Hey guys,
I am thinking of replacing my handlebars soon, going to carbon fibre. But about a month ago I bought some specialized grips, I used hairspray to get them on (like you normally do), just was wondering if anyone had any good tips on how to get them off? Because i tried removing them a bit, but they seriously wouldn't budge. And I don't want to destroy them as they are fairly new.

Thanks,

- Michael -

i usually wack a screw driver under them and wack a bit more hairspray in there. work it around then they will come off without too much trouble.

you may want to look at lockons for the carbon bars, unless theres some magical way of removing grips without using something to pry them a little, as you dont want to be scratching the carbon.

Insert a screw driver or something similar made of plastic to protect the carbon and spary more hair spar or squirt some water in. Give it a wiggle and a squeeze and the liquid should spread quick.

Alternativly use an air compressor.

i have a special way of putting grips on and off...and you dont need hair spray...Its kind of hard to explain but i will do my best, Firstly you push them on only by using your palm flat against the back, and they should slide on if your bars are clean. To get them off use four fingers and put them evenly arount the side of the grip closest to the stem and push, making sure that you are pushing straight.

OR the last way is to put a WD40 can with the straw attached to the head and wedge it between the gripand it should come off easily..to clean it DONT USE TERPS OR METHO, just put them in some very hot water! But make sure not to hot or they will turn into a rubber band...

Hows that way special?

If I read it correctly you whack them on and rip them off :D

Seriously though, air is the way to go for removal and install, along with a little hair spray. When installing I spray with hair spray then slide on, I then squirt air inside to dry the hair spray quickly. Grip is set quickly and ready to ride.

the success of using brute force alone is pretty much determined by the grip. grips with a harder core (kona jackshit grips) are easy enough to slide on/off without hair spray because they are nice and stiff and not rubbery on the inside.

i would love to see you slide a pair of ouries on and off without some sort of lube. that said, its not too hard to roll ouries on and off.

I would never use lockons on carbon bars.

I have no basis of fact for this opinion that I'm espousing, but the thought of clamping carbon bars in another 4 places aside from where the stem is makes little cracking sounds in my imagination.

Personally, I use Ritchey WCS foam grips with my carbon bars - great comfort, easy to install/remove, no bar damage and I've never had one slip in any kind of condition.

BTW - if you've got access to an air compressor, you'll never need to worry about hairspray or screwdrivers ever again.

I use lockons on my carbon bars and they're fine, the bars are reinforced to be clamped at the middle of the bars and where the brakes etc are attached so clamping grips on shouldn't cause problems. Provided you don't over tighten them and crush the laminate of course.

long story short... don't listen to B0din... he's just paranoid. ;)

I find that prying the grips open with a screwdriver and spraying the gap created with some Windex does the trick. :D

air compressor. if there stuck on tight enough u can shoot one grip off. if there cheapo grips with teh rubber bar end n a small hole (on both sides ) stick the compressor hose in one side, and aim for ur mate with the other.

bar that a screwdriver n water.

or in case of exremely fucked up stripped out lock ons. hammer/.

Cut them in half and buy new ones?

Or screwdriver on top of something to protect your bars and some WD40

I think the best way is to go the the petrol station and place the air pump (used to pump car tyres) in between ur grip and handle and turn the pump on. The grip should slide of easy as no problems. I dont think hairspray is that good as it leaves a sticky residue on the bars.

I'm not paranoid. How long have you been reading my posts? Why shouldn't they listen to me? What's wrong? TELL ME!!!

Use WD-40: Thats what I use with no problems, they dry pretty quickly. Just stick a long screw driver in between the grips and the bars, and spray it good. If you have that red pipe thing, use it, it helps cuz u can yank the pipe in nice and deep.

to get grip off my bike i usually say "Hey, Grip, Give me my fuckin bike back" or i jump on his bike and pretend to ride away or in extreme circumstances i shoot him. does the trick every time.

lol, jks jks (if you couldn't tell then you're pretty stupid anyway) i usually just spray a little WD-40 in between the brips and bars.. works like a charm, then hairspray them back on.

Yup. Blowing grips around workshops is fun. If they dont have the hole in the end, try and get the nosel of the air compressor under the lip of the grip, blow air thru and it should make the grip slip off.

In the days before I used lockons (why wouldnt you?) to get grips off I would loosen my brake lever clamp and use that to butt up against the grip, then twist it side to side as you pull and pop! off they came.

worked every time.
