Michelin Airless Tyres (http://www.racingfanatics.com/NAIS%20Home%20Page/tweel.htm)
looks different.
Indeed, maybe not so much for cars, but for industrial usage I can see them being viable. If you want a tech-geek perspective, Ridemonkey (http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107167) is sure to provide some lively debate as the E-ngineers post there.

I want some........just for braggin rights ;)
they're pretty fugly though
I think Rik is right, they would certainly have uses in industry but the expense might limit them for passenger car use etc..

Saw these on Ridemonkey and was left wondering how they'd cope in mud and small stones.

I think they would pick up a lot of MUD! What do you think about the weight though? Would they be lighter or heavier? More expensive to maintain when they are mass produced than normal wheels we have now?

I'd say they would probably end up cheaper that conventional tyres for normal car use (in quite a few years time). The process of producing a modern radial belted tyre involves a quite a few steps and quite a few different materials. Plus there is a bunch of $$$ being sunk into sidewall technology and Run Flat capability. These look to me like once they are sorted they will be relatively cheap to make as it would be a two step process, cast the frame of the tyre and then put the rubber on it. Imagine the possibilities of having a tyre with almost no lateral flex. Unreal.

if we were to get these on bikes they would probably weigh more considering how much bike tyres all ready weigh (not much really), these could add another kilo per tyre if you want a 2.7 or other large size tyre. an upside would be no pinch flats to go with the no punctures statement.

I'm sure some sort of sidewall would be developed to protect the strands? I'm thinking something flexible, just as a cover.
