I don't know if it's similar, but Nitwit on the forums has just had spinal fusion for his back dramas and he's back on the bike, so there's hope for you yet.

Sorry to hear that mate.. but if you want something bad enough .. you can work for it.

Research your problem on the net .. look for strength exercises .. talk to other sports Dr's.

ooo .. and one more thing.

Please make an effort with your spelling dude, Dont want to sound like your mum or anything .. but it's hard to read that short shit.

Maybe you could go get a Recumbent Trike. It's impossible to do a 2inch kerb huck on them, but just being something different and a new experience will soo make you forget about your problems I reckon.

I'm not talking from experience, but I did have loan of one for a week or so about 6 months back, and they are fun!

thanks for all the consideration guys..

nah there are no strenghtening exercises i can do because the spine is already damaged (the bone)..

also, the docter said that the pain will only get worse as i get older and he said if i keep doing DJ or DH by the time im about 30-35 i will hardly be able 2 walk..so he said stop doing DJ or DH and u will be able 2 walk for the rest of your life with only a little pain..

i know what i can do 2 still stay involved in the sport..do photography..who on this forum does photograph..please add me on msn electro_rider@hotmail.com..

i have fixed up the spelling..

cheers all your guys and girls for supporting me..it means heaps 2 me

I've been known to take the occasional photograph :)

Main reason I don't attempt to ride competitively (apart from them needing to create a whole new class for someone my age, I think) is because my back is stuffed - I won't even attempt Pony Express. Believe me, if the doc has given you information like that, it's for a good reason.

It took me nearly five minutes just to get out of bed this morning. Not funny at all. There's not much they can do with it and the pain only gets worse. Maybe spinal fusion will help, but from the sound of it, the doc would have told you if that was a possibility.

Go get a decent camera (digital) if you haven't already got one, and get out there and join in the fun in a different way!

Yeh that DOES really suck to be off riding for "who-knows-how-long". But yes, doing photography is a really good idea. :)

you dont really need much special.
to start with, just a DSLR body (you can get a D70 with one lens for about 1500 if you shop around,) a decent flash, and a remote flash if you have any money left over.

good luck with your injuries, good to hear that you are keen to stay involved, like Bdinnerv and gordong.

Do a TAFE course or similar, or you may be able to find an adult education program nearby that will do photography courses. Who knows where that'll take you, just keep your chin up and channel your enthusiam from being directed at bikes solely, to activities that can in any way be related to bikes. It'll be hard, but worthwhile in the long run.

Another option is to get involved with the running of races. I know most clubs will be stoked to have some help. Besides it's great fun and you still get to hang out with everyone (and sledge the hell out of them on the start line).

That's right, volunteering in any riding/racing-related field would be appreciated by everyone involved.
Talk to your local club... you could do anything from carpark attendant to shuttle/course marshalling, first aid (via StJohns), even canteen work. That way you'll surround yourself with the sport you love and will also be contributing to it.

Hey dude, sorry to hear about that type of news, but i'll let you on in a little secret, FUCK what the doc said (wel not entirely). I was told before my surgery that i wouldnt even be able to sit on a bike for 3 months let alone jump one, and another thing, my pop was told three times over that he would not ever work again (broken back, shrapnel injuries from grinder disc exposion, and a two storey fall which snapped his pelvis in half). He ended up going back to work (bricklaying) after all three accidents and the last accident was when he was 73yrs old. Doctors are proven wrong all the time, if you are a strong willed person you can achieve anything (within reason).

I have several disc protrusions and sub laxtions (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar) and just had spinal fusion three months ago (S1-L5 decompression and fusion). My advice is just talk to as many people that have had back dramas as you can and ask their stories, i will promise you that you'll hear many a time where the docs have been proven wrong.

Have you been told exactly what the problems are? Is it structural (main vertabrae bodies), discs or your nerves and spinal cord? I have all three, keep your chin up and you'll be back on the bike in no time. Be positive, eat good food and stay away from negative doctors. Good luck dude.

oh bugger that must really suck, i its a good thing you want to stay in the sport, after its done this. but theres still a possibility you can get on the dh trail again, just keep positive. a happy story : a jockey from here (benalla) fell off her horse a while back, and broke her back, many a doctor told her she would never be able to walk again. guess what she does now, she is back on the horses! and doin stable labour (involves a fair bit of walking!)

you could still ride and get a rush, speed biking tends to be smooth, which wont be so bad for your back!

good luck with your back,

sam

my dad broke his neck on a horse and doctors said he would never ever walk again. he did the same brake as christipher Reeve. year and bit later he was walking because of his determination. now many years after he is breaking in horses and riding again. he also got on to the australian polo team and competed all over the world after the accident. that means anything can happen. dont beleive what the doctors say. if you think you can do it you can
