tiring!
It's just a drink, so let's just bloody well drink it!
I've tried far too many beers now, and there's far too many in the world for me to try them all (which of course I feel obliged to do in fairness), so I've retreated to a James Sqires/Coopers/Tooheys Old axis. Plenty of variety in styles, it's known to be good, and not too expensive.
The beers I'm interested in trying are the bad ones... There's far less bad beer than good beer, and it gives me something to complain about!
Speaking of which, has anyone tried Michelob Ultra? It got one of the very few totally negative reviews I've ever seen in the SMH Good Living section.

Michelob is definately one of the worst beers I've ever had. I was in a jungle in Southern MAlaysia and I was given a few that had come from Singapore. I refused the rest after the first, that's how farking bad it was!
IF I remember correctly, Amstel is a budget beer in Europe!
I'm not a beer wanker, but I really do enjoy a good beer. My favourite is still definately one that I had made myself, but I think the difference between a good and bad beer is so distinct that the pursuit of finding, drinking and discussing the good ones is a worthy pursuit!

Old Speckled Hen in a can defeats the point of Old Speckled Hen.
Spitfire is an awesome ale, mmm ale. Might be a bit hard to get in Oz but I think I've seen it in Dan Murphy's.
I do tend to lean towards ales but some lagers are nice as is Corona.
Hobgoblin rocks "What's the matter lager boy, Afraid you might taste something?"

Kicking back with a nice cold Xuehua Pijiu right now It's brewed using the original and natural process, using the choiced hops, rice and barely malt, relax and enjoy this fine tasting beer.
It's 3.6% and makes the Yanjing Pijiu, that I just replaced it with, taste good.

All over one single beer.......
I've sampled a very large variety of beers in my time. I rarely buy a beer that isn't 'boutique'.
My pick of the bunch is 'Deus'.

Brewed in Belgium, finished in France.
Beware though, it's $50+ per bottle.
I had two longnecks of VB last night. Fuck it was terrible & I feel more than a little dusty this morning. Never again (probably).
