Got my hands on an old set of wheels with shimmano rotors that were used with shimmano cable disc brakes. just wonderin if anyone knows whether I can used them in Hayes mag brake calipers. I'd like to have a set slicks on the wheels so I can drop em in and out if I wanna ride on the street and not wear my knobblies out or have to change tyres so much.

I put em in and they seem to be a little thinner than hayes rotors and a little larger in diameter. They don't foul though so I reckon if the rotor and pad compounds are the same or similar they should work. I guess this is mainly what I was wondering.

maybe I'll just not a pick a critical moment to test em hey........

I run the opposite (Hayes Rotors, Saint Calipers) with no dramas. I've also used Imperial Rotors with both Hayes and Armour brakes, again all good. I'd say it should be OK. If not, Rotors are pretty cheap.

it'll work fine, as long as the rotor isnt touching the calliper or anything - which can sometimes happen with a slightly larger diameter rotor. (a few mm)

As long as that isn't an issue, it'll work fine.

From memory, XT rotors have a much shorter braking surface than the Hayes rotors, so you'll get uneven pad wear as a few mm of pad won't make contact with the braking surface.
The Shimano Deore rotors are fine, as they have a taller braking surface... but they're only available in 6".
Hrm, since you said they were the ones that come with the cable disc brakes, then they should be fine... I prefer to run a 6" on the rear, and like the rotor in question as it has a bit more metal to it, and resists bending more than a Hayes/XT rotor would (and yes, I've done "tests" to back that up).

hey! yeh i think u should u have no problems, i have known of the new XT rotors to have problems with anything but XT new style calipers. the new XT spline rotors have not been shaved on the arm parts of the rotor and since hayes are a bigger pad they absolutly tear the pads away.
but u should be fine.

FYI guys

the shimano 6" mech rotors are very similar if not identical to the deore M525 mech rotors, so they have a "wider" braking area than the XT's etc. But still worth checking - just look at the bottom of the pad to see if its contacting the rotor.
