Can anyone recommend some single crown suspension for jumping/drops/light downhill (just riding the tracks not racing) :?:

Thanks

Marzocchi make some nice forks in the DirtJumper series, but one drawback is tyre clearance with them, acceptable when you see the leg size!
.
Manitou have the Sherman's which are sick forks, the blacks which are sick LIGHT forks, but only the top of the range are any good.

Fox make some sweet forks nowadays as well..

My personal favourite would be a DirtJumper 1 with QR20 front axle...

I suggest the QR20 axle, it's an important thing to have on a single crown long travel fork...

If you're on a budget, DJ3's are the way to go. If you can afford it, the Foxes are quite nice, but then again so is everything over about $1k (I reckon Foxes are niceR though ;) )

If you're thinking of getting Marzocchi forks and you ride more trails than dirt jumps then get the Z1. If dirt jumps and big drops are your thing get the DJ's. I haven't ridden the other brands so I can't really comment.

Although I saw a guy with a pair of Psylos the other day, it sounded like his headset was loose but the steerer had actually come loose in the crown. Sweet

Don't go for the DJ series and here is why, the DJ's are built for taking big hit impacts, they have almost no small bump sensitivity. that might not sound like a big deal, but on the trail you'll feel alot of feedback in the bars, sure it will take drops nice, but if the trail leading to or riding out of is less then smooth it could make rolling into the drop sketchy or make your ride out hard to head into the direction you want. the z1 series is definetly the best for multi-purpose riding. it has small bump sensitivity, big drop capabilities and a lock out to help climbing to freeride spots. marz makes a 6" single crown, the Z 150 too. Shermans also seem nice, i've heard good things, but Marz has been making freeride forks since the mid 90's so they have some experience. if you intend to do the drops the Psylos aren't a good choice either.

Thats an interesting thing to say freerider125, since some of the z1 series forks come with the same damping system as the dj series forks.....

Thats an interesting thing to say freerider125, since some of the z1 series forks come with the same damping system as the dj series forks..... the z1's use an hscv cartridge valving and external rebound where as the DJ's an open bath ssv valving with internal rebound. you'd see the difference when you open them up. i'm not a suspension engineer, so i won't pretend to be. the main difference though is the dual coil springs in the DJ's. it basically is the same difference between the Jr.t and the Super t. Z1's are much more adjustable to match terrain. hope that helps.

have had various RS and Marzocchi forks over the years, and every time i have pulled them apart i've been really unimpressed with the seals and bushings in pretty much all the rockshox i've seen.
the bombers always seem to have a much better designed, and had longer lasting bushing and seal set-ups.
i've also found that even the higher end RS products don't compare in feel to the bombers. the bombers have always felt much plusher and smoother. this includes directly comparing a set of 02 psylos at 100mm to a set of 01 z4's 100 mm.
haven't had the chance to try any fox yet, so can't comment there.
for general trail, and light to moderate drops, try any of the Z range.
i'll only buy bombers now. (plus the online help from marzocchi is second to none)

i've myself some manitou black super airs. very light very nice but.... eventhough they ARE the 100mm - 120mm you can't convert to 120mm because manitou don't make that spring (well that is what the aussie rep says anyway cus i tried to get one) so i've had to get a few custom made (got some spare to sell too they are equiv to themedium ride kit)
yes so anyway. they can be set up to only take the big hits ( how i like em cause the little ones don't bothere me at all. may as well not have suspension if you are riding just a little bit rocky place i.e. rocks bout 1-15 cm round) and you can set them up to take all the little bumps. just let out or put in more air! however if the hit is too big like a serious bottom out then they loose a bit of air. but they are not cheap :( so you may want to some thing else.

about other suspension i've never ridden anything other and manitou so i don't know what rs or mz are like though i hear good things about mz and semi-good things bout rs

easy you'd only want the single crown shivers tho? they cost a bomb? does anyone have them? do they flex?

Commander Dilsnikk
02-09-2003, 09:59 PM
saw a pair of sc shivers the other day...the flex was AMAZING...he said it didn't effect him too much...
but if u put the wheel between ur knees and turn the handlebars there was a good 20-30 degrees rotation...not what i'm looking for in a fork...

try sherman fireflys...i've never tried them but i only hear goo things...and check out mtbreview.com for what others have said

I got Sherman Firefly's on my AC2 and am very happy. Had to get firm ride kit (ti spring=$$$) but after that they were awesome. Very smooth, responsive and stiff compared to my old RS. Friend just got a 03 stinky with the DJ3's and I definately agree with previous comments about their suitability for trail riding. The small bump response just isn't comparable to the sherman. That said, they are almost half the price and my mate is pretty happy all the same. It really depends on how much you want to spend. DJ3 - $700, Psylo XC/SL - $800/1000, Flick/Firefly - $1175/1385
approx prices.

2_fast_4_U : sorry if if I've offended you, but the reason why I wrote what I did was because I thought this subject was about what type of suspension you find to be to your likeing. & that is why i wrote this because these forks are huge, heavy & plush, that's why I like them.

i owned a pair of shiver sc, and they were flexy only when off the bike and twisting them and looking for flex - it was never noticed when riding ever.
i think the 04 has only 4 inches of travel aswell, so maybe the sherans would be better
