Hey guys, do you think I should get a Banshee scream frame to build a freeride/downhill bike. I can get an 02 for $900. Is this a good price?

mate, that is quite a good price there.
If you can, take it for a ride and see how you feel on it, as that is the only way to be sure if it's good for you.

Banshee have just anounced that dirtworks is going to be there australian dealer, and the prices are going to get a motza cheaper as a result.
therefore, it might be wiser to spend a little more on a NEW frame, for reliability, size and other good aspects about buying new.

$900 for a scream frame is sweet if its in good condition
i looked at dirt works and they are still alot well i dont know how much they were befor but they are about $2750 from wat i remember. so its not a little more but like tripple the price.

The other thing with the banshee's is they attract big hitting riders who belive that the frame can handle 20ft to flat drops every week... These frames generally get alot of abuse and could have hidden flaws from a history of rough riding...
check out NSMB to see how many people are trying to get rid of their banshee screams... VERY INTERESTING......

They actually can do 40footers to flat everyday for 2years, because in addition to the 10yrs for manufacturers defects both the Scream and Morphine come with a 2year warranty on overload and fatigue. So if it breaks...ya get a new one, but that's only if you bought it new.
Farker, makes a good point...but I'd go further and say any used frame could have hidden flaws...they say a DH race bike is only really good for a season and even those superlight aluminium XC bikes won't last long after a few seasons of constant riding.

Sounds like a reasonable price dependent on age and wear/tear I guess. I payed a little bit more than that in early 2004 for a 2003 model one which had done ~6 weeks work, and had the front triangle replaced under warranty due to a fault with the original one- and it was never refitted with parts, instead shipped back to Australia as a frame. However mine was probably mostly cheap because it came from one of the biggest banshee retailers in the world, on-top bikeshop in Canuckland. So the original owner got a good price new, used it in Canada, then had no use for it when it got back here therefore it was a very good deal for me.
That said, thats a substantial amount of money by comparison to what I paid for one with a 1 month old rear triangle/shock and a brand new front half , when yours is 3 years old and had who knows what amount of abuse in that time...
Its cheap, and it isn't cheap. For that money I'd go with it.
yeah, that's a good price.

not quite.
A std NEW '05 Scream (with Fox DHX 5.0 rear shock) will cost $2550
while the Bender Ltd edition with Blood red paint (same rear shock) will be $2770

The price sounds good.
For the current pricing on the '05 models see my previous post (above)
But as with any 2nd hand frame, particualy one sold for extreme hucking, check it over very carefully.
Look at things like the shock mounts, if they are showing any signs of stress, there is a good chance that the shock has been bottoming. If that has been happening repeatardly, the frame could be questionable.
I'd talk to someone like Grip (Gripsport) about getting it checked over first.

DW-1 has it right. and going to the guys at grip would be a great idea, if your in melbourne (i think thats where grip is). if not, just take it to your local bike store, and a second bike store, and get them to check it over.
deffinately go for aride (an actual ride, not a carpark thrash), and test it properly. have agood look at the owner, ho much does he weigh? how tal is he? go riding with him/her, and look at the riding style - thrashing and rough? or smooth and flowing? this could give you a good idea on how much the bike has been hamered. also, look at the parts he has on it, does he have 'hucking' gear or DH stuff? (so what sort of riding has he been doing) does the owner race? and how often? has the bike been lookied after well? if he's been taking it to a store, then that's probably ok, but if it's all done himself, maybe take a better look at it. read one or both of my massive posts in the Downhilling and Parts/Gear forums section, where i talk about what to look for in a second hand bike. they're both in threads about buying new bikes. have a look at them, i put some effort in writing them, and so far people seem to like them.
have you thought about buying a whole new bike (not bulding up fROM FRAME ONLY)? Coz' the build kits are farkin good value, the lower level build (Fox 40s and DHX 5.0, w/Sram X.7) comes in at under $6800 or for a littl e less you could get a Demo 9, which as my name sugests i think are the best bikes around. however, i wont bore you with prais eof that wonderful peice of machinery.
Banshee's are awsome (not as awsome as Demo's but still awsome). simple as that.
Cheers,

Have heard alot about this bike never riden one but it looks very nice, $900 seems reasonable for the frame price i think it would be money well spent.
