With your budget, you could only really try your luck on the 2nd hand market. If you could find a new set of shoes AND pedals for a hundred bucks, they'd have to be so cheap and crappy that they'd most likely be more of a hindrance than a help.

Probably save your bikkies if you can and try and go shopping with $300.

I race both XC and on the road. I just use my MTB shoes every day and have SPD pedals on all my bikes so I don't have to keep switching pedals around. Watch out on training rides though because the fashion police will give you grief, especially when wearing baggy shorts.

You should be able to get a NEW shoe/clipless pedal combo for just under $200.

Check out Phantom, or even your LBS, you might be surprised.

Bike & Board in Jindy have $199 shoe/pedal deals so I'm guessing you won't have much trouble finding some.

with a size 12, you may as well occy strap your feet to flats. now thats budget.

Ahahahahaha :D [sorry, picture brain!]

You might just have a bit of trouble unclipping at the traffic lights. Or it's a good way to force yourself to learn to trackstand quickly!
