Last night(wednesday 6th of October) I was out on a uni field trip to karawatha forest to go frogging. Karawatha as some of you may know is one of if not the best spot in australia for frog diversity. We arrived at the frog pond and were walking around on the board walk which has been constructed when a group of six cross country guys come riding right though the middle of the area! Now, as you all know I ride and love it and I ain't a hippy conservationist but this realy got me annoyed!

Karawatha is closed to riding like almost every where else in brisbane but if you are going to go riding in these places I would expect to stick to the fire roads or, even the few single tracks that are in the forest. Seeing five guys and a girl riding though with there lights on, not sticking to any track at all just randomly destroying habit realy struck a nerve.

No wonder we dont' get any support from conservation parties because they know we dont' have any where to ride but I am sure that if we stuck to pre defined tracks that have already been built(illegal or legal) we might have a chance of gaining some support!

I know our situation, but we realy arn't helping ourselves with actions like this. Hopefully the fact we told them they were destroying endangered frog habitat(one of only 2 spots one of the frogs is found) they may alteast chose to stay on tracks next time.. :(

I know this doesnt' relate directly to all of you but I am sure that alot of you have similar situations and I thought it was worth cross posting from mtbdirt. Stay on the track guys and gals if we want to get recognition from other groups who have just as much if not more right to use these areas.

I live about 10mins ride from karawatha personally, and it's a regular spot to just ride around in since it's so close.

It's not "closed to riding", the rangers are fine with the mtb guys riding in most areas.

I just think you are barking up the wrong tree, considering karawatha is NOT a spot that is constantly doused in MTB'ers, or rangers (for obvious reasons.... nothing to crack down on except MX bikers)

TBH I don't know where you are talking about in terms of these frogs or whatever, and I can see your concern if the people were riding off the track...... but honestly, 99% chance they didn't know it was an "endangered frog habitat", and I don't think it's that big a deal.

my two cents.
