View Full Version : Custom Sunday Team - which fork?

Possibly looking at getting a Sunday Team and switching out some parts, but forks are my major dilemma.
Fork:
- 8inch Fox40 DH
- 7inch Dorado DH
- 8inch Dorado Xworks converted to TPC+ Damping
Which fork do you guys think will fit the bill? Just looking for opinions rather than needing serious advice.
Cheers

EDIT: Haha oops, Gillian's farkin account was still signed in.... oh well :)

Thats better... :D
For the colour coordination motivated people out there, if the Sunday plan does work out, it may be powder coated a sweet sweet black.

1. Can't get the xworks dorados anymore and even then i don't think you can convert them to 200mm TPC, only 180mm TPC (which is the same as the normal blue ones, is the extra $$ worth red stickers, i think not......)
2. Can't get DH40's for at least 3 months (or more) in Australia unless you were on the waiting list.
So that only leaves the normal dorados out of your list of forks.
If you get a 7inch fork for the sunday you may have to ditch the E13 bottom cup and buy a normal FSA or cane creek headset to get your head angle in the correct position (seeing it was designed for a 8inch fork and you will be using a 7) but that will depend on how step you like your head angle. Seeing you are at thredbo most of the time it wouldn't be very good i assume.
Might just be worth sticking with the boxxers and see how the DH40's hold up over the next couple of months.

switching out "some parts" - being indicative of my intentions (plural, not singular). :)
As well as the forks, if i go Sunday styles, i'll be switching out wheels and brakes minimum.

Was just thinking that she would need to change her name to SundayGirl ;)
If you can afford it and dont mind waiting get the Fox 40's (screw what people are saying about them being unproven). They are lighter than boxxers but still should be as strong as something like 888's and with that performance to weight ratio it seems pretty ideal for a girl

I have the 8 inch Dorado X-Works on my DH Team.

So they are just normal dorados now with red X-works stickers.
Its funny, i have been saying for ages that SPV was a bad idea in forks and TPC is heaps better, seems that over 1 year later everyone is finally realising the same thing.
Death to SPV. Die crappy dampning system, DIE!!!

Ow wow, so much to look forward to if they are the strength of 888's :D Cracked lowers, worn stanchion tubes, oil leaking through the casing....... most of these problems have been soughted now they are second generation forks, as for the foxes, by all means drop $3K on them and let me know how they are going in a years time ;)

3 months???
Who said that?
Our first shipment landed (and shipped) yesterday. Amazing as it sounds, we had one backorder since late June.
The latest update I have from Fox (Tuesday) is that 40s are into full production now and our orders should be shipping over the next 3-4 weeks. (no word on 36s though)

Well, you have not really said any dates at all but you gave the impression in the last fox 40 post that you have had back orders since august last year and you last shipement didn't even come close to filling those back orders.
So, your next shipment is due in the next month. Care to tell the rest of us how many are arriving and how many backorders you need to fill first? So if SpectRe placed an order today how long would he have to wait? 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months?
Sigh.... wish i had the spare 3g's to drop on a pair. Maybe next year :(

Dude that is the biggest pile of bullcrap i've heard, its a real pity because i've read so much smart, well thought out, and helpful posts from you usually. I have even learnt from them. I'm going to rip that post apart picture by picture.
First picture - is that mooreys? gigantic crash, not even an "example" really.
Second picture - A FUCKTARD that overtightened the bolts, that is in NO WAY a fork fault, marzocchi specifically states the torque figures, which are clearly LOWER than other marzocchi forks.
Third picture - first batch of internationally sold forks, US rather. I don't believe we saw any holey lower issues here in aus, they were sorted out before the forks hit au, or very very early anyway.
Fourth picture - the stanchions are anodized black + polished. The colour slowly fading is perfectly normal if they are seeing a lot of use, could also mean some dirt has penetrated the dust seal, but is definately not "the stanchion wearing".
Fifth picture - Refer to my comments on second picture. Another retard who is hamfisted, and shouldn't EVER be wrenching on a bike. Overtightened bolts, results in something breaking, it was never marzocchi's fault.
Rant over. It just hurts to see so many people giving such a good fork a bad name, just from internet he-said she-said bullshit. I've seen so much of it lately, it's pathetic.
Personally, if I had Dorado/Fox40 money to spend on a DH fork, I would buy a 200mm 888RC (cheap if you shop right), a Go-Ride lowrider lower crown with pressfitted steerer, a Go-Ride upper switch crown to lower the bars, and depending on taste, maybe some Ti springs, and maybe the optional low-speed compression adjustment adjuster (if you need more lsc damping).

uDi- just get over it, not everyone wants to join you on your 888 love. I'd rather just about any other fork to an 888.
yeah, even a heavier, flexier, cracktastic dorito.

The pinchbolt thing could actually be completely the fork's fault. It's been discussed at some length on RM, and it had apparently happened to at least one person (I think two, but don't quote me on that one) who used a torque wrench (like anyone here uses them) to get EXACTLY the right torque. Regardless of that, there has to be a safety factor, especially with something like mtb forks, that allows for the fact that nobody carries a friggin torque wrench with them on the trails.
Arches cracking is pretty extreme and if it's crash damage, well you can't call it either way. Could be an extremely heavy crash, or it could be a fault of the fork exacerbated (sp?) by unusually heavy loading, or both, whatever. Either way it means nothing.

Not so much regular Dorados, just better SPV.
Much more supple.
With 8"
Well, I just use a hex driver, and follow the 1-2-1-2-1 method, and tighten them tight, but not too tight. No torque wrench no nothing, and my dropouts are fine.
The screws as far as I know are a hard steel, and the fork has beefy steel or cromoly inserts where the screw threads into, so really even if it's overtightened a little, the force only has one place to go.
When I snap mine being as careful as I am, then I will come back and you can all say "I told you so" but till then I stand by what I said.

Don't know about you, but my Dorados weigh 7.6 pounds with stem and 230mm of steerer. 888s are 8 pounds with a 200mm steerer and no stem, so with a longer steerer and a stem it (to make it the equivalent specs as a Dorado) it's going to be at least 8.5 pounds.
Yes a Dorado flexes more, but i'd prefer to have my forks lex around a rock rather than throw be over one. And finally, from what i gather 888s crack just as much as Dorados.
How about something a little left of centre: Avalanche or Risse for example. I know of a couple more but I'm not sure if they're still in business. Does anyone else know of any?

Just change the brakes to avids and change the wheels to mavics or some thing leave the boxxers on there. Ive got a sunday team and thats what i did and its a sweet ride. The boxxers suit that bike sweet.

I heard from a fairly reliable source that actually owns both froks that the Fox 40 is slightly heavier.
