My PH is dangerously high and tommorow im going to the aquarium to buy some chemicals to fix it, hopefully i will have some fish left :( started with 12 now i have 5 1/2 that 1/2 being very sick and the others obviously dead.
Anyways, Would a high PH make my tank smell and be cloudy and dark?
Could the high PH level be cause by the gravel? its been stored in a plastic bag for a while and i washed it around 10 times before putting it in the tank
all help greatly appreciated, and if there is a way to lower the ph level without the chemicals for tonight untill i get to aquarium tommorow that would be appreciated
Ive also done a 50% water change

twas sad indeed. im still suprised he managed to live in my craphole aquarium that long though. worst part was he was worth 80 bucks. damnit! btw what type of fish do you have?some are pretty tough while others die pretty easy. but a ph kit and some balance (in both directions) or coral should sort it out.

yeah corral, shells etc, should should lower pH, but we dont all have that on hand do we! may be your best bet is to get some temporay tanks set up with some fresh water (provideing you have the purfier stuff) {i think you can do this} ...
frmo my knowledge the cloudy/smelly water is not caused by a high pH level, but by over feeding and insuficcient filtering but i could very well be wrong
i am not sure about the gravel scenario... spose it could?
any wya i am sory to hear about the fish, my favourite fish died last week, i seen pretty much the same fish in a shop selling for 260 bucks!!!
btw, what kind of fish are they?
sorry i could not be to much help, i will ask my mother when she gets home and see if there is any other way to lower the pH!!

When you did the water change you did let it sit for 12 hours or add some chems that taks the chlorine and other shat out? With stones and anything else that is'nt living that i put in my tank , i ussually boil it for about 10 mins to disinfect it before it goes in.

i have a few different types, goldern serverum (had 2 one just died, they were a breeding pair also), two geophaguos serinemous 'es (red horse face), couple clown loaches, pink kissers or something, and a gold fish becasue his fish pond got smashed so now he is in my fish tank..lol
i also have some other sucking fish not sure of there names through one looks like a flathead, and the other one is a golden sucking loach or something?
i have had others, but they come and go with time
there all pretty hardy fish, a few of them made the car trek from adelaide to melbourne, when we moved states!
sorry about the spelling/ and correct names i think names vary from state to state?
sorry for the semi off -topic blab
ah yes, i also like to boil/disenfect items before i put them in my tank, even if it is just from one tank to another, i like to be safe.
whozas just noticed 500 posts...did not even know i close to that!

The main point is let the water sit in a clean bucketb in the sun for the day before you add it and yes the corrals are good PH lowers. It could also be Amonia,Nitrate or Nitrite problem(Ican'tremember the chemical reaction of them) or your filter aint up for it. You need a good bacteria culture in your filter to brake down the shit, if you turn of the filter for to long you kill the bacteriaculture. Same if you steralize everything in a healthy aquarium. Oh yeah fish need fuck all food so that could be the problem also.
