Well, I've finally come to it. Re-enabling avatars and pictures in signatures.
Before I do so I'd like to get a quick idea of people's thoughts on the subject.
Do you like the site with or without either of these?

Scott, I like the avatars, gives some personalisation, and I get to know peoples avatars without reading their names.
But, having pics in the signature is not necessary, in my opinion - just more clutter really. Have a sig, by allmeans, I do, but a pic takes room up.

The other thing to consider is that you can turn off viewing of avatars and signatures all together in personal preferences.

I agree with Schblack; the avatar is good, but the signature is a bugger on dial up.
Avatars are cool, easy way of identifying people... as for sig images, only if there was a dimension+filesize limit, to make them unobtrustive. A slim banner accross the bottom is all you'd want/need, any more than that and they become a nuisance.

Ok well it's fairly clear that everyone wants Avatars, so I've re-enabled them. Still deciding on pics in sigs.

Avatars is cool. In the sigs is too but its some times a killer for us 56K users!
avatars and no sigs, with the new format the posts are already spaced pretty far apart, and sigs would extend that even more so.
Avatar and no sig looks much cleaner.

I'm on the pro-avatar / anti-sig pic wagon; but can I also make a mention of quotes in sigs.
I think having quotes in your sig can be cool, but can everyone please consider using traditional quotation marks and plain text instead of the VBB quote boxes? The things are huge and end up bigger than most images.

Good call. :)

I can disabled vb (bb) code in sigs which would get ride of quotes, but it would be at the expense of bold, italics, and hyperlinks.
I think... leave VBB code on, and us adminators can chase up the sigs if they're an issue... it would create a bit of extra work, but I'd rather edit a sig every now and then than sacrifice creativity in sigs. Oh, and a character limit like in phpBB was a bit of a hassle when you had 3 or 4 hyperlinks in the sig, even though you only had 20 odd characters displayed in your sig, the length of the url code blew that out a fair bit. I don't know if there's a character code now, but I found the previous system to be a hassle in that regard.

Hey admins,
Is there any chance of enabling gif images for avatars? I doubt it causes any problems to people on dial up seeing they are so small.
I like signatures as well, as long as the images are small.

I think they are a good idea, avatars and img's. Creativity and expression are not things to be held back. I know they cause problems, and are a hassle. Though if they are hosted elsewhere they wouldn't affect the sites bandwidth, would they? Anyway...my 2 cents

that would be pretty cool. i am on dial up and i dont really care.

i reckon have just avatars, and no pics in sigs. but i liked the link to the persons profile that said there name and bike/s.
thanks for bringing avs back, i use them as a visual reference (duh) rather than looking at names.
yeah no images in sigs, that always pissed me off anyway!

bring them both back. gives the site more personality as well. if different groups of people have the same sigs gives them a group type of thing as well. the little farkin things where pretty cool. also gives it more colour to the kinda dull colours that it is atm as well. and as scott said you can turn them off so why not have them switched on and those that have an issue can just turn them off......pretty simple!

how do you resize the avatar images. the one i had for the old forums is too big in resolution but well under in size (kb). what do i do?

Depends on the software you have.
In Photoshop go to Image-Image Size and set it to less than 80 pixels
In Windows Paint go to Image-Stretch/Skew (CTRL-W) and reduce it to about 60% of the orginal
I don't have any other Graphics software but if you post what you've got I'm sure someone will know.
EDIT: Looks like you worked it out, nice pair! :D

Would it be possible to get the max avatar size (pixel wise anyway) a tiiiiiiiny bit bigger. particularly if you have a very rectangle shape image 80x80 pixels is pretty small (although that could be because I run my resolution at 2048x1536 pixels:D )

like superman said already where we have our name and our bikes is a good idea!!

you should make the avators a bit bigger to 120 x 120. thats a resonable size. not 80 x 80. that means you dont have to make it square and the rectangle ones you can actually see.

I would prefer no avatars and to just have sig imgs. As they can link and all that junk people like to do.

Avatars - yes
Sig - I couldn't care less. If you set a restriction on the images you can put in there (like none) I wouldn't mind. Keep is small and simple
Avatars yes, but that's all done anyways. As for the sigs, the small banners don't bother me, big pics do. Avatar size is too small. I believe they used to be a good size, how many others think so?

IMO: Make Avtars a bit bigger for the rectangular people
Is there any method to limit Sig Picture dimention/Size?
Any chance of getting the old ones back?

Just wondering when the decision will be made?
I vote to bring both back, as somone has already said, there is an option that enables you to turn off the sigs (so you do not view them).
I am also with wombat on the pro avatar and anti picture signature.
Just neater and easier to read.

I personally liked the signatures on the old phpbb forum. Maybe just allow the farkin sig,(of your name, location, bikes and what crew you are from.)

allow just avators and the farkin sigs. they were good. then the site would look good

you should be able to set the maximum size of signature pictures in the admin control panel.. at least, that's what you can do in phpBB.
i'd suggest something along the lines of 450x110 and no larger than 150kb.
in case you haven't guessed, i'm all for avatars and sig pics.

Not quite sure what version you were running, because you definitley couldn't do that in phpBB 2.0.x.

your sig is wrong.....
my intent to vent is not innocent.
anyway, enable pics in sigs.....it would be good.

O/T, but would a different vb theme or something help minimize spacing? I mean spacing between posts, and spacing between thread titles etc. Would be nice to have at a later date if its possible.
As for sigs/avatars -
I'd say avatars are fine, and pics in sigs are fine by me too, but put a size limit on them. Both length width and filesize. The farkin sigs were cool too.

I've decided that images in signatures will not be switched on. The forums are much cleaner without, and load times much better. The user profile signature pictures may come back, but that is it.
Avatar sizes have been increased to 100x100.

I just noticed the different template in bottom left corner:) im using the farkin theme, i think sigs should be enabled for personality and any one who doesnt like them can turn them off in there profile, or just ignore a certain user

no, good :(
I agree, it seems there is a majority that wanted them back.
Oh well, 'tis a shame this forum isn't a democracy ;)
Funny though, the ones with the bigger/more annoying sig images are the ones that vocally want the return of them, yet I'm sure these people are part of the reason they're now disabled.

actually, it was said to lisa and her smart friend (name?) in "the telltale heart". they invite lisa to play anagrams, and that is the end of it.
so "My cats breath smells like catfood".
oh, and this is way old, and there is little or no chance of the outcome changing.

LOL Images in sigs only may come from behind to take the lead, in the next couple of years or so. But yeh the outcome seems conclusive
