here we go again....

1. descover the search function!! this has been covered sooooo many times (without ever really reaching a conclusion!)

2. DH is race orientated on a track..... down a hill....
FR is not race orientated (generally just hitting big gaps jumps and general tooling around - not neccessarily on a specific track either)
3. number 2 is just a basic guide - many people have different opinions of what the two riding styles consist of....)

i did have a search but i came up a bit empty handed. it was prolly me but thanks. i have another question

what sort of bikes are freeride rientated as compared to DH orientated?

thanks

From just checking out ads and stuff in bike mags, it seems to me that the freeride types of bike (the ads label them that way) have a higher bottom brackt and steeper head angle. I'm assuming that this benefits the FR bikes with more clearance on bigger drops and the DH bikes better handling around corners.

That's an ussumption that some one is bound to correct me on though.

Johnny's right and you'll find as well as that that FR bikes will sacrifice an inch or two travel front and back for some weight loss. Mainly giving the rider a better chance to throw the bike around a little more and also to be able to ride back up a hill also.
You'll also find that freeride bikes may have 2 or three chainrings up front while the DH rigs usually jut run the one 40-44T ring. Again to better the opportunity of pedalling back up!

What about black diamond, double black diamond, and X-treme freeride, where do they stand

Freeride means that you are free to ride however you wish. The term has been corrupted by marketers to define people who have long travel bikes with at least two chainrings and use them to see so high/far they can jump/huck and noe break their bike or most of their bones.

I consider myself a freerider in the original, literal sense of the term as I ride trails, do epic rides, ride skate parks and dirt jumps, do downhill runs and go looking for silly things to rdie off, sometimes all in the one ride.

Choose the definition of freerider that suits.

Choose the definition of freerider that suits.

Person or country that benifits from others efforts without taking any risks themselves. Example: Revolution comes, most go out on the streets risking being rounded up by the security apparatus. Yet those that own bikes with higher bottom brackets and shorter head angles stay home where it's safe. If the revolution fails, the freeriders loose nothing. If the revolution succeeds, the freeriders gain the freedom to huck off high objects without taking any risks themselves.

That's my idea of a freerider.

or some one who doesn't pay for his/her bus ticket.

Hmmmm... deep.

Although I would have to say that freeridingh would be the opposite. Freeriding, meaning that the rider feels that they are 'free' to ride when and where they want.... rebelling against the norm and rules and regulations.
A very good example is the Tour de France road gap in NWD3... Taking riding to the next level and disregarding who or what gets in the way.

They're just marketing terms though - what do they really mean? Just able to take bigger hits I suppose. A lot of "freeriding" bikes is simply marketing spiel, I think.

To me, a freeride bike is less race oriented, and generally more upright (like Johnny says).

Like Rennie said some time - freeriding is "just going for a ride".

Who says marketing doesn't work.

I say the Tour De France road gap is a poor example.

1. It was just a road gap, by professional standards nothing too special, certainly not taking riding to the "next level".

2. He crashed

3. Gave another reason for roadies to dislike mtb & to use their lobbying power against mtber's.

I didn't mean that the tour road gap was taking riding to the next level, I meant that 'Freeriding' was a about trying to take it to a new level. Albeit, I don't think many guys out there on Farkin would have the balls to hit the gap... I know I wouldn't!!

Besides, how is the tour gap a bad example for what i was explaining. I was talking of the riders going against the norm and disregarding others in riding the lines they want.

He Crashed.... sure but he got the point across. Still got shitloads of attention, etc etc.

And the roadies disliking mtb's.... I think that was the aim of the stunt, piss a few people off!!

"Freeriding" is a Catch-22. The moment you say you are one you cease to be one.

Im still confused ???????? ??????

What is the differance between freeriding, extreme freeriding, black diamond riding, double black diamond riding, hucking, down hill riding, extreme down hill riding and down hill racing, jump riding, skateparkriding, urban riding, trials riding????

Im so confused, what catagory do i belong to? On the weekends i mostly ride DH, but i occasionally race, and some of the tracks i ride have drops in them, and the track at thredbo has a black diamond sign on one of the corners and i ride that? Sometimes i even go for city rides as well. Oww... and i ride to work as well, so am i part roadie too????

Im so confused. Am i a extreme downhill hucker black diamond urban road racer rider? . Has anybody heard of this catagory, what bike should i be riding, what clothes should i be wearing and what language should i be using, is it a huck or a drop??? Sometimes i even take my DH bike street riding and jump off stuff, and even try pulling some trials moves, should i not be doing that like Grant Allen says????? I am not sure who i should be hanging with either, is there anybody else that is in this catagory that needs a riding buddy, i feel so lonely :(

HELP!!!!!

I'd say you're probably an extreme-freejibbing-huckracer, to the max! But only if you ride everything in a race jersey, fullface, girls jeans, skate shoes and wear the ubiquitous JIBBERS CHAIN WALLET OF POWAH!!

Does this mean i should be drinking Pepsi, because i prefer coke?????

If i have to wear girls jeans how low should i have them slung, and do i need to have a wail tail showing???? Should they be full length, quater length or flares?

Please help me Ryan, you seem to know what your talking about.

Ryan

Dude, no whales tails please, but you have to make sure that they are as tight as is humanly possible, so tight in fact that casual observers can clearly make out your dick and balls tucked as they must be, down the inside of one of the legs. This look is known as the "sidepipe" and is essential in gaining both amazing bike handling skills and much needed skatepark / jibber credibility.

Of course you've got to drink pepsi max dude, what's the point in trying to be extreme if you don't even drink pepsi max, it's officially sanctioned by Pepsi as increasing your personal gnar-factor 10-fold  I guess mountain dew would be a suitable substitute in an emergency though, kids these days....

Cave dweller, do yourself a big favour and ride for number one. Yourself. Do not try to fit into someone else's categories. You will end up unhappy. Why do you ride? Think about it...... Do you enjoy the ride, the feeling when you have finished? Or, do you ride so others can watch you? ... I didn't think so.

It has been my observation that what is one year a DH bike is a couple years later a 'freeride' as the new DHers are getting bigger and better.

Cheers

Don't worry CD's post was tongue in cheek. But that said, I think the poor man is confused, as he rides a race bike with hucker suspension/components :p (says he who rides a trail hardtail with DH components)

i consider my slef as a free rider i do pretty much every thing dh dirt jump street i guess peopel are starting to look at freeriding in different catigories now though i guess theres is different aspects of it: street (PARK), dirtjump, N "HUCKING" what ever you want to call it no competitive down hill north shore these are defenatly all freeriding and as the name suggest it can be what ever you want it to be

Daneel

freeriding to me is like DH without the racing. and with north shore.

so, basically, like the lizard rock track, except about 20 times longer if you really want to enjoy it..

aaronzor, i agree. a freerider: one who lives in maquarie fields. jks jks.. anyway, i think it is obvious to me now that the term freerider has been supersceeded. (sp?) by the word extreme-doubleblackdiamond-hardcore-free-hucker-jibber.
