I'm selling my computer, and want to get everything off it. It has a CD burner and Nero installed - I've never used it before though.
I just tried to burn a whole heap of stuff but it all got saved in .DAT format...
Can I burn photos/videos/programs/documents etc all at once? Or do I need a separate CD for each thing? How the fuck do I make it work? Getting really frustrated. What would be ideal is a step by step guide...who's up for the challenge?

Nero is usually pretty straight forward. You can put all those different kinds of files on one data cd.
Just drag and drop the files and folders you want and then click the burn icon in the centre of the toolbar. This will open the burn dialogue and it should be fairly self explanatory from there.

You can burn whatever you want to a CD, just make sure you create a "data cd" when you start Nero.
If you still can't get it to work then try switching to Nero Express, or the Nero Wizard view, that should help.

F1, it has great help files.
Nero is probably the easiest burning software I've come accross.
Nero wizard > compile cd > data cd, then drag+drop all the files yuo want to burn to the lefthand pane. keep an eye on the bar down the bottom, it'll show you how much space you have left. When that's done, click "burn", chose a burn speed, if your computer is grunty enough there's no need to create an image, and away you go.

yeah listen to that that is what u have to do to stop it from burning to a .DAT file .. i think it does that as in makes it a vcd! i have a vcd at home and the format of the cd is exactly the same as when nero burns it .. am i right??

Nah for VCD you first want to burn your cd to .EXE format, then rename to .BAT then compress it with your video compression deconstructor.
Then, and only then can you boot it into your VCD player.
Clear?
ah ok thanx no wonder when i tried it didnt work thanx for that i understand now
